  • We fabricated flexible electronic paper display(EPD) by using toner particles on plastic (PC) substrate. We observed the relationship between contrast ratio and changes of rib structures. One is a fabrication of ribs on bottom substrate. The display with ribs on bottom substrate had higher contrast ratio about 46% than display with ribs on top substrate. The other is a change of density of rib. The less density of ribs fabricated, the higher the contrast ratio become.

  • The structural methods used to protect coastal erosion are usually very expensive in construction as well as in spending on maintaining the structures from damage. Those structures like embankments, breakwaters, jetties etc. are commonly constructed with concretes (rigid methods) to protect coastal erosion. But those rigid methods are not effective always, because the wave energy and impact force on the structures could not be effectively reduced by those methods. For avoiding sediment erosion on coastal areas by the way of reducing wave energy, a flexible breakwater is introduced which will reduce energy and protect coastline economically and environmentally. The flexible device is a combination of flexible wire nets and stack of rings made of used vehicle tires and soft blades on surfaces. This flexible wire net is placed in between two stacks of rings. The stack of rings is mainly used to hold the flexible wire nets and the flexible wire net is mainly used to reduce wave energy and helps to deposit sediments in coastal area. For a field experiment study, the above-mentioned flexible breakwater of coastal protection has been set up at the Shuang-Chun coastal area in Tainan County since June 10, 2009. The length of the flexible device is 50.0 meters and the height is 2.0 meters. The function of the device has been examined by Typhoon Linfa during June 19~22, 2009 and by Typhoon Morakot during August 6~10, 2009. The result shows that the flexible breakwater has effectively trapped sediments and let them deposit on coastal. The depth of sediment deposition around the device was about 0.5 to 0.8 meters.

  • Recently, active materials such as amorphous silicon (a-Si), poly crystalline silicon (poly-Si), transition metal oxide semiconductors (TMO), and organic semiconductors have been demonstrated for flexible electronics. In order to apply flexible devices on the polymer substrates, all layers should require the characteristic of flexibility as well as the low temperature process. Especially, pentacene thin film transistors (TFTs) have been investigated for probable use in low-cost, large-area, flexible electronic applications such as radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, smart cards, display backplane driver circuits, and sensors. Since pentacene TFTs were studied, their electrical characteristics with varying single variable such as strain, humidity, and temperature have been reported by various groups, which must preferentially be performed in the flexible electronics. For example, the channel mobility of pentacene organic TFTs mainly led to change in device performance under mechanical deformation. While some electrical characteristics like carrier mobility and concentration of organic TFTs were significantly changed at the different temperature. However, there is no study concerning multivariable. Devices actually worked in many different kinds of the environment such as thermal, light, mechanical bending, humidity and various gases. For commercialization, not fewer than two variables of mechanism analysis have to be investigated. Analyzing the phenomenon of shifted characteristics under the change of multivariable may be able to be the importance with developing improved dielectric and encapsulation layer materials. In this study, we have fabricated flexible pentacene TFTs on polymer substrates and observed electrical characteristics of pentacene TFTs exposed to tensile and compressive strains at the different values of temperature like room temperature (RT), 40, 50, $60^{\circ}C$. Effects of bending and heating on the device performance of pentacene TFT will be discussed in detail.

  • Several laboratories worldwide have demonstrated the feasibility of producing amorphous silicon thin film transistor (TFT) arrays at temperatures that are sufficiently low to be compatible with flexible foils such as stainless steel or high temperature polyester. These arrays can be used to fabricate flexible high information content display prototypes using a variety of different display technologies. However, several questions must be addressed before this technology can be used for the economic commercial production of displays. These include process optimization and scale-up to address intrinsic electrical instabilities exhibited by these kinds of transistor device, and the development of appropriate techniques for the handling of flexible substrate materials with large coefficients of thermal expansion. The Flexible Display Center at Arizona State University was established in 2004 as a collaboration among industry, a number of Universities, and US Government research laboratories to focus on these issues. The goal of the FDC is to investigate the manufacturing of flexible TFT technology in order to accelerate the commercialization of flexible displays. This presentation will give a brief outline of the FDC's organization and capabilities, and review the status of efforts to fabricate amorphous silicon TFT arrays on flexible foils using a low temperature process. Together with industrial partners, these arrays are being integrated with cholesteric liquid crystal panels, electrophoretic inks, or organic electroluminescent devices to make flexible display prototypes. In addition to an overview of device stability issues, the presentation will include a discussion of challenges peculiar to the use of flexible substrates. A technique has been developed for temporarily bonding flexible substrates to rigid carrier plates so that they may be processed using conventional flat panel display manufacturing equipment. In addition, custom photolithographic equipment has been developed which permits the dynamic compensation of substrate distortions which accumulate at various process steps.

  • We report on the fabrication of ZnO-based thin-film transistor (TFT) inverters with top and bottom gate structures with $Al_2O_3$ dielectrics grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Since the top gate ZnO-based TFT showed somewhat lower field effect mobility than that of the bottom gate device, our ZnO-based TFT inverters were designed with identical dimensions for both channels. This TFT inverter device demonstrated an high voltage gain at a low supply voltage of 5 V and clear dynamic behavior.

  • Recently, semiconductor chips and electronic components are increasingly being used in IT devices such as wearable watches, autonomous vehicles, and smart phones. As a result, there is a growing concern about device malfunctions that may occur due to electromagnetic interference being entangled with each other. In particular, electromagnetic wave emissions from wearable or flexible smart devices have detrimental effects on human health. Therefore, flexible and transparent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials and films with high optical transmittance and outstanding shielding effectiveness have been gaining more attention. The EMI shielding films for flexible and transparent electronic devices must exhibit high shielding effectiveness, high optical transmittance, high flexibility, ultrathin and excellent durability. Meanwhile, in order to prepare this EMI shielding films, many materials have been developed, and results regarding excellent EMI shielding performance of a new materials such as carbon nano tube (CNT), graphene, Ag nano wire and MXene have recently been reported. Thus, in this paper, we review the latest research results to EMI shielding films for flexible and transparent device using the new materials.

  • Recently flexible electronic devices have attracted a great deal of attention because of new application possibilities including flexible display, flexible memory, flexible solar cell and flexible sensor. In particular, development of flexible memory is essential to complete the flexible integrated systems such as flexible smart phone and wearable computer. Research of flexible memory has primarily focused on organic-based materials. However, organic flexible memory has still several disadvantages, including lower electrical performance and long-term reliability. Therefore, emerging research in flexible electronics seeks to develop flexible and stretchable technologies that offer the high performance of conventional wafer-based devices as well as superior flexibility. Development of flexible memory with inorganic silicon materials is based on the design principle that any material, in sufficiently thin form, is flexible and bendable since the bending strain is directly proportional to thickness. This article reviews progress in recent technologies for flexible memory and flexible electronics with inorganic silicon materials, including transfer printing technology, wavy or serpentine interconnection structure for reducing strain, and wafer thinning technology.
