Flexible composite propellers are subject to large deformation under heavy loading, and hence the hydrodynamic performance of deformed propeller might deviate from that of the metallic propeller under negligible deformation. To design the flexible propeller, it is therefore necessary to be able to evaluate the structural response of the blades to the hydrodynamic loadings, and then the influence of the blade deformation upon the hydrodynamic loadings. We use the lifting-surface-theory-based propeller analysis and design codes in solving the hydrodynamic problem, and the finite-element-method program formulated with 20-node iso-parametric solid elements for the analysis of the structural response. The two different hydrodynamic and structural programs are arranged to communicate through the carefully-designed interface scheme which leads to the derivation of the geometric parameters such as the pitch, the rake and the skew distributions common to both programs. The design of flexible propellers, suitable for manufacturing, is shown to perform the required thrust performance when deformed in operation. Sample design shows the fast iteration scheme and the robustness of the design procedure of the flexible propellers.

Recently, flexible cages have been introduced in an attempt to absorb and reduce the abnormal load transfer along the anterior parts of the spine. They are designed to be used with the pedicle screw systems to allow some mobility at the index level while containing ROM at the adjacent level. In this study, a finite element (FE) study was performed to assess biomechanical efficacies of the flexible cage when combined with pedicle screws with flexible rods. The post-operated models were constructed by modifying the L4-5 of a previously-validated 3-D FE model of the intact lumbar spine (L2-S1): (1) Type 1, flexible cage only; (2) Type 2, pedicle screws with flexible rods; (3) Type 3, interbody fusion cage plus pedicle screws with rigid rods; (4) Type 4, interbody fusion cage plus Type 2; (5) Type 5, Type 1 plus Type 2. Flexion/extension of 10 Nm with a compressive follower load of 400N was applied. As compared to the Type 3 (62~65%) and Type 4 (59~62%), Type 5 (53~55%) was able to limit the motion at the operated level effectively, despite moderate reduction at the adjacent level. It was also able to shift the load back to the anterior portions of the spine thus relieving excessively high posterior load transfer and to reduce stress on the endplate by absorbing the load with its flexible shape design features. The likelihood of component failure of flexble cage remained less than 30% regardless of loading conditions when combined with pedicle screws with flexible rods. Our study demonstrated that flexible cages when combined with posterior dynamic system may help reduce subsidence of cage and degeneration process at the adjacent levels while effectively providing stability at the operated level.

This study performs the elastic and viscoelastic analysis of composite continuous beams with flexible shear connectors. Due to creep and shrinkage of the concrete part, the stress redistribution between the concrete slab and steel beam, and the evolution of the redundant restraint reaction occur with time. Using the equation of equilibrium, internal and external compatibility condition, and constitutive relationships, mathematical formulations are formulated. The solution is obtained by means of numerical step-by-step techniques and the finite difference method. Numerical parametric studies are performed to evaluate the stress redistribution, and the evolution of the redundant restraint reaction. The parameters include the stiffness and spacing of shear connectors, the age of concrete at loading, and the relative humidity.

This paper presents resizing design optimization method by utilizing genetic algorithm(GA), which consists of three basic operators : reproduction, crossover and mutation. The fitness and penalty function for resizing optimization problem are defined, and the flowchart of the developed computer program along with the descriptions of each modules is presented. Also, modelling for flexible-body dynamic analysis is presented. The model is composed of bodies, joints, and force elements such as translational spring-damper-actuator. The design objects si to determine the wall thickness for minimum weight under dynamic displacement constraint.
The elastic seismic response of plan-asymmetric multi storey steel-frame buildings is investigated under earthquake loading with particular emphasis on forward-rupture directivity and fling records. Three asymmetric building systems are generated with different torsional stiffness and varying static eccentricity. The structural characteristic of these systems are designed according to UBC 97 code and their seismic responses subjected to a set of earthquake records are obtained from the response history analysis (RHA) as well as the linear static analysis (LSA). It is shown that, the elastic torsional response is influenced by the intensity of near-fault ground motions with different energy contents. In the extreme case of very strong earthquakes, the behaviour of torsionally stiff buildings and torsionally flexible buildings may differ substantially due to the fact that the displacement envelope of the deck depends on ground motion characteristics.

We consider the simultaneous selection of part routes for multiple part types in Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMSs). Using an optimization framework we investigate two alternative route assignment policies. The one, called routing mix policy in the literature, specifies the optimal proportion of each part type to be produced along its alternative routes, assuming that the proportions can be kept during execution. The other one, which we propose and call pallet allocation policy, partitions the pallets assigned to each part type among the routes. The optimization framework used is a nonlinear programming superimposed on a closed queueing network model of an FMS which produces multiple part types with distinct repeated visits to certain workstations. The objective is to maximize the weighted throughput. Our study shows that the simultaneous use of multiple routes leads to reduced bottleneck utilization, improved workload balance, and a significant increase in the FMS's weighted throughput, without any additional capital investments. Based on numerical work, we also conjecture that pallet allocation policy is more robust than routing mix policy, operationally easier to implement, and may yield higher revenues.

Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS) is an integrated, computer controlled complex of automated material handling devices and numerically controlled machine tools that can simultaneously process medium-sized volumes of a variety of part types. This paper discusses planning problems that can be solved for efficient use of an FMS and present an integrated decision support system for FMS production planning and scheduling problems. FMSDS(Flexible Manufacturing Systems Decision Support System) consists of data handling modules, part selection module, loading module, load adjusting module, scheduling module and simulation module etc. This paper presents the solution methodology of each subproblems and integrated interfaces between subproblems using hierarchical approaches and loop controls considering the relationships between subproblems. A case study by this model is presented.

A FE model is to develop a personalized biomechanical model of the scoliotic spine that will allow the design of clinical test providing optimal estimation of the post-operation results. A flexible multi-body model of the spine including rib cage, clavicle, and scapular was developed to simulate several mobility simulations. Vertebrae, clavicle and scapular were represented using rigid bodies and ribs and sternum were modeled as flexible bodies. Kinematical Joints and spring elements were used to represent the intervertebral disc and ligaments respectively. Postero-anterior and lateral radiographics of a scoliotic spine were used to represent a 3D reconstruction. CT data for same patient were also used to verify vertebrae rotation driven from postero-anterior and lateral radiographic images. Simulated results showed good reducibility almost uniformly distributed along the spinal segments. It was also found that boundary and loading conditions, required to mimic the operation procedures, were proven to be very sensitive parameters to its results rather than its mechanical properties
The vertical pressure due to soil prism load and surface surcharge load acts on buried pipe, and occasionally uplifting force due to earthquake or differential settlement acts on it. In this paper, study was performed to estimate the pressure acting on the buried pipe due to soil prism load through analyzing Marston-Spangler theory by new method. And loading tests on the buried flexible pipe were performed to study on the response of the pipe due to surface surcharge load. Also, through the estimation of uplifting resistance theory and uplifting test for buried pipe, the method to determine the maximum uplifting resistance of buried pipe was proposed.
Rockfall protection fence is one of the most common rockfall protection methods in Korea. If rockfall protection fences are required along the road or railway, their location, height and capacity, in terms of the maximum kinetic energy that they can absorb, should be specified. Within this paper, the best practice of rockfall barrier is introduced. Modern rockfall simulations as a means to define risks, protection requirements, dynamic loading and height of potential structures and selection of appropriate placement is presented. Technical possibilities of rockfall barriers and their actual limits are presented. Safety concepts based on probabilities approaches are proposed. Recent studies performed in other countries show that Flexible Barriers are also a feasible system to stop and retain debris flows. Finally an outlook onto further development is given.
