Tool selection problem in flexible manufacturing systems

  • This paper deals with a problem on the selection of alternative tools in a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) where a lot of tools are required to produce a large variety of product items. An approach using branch and bound method is proposed to minimize a total number of tools required through the optimal use of the alternative tools. In this approach, tools are initially divided into tool subgroups based on graph theory for the purpose of the effective search of the optimal solution. A small example is also presented to highlight the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • We address the problem of determining the optimal processing times and pallet/fixture allocation in Flexible Manufacturing systems in order to minimize tool cost while meeting throughput targets of multiple part types. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear program superimposed on a closed queueing network of the FMSs under consideration. A numerical example reveals the potential of our approach for significant cost saving. We argue that our model can be Integrated Into the process planning system of an FMS to generate efficient process plans quickly.

  • Inorganic III-V light emitting diodes (LEDs) have superior characteristics, such as long-term stability, high efficiency, and strong brightness compared to conventional incandescent lamps and OLED. However, due to the brittle property of bulk inorganic semiconductor materials, III-V LED limits its applications in the field of high performance flexible electronics. This seminar introduces the first flexible and implantable GaN LED on plastic substrates that is transferred from bulk GaN on Si substrates. The superb properties of the flexible GaN thin film in terms of its wide band gap and high efficiency enable the dramatic extension of not only consumer electronic applications but also the biosensing scale. The flexible white LEDs are demonstrated for the feasibility of using a white light source for future flexible BLU devices. Finally a water-resist and a biocompatible PTFE-coated flexible LED biosensor can detect PSA at a detection limit of 1 ng/mL. These results show that the nitride-based flexible LED can be used as a type of implantable LED biosensor and as a therapy tool.

  • In this paper, we discuss the vibration suppression control of spatial redundant flexible manipulators through pseudo-inversed of Jacobian. In order to verify our method, the experiments are performed for PTP(Point To Point) motion of spa-tial flexible manipulators(1) with no redundancy(2) with one redundant DOF(degree of freedom). Finally, a comparison between these results is presented to show the performance of out approach.

  • A linear compressor used in a refrigerator has higher energy efficiency than a reciprocating compressor. But its vibration level is still severe than others. The vibration level of linear compressor at the frequency of 60Hz is dominant since it is the exciting frequency of a motor. Experimental approach to reduce the vibration needs much effort and long period. In this paper, simulation tool to predict the vibration of the shell of the linear compressor was developed. The piston, body and shell are assumed to be rigid, while the loop pipe is flexible. The results by the developed tool showed good agreements with those by experiments.

  • The problems concerning FMC (Flexible manufacturing cell) system layout were treated in this paper. In fact, there being no clear definition about FMS (Flexible manufacturing system), it could be treated as the system adopting flexible-automation and FMS has been improving as a form of parts machining system. It was thought that the problems of combination of machine tool groups and parts family were important. Parts familly and machine tool groups were made up by means of multivariate analysis and the minimum trnsfer concept using correlation coefficient ($\rho$). And FMC system was layout by directional graph according to the FMS classifications.

  • A pilot system for flexible automatic assembly has been built at ASRI in Seoul National University. The system is designed for being capable of assembling different variants and products. The system consists of three industrial robots, four free-flow conveyors, automatic tool changers, RCC and fixtures. This paper describes the concept and the technical solutions of the developed flexible assembly cell. Results of performance evaluation using colored petri net are also presented and discuss.

  • In the field of assembly processes, non-rigid parts such as wires, tubes, gaskets and 0-rings cannot be assembled automatically. And although many researches have been made for rigid part mating, there are not substantial studies in flexible parts assembly field. In this paper, assembly stages of flexible parts are classified and some analysis are made. FEM was used to estimate the relationship between deformation and reactive forces. An assembly algorithm adopting reciprocal twisting motion was proposed and the assembly tool design methodology was discussed.
