Silicon Carbide Barrier Technology to Enable Flexible OLED Displays

  • This paper provides an overview on the characteristics of a-SiC:H barrier film deposited for flexible display applications. Key characteristics such as high crack resistance, high thermal/hydro stability, excellent adhesion to the polymer substrate, as well as very low permeance has been demonstrated. The excellence of this barrier film has been shown from competitive analysis compared with other barrier coating materials. Finally, flexible Polymer Light Emitting Diode (PLED) test pixels have been fabricated on the barrier coated plastic substrate, demonstrating the viability of the device with lifetime data.

SB2등급 연성베리어의 충돌지점(CIP)에 대한 연구 (Study on Critical Impact Point for a SB2 Class Flexible Barrier)

  • PURPOSES : The impact performance of flexible barrier system such as structural response, vehicular motion and occupant safety vary depending on the impact point. Thus, to properly evaluate the performance of a flexible barrier system, impact should be made to a point which will lead to the worst possible results. This point is called the Critical Impact Point (CIP). This paper presents the way to determine the CIP for a SB2 class flexible barrier system which is consisted of Thrie-Beam rail and circular hollow tube post of 2m span. METHODS: Barrier VII simulations were made for impact points; Case 1 at a post, Case 2 at 1/3 span downstream from a post, Case 3 at middle of the span, Case 4 at 2/3 span downstream from a post. For the structural performance (deflections), impact simulation of 8000kg-65km/h-15degree was used, and for vehicle motion and occupant safety, simulation of 1300kg-80km/h-20degree impact was made and analysed. RESULTS: Case 1 gave the largest dynamic deflection of 75.72cm and also gave the largest snag value of 44.3cm. Occupant safety and exit angle of the vehicle after the impact were not sensitive to the impact point and were all below the allowable limit. CONCLUSIONS : For the SB2 class flexible barrier system's CIP can be regarded as a post which is sufficiently away from the end of Length of Need in order to avoid the end-effect of the barrier system. It can be more economic in the long run because the normal concrete pavement material is likely to cost more due to higher probability of maintenance and repair and higher social cost due to traffic accident, etc.

Towards Super Thin OLED TVs: Barix Thin Film Encapsulation of Glass and Flexible Displays

  • We will discuss encapsulation of OLEDs on both flexible and rigid glass substrates. Accelerated testing at 6CC/90RH and 85C/85RH is compared and acceleration factors for OLED and Calcium test samples are discussed.We have tested the stability and performance of our barrier coating to much higher temperatures: up to 140 C. Water Vapor Transmission rates at temperatures from 60 to 140 C are presented. Rates and methods for low cost manufacturing on a large scale are analysed.

유연 OLED 디스플레이의 기계적 안정성을 위한 제로 스트레스 봉지막 설계 (Design of Zero-Stress Encapsulation for Mechanical Stability of Flexible OLED Displays)

  • In this paper, a study was conducted on encapsulation technology for high mechanical stability of flexible displays. First, unlike conventional encapsulation barrier that exclude cracks as much as possible for low water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), mechanical properties were improved by using a defect suppression mechanism introduced with crack arresters. The zero-stress encapsulation barrier optimizes the residual stress of the thin film based to improve the internal mechanical stability. The zero-stress encapsulation barrier was applied to the organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) to confirm its characteristics and lifetime. Due to improved internal mechanical stability, it has a longer lifetime more than 35% compared to conventional encapsulation technologies. As the zero-stress encapsulation barrier proposed in this study does not require additional deposition process, it is not difficult to apply it. Based on various advantages, it is expected to play an important role in flexible displays.

유연전극을 이용한 대기압 부유전극 유전체 장벽 방전 플라즈마 (Atmospheric Pressure Floating Electrode-Dielectric Barrier Discharges (FE-DBDs) Having Flexible Electrodes)

  • 유연전극 기반의 대기압 부유전극 유전체 장벽 방전 (floating electrode-dielectric barrier discharge, FE-DBD) 시스템을 개발하여 플라즈마 특성을 분석하였다. 유연한 파워전극(powered electrode)을 구성하는 유연유전체로 polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polydiemethylsiloxane (PDMS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET)를 사용하여 플라즈마를 발생하였을 때 플라즈마의 광학적 세기와 전자온도는 파워전극에 인가하는 전압이 증가할수록 증가하였고, 전압이 일정할 때는 PTFE < PDMS < PET 순으로 증가하였다. 이는 유전체의 종류와 전압에 따른 축전용량의 변화로 설명할 수 있었고, 유연전극 기반의 대기압 FE-DBD 플라즈마의 특성은 유연한 파워전극을 구성하는 유전체와 파워전극에 인가되는 전압을 변화함으로써 조절될 수 있음을 의미한다. 유연전극 대기압 FE-DBD 시스템은 피부 곡면을 따라 플라즈마가 발생될 수 있으므로 플라즈마 메디신(plasma medicine)에 유용할 것으로 기대한다.

  • Barrier coating properties of PVA/$SiO_2$ on the flexible substrates (PEN) have been investigated. Thin layer of PVA/$SiO_2$ organic-inorganic hybrid materials were deposited on PEN substrate by the spin-coating. The optical properties and surface roughness of barrier layer on flexible substrate were characterized by AFM, UV-Vis and WVTR/ OTR.

  • A plastic substrate for flexible display is developed. The gas barrier property in the substrate is improved through depositing metal and metal oxide multi layer on plastic film by PVD process. The metal/metal-oxide multiplayer on plastic film shows excellent gas barrier property and optical property.

Effect of Metal Barrier Layer for Flexible Solar Cell Devices on Tainless Steel Substrates

  • A thin metal layer of molybdenum is placed between the conventional barrier layer and the stainless steel substrate for investigating the diffusion property of iron (Fe) atoms. In this study, the protection probability was confirmed by measuring the concentration of out-diffused Fe using a SIMS depth profile. The Fe concentration of chromium (Cr) barrier layer with 10 nm molybdenum (Mo) layer is 5 times lower than that of Cr barrier without the thin Mo layer. The insertion of a thin Mo metal layer between the barrier layer and the stainless steel substrate effectively protects the out-diffusion of Fe atoms.

  • 플렉서블 능동구동형 유기전계발광(Flexible AMOLED) 디스플레이 개발에 있어 핵심기술이라 할 수 있는 high barrier 특성을 갖는 고분자 기판, 능동구동 소자 및 flexible OLED 제작 기술에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. Polyacryl/SiON 복합층을 사용하여 OLED에 적합한 barrier 특성(투습율 : $10^{-5}\;{\sim}\;10^{-6}\;g/m^2-day$)을 가진 고분자 기판을 개발하였으며 이와 더불어 ULTPS TFT, OTFT 및 flexible OLED 소자를 구현하였다.
