  • A new cultivar 'Hongan' was originated from an artificial cross between 'Fuji' and 'Jonathan' carried out at National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science in 1993. The cultivar was preliminarily selected among the elite siblings for its high fruit quality in 2002. After regional adaptability test at five districts for subsequent four years as 'Wonkyo Ga-32', it was finally selected in 2006. 'Hongan' is characterized by the following. Optimum harvest time is late September. Shape of the mature fruit at 309 g on mean weight is globosity with a light red skin on a greenish yellow ground and yellowish white flesh. The fruit contains favorable total soluble solids at $13.7^{\circ}Brix$ and an acidity at 0.28%. Safe storage period for the fruit is 3 weeks at room temperature. It is resistant to Bitter rot. 'Hongan' also reveals a physiological cross compatibility with leading cultivars such as 'Gamhong' and 'Tsugaru' in addition to its maternal parent 'Fuji'. Tree topology is semi-spreading with vigorous growth habit.

  • This study was conducted to compare the postharvest physiological characteristics of 2 paprika cultivars; 'Special', 'Fiesta' grown in 2 regions: Chuncheon(plain region) and Hwacheon(semi-high land region), and by 2 cultural methods; soil and hydroponic(rock wool culture). Respiratory rate of paprika fruit was higher in soil culture, and ethylene production was higher in Chuncheon region of both cultivars. As the thickness of fruit flesh showed thicker in Hwacheon region and hydroponic culture, the firmness of fruit was in proportion to thickness. Vitamin C content was higher in red-cultivar, 'Special'. and in Chuncheon region. Soluble solids was higher in 'Special', but there was no different between cultural regions. The fruit of both cultivars was grown smaller in Chuncheon region, and the fruit shape of 'Fiesta' progressed faster in soil culture. The surface color of fruit was higher in Hwacheon, and although there was no significantly different between cultural method, both cultivars grown by hydroponics was shown vivid color. As above results, for the long term circulation and high quality of fruit, paprika may be cultivated by hydroponics in high-altitude region.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of various polyethylene (PE) film packaging on the quality of strawberry during storage at low temperature. Gas composition in film was changed rapidly at early stage of storage and then kept at the level of 5~10% $CO_2$and 1~3% $O_2$. Weight loss and decay rate were low at 0.08mm PE film packed strawberries. Titratable acidity, pH and soluble solids were changed slightly during storage but its large difference according to film thickness was not observed. Decrease of flesh firm-ness and a value was restrained by PE film packaging. Free sugar of strawberry was composed of glucose and fructose in similar content and it was decreased a little during storage but the difference according to film thickness was not observed. The organic acids in strawberry were citric acid, malic acid, succinic acid, ascorbir acid, oxalic acid, tartaric acid and pyruvic acid and the major organic acid was citric acid. The contents of citric acid, malic acid, succinir acid and ascorbic acid were decreased and oxalic acid and tartaric arid were not changed during storage but pyruvic acid was increased in early stage and then decreased. These changes of organic acid were slight in packaged with 0.08mm PE film strawberry.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate planting depth, which applied the basic data for planting growth ability and mechanical planting of oriental melon. 'Gumssaragi-eunchun' variety was approach grafting to 'Shintozoa' and seedling was growing during 45 days in the 9cm pot and then planted on Jan. 16. The comparison of planting plots was carried out for four experimental plots, which were separated into 0cm, 4.5cm, 9cm, standard cultivation, and 12cm planting depth in soil. In the tunnel of vinyl house, the lowest and the highest temperature was $9.3^{\circ}C\;and\;41.2^{\circ}C$, respectively, and humidity was $59\~99\%$ during Jan. 18 and 19. The faster graft-take rate after planting was the deeper planting depth. The growth of 40 days after planting was not significant in each planting plot, except 0cm experimental plot. Fruit weight was the heaviest in 4.5cm planting depth of experimental plot but sugar content and flesh thickness were not significant in each planting depth. The more depth in planting meant the more increase in fermented fruit rate and decrease in marketable fruit rate. Marketable yield was 2,361kg per l0a in 9cm planting plot, which was $2\%\;and\;1\%$ lower than in 0cm and 4.5cm, respectively, and $11\%$ greater than in 12cm planting plot.

  • We evaluated the fruit quality and the incidence of physiological disorders in Asian pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) cultivar 'Jinhwang' treated with 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP, $1.0{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$) under different temperature conditions to determine appropriate shelf-life period. The postharvest application of 1-MCP in 'Jinhwang' pears showed positive effects at all storage temperature (18, 25 or $30^{\circ}C$) with regard to flesh firmness, marketable fruits (>20N) only attainted with 1-MCP treated fruit after 21 days of shelf-life. A high incidences of physiological disorders and of fruit decay rates were obvious in the fruits distributed at $30^{\circ}C$ and low incidence of physiological disorders including core browning and mealiness were attained at the fruits treated with 1-MCP when we compared with untreated control. The production of ethylene and respiration rates increase coincide with elevated distribution temperature. High respiration rates were obvious in the control fruits, it reached approximately two times higher than the that of 1-MCP treated one regardless of market temperature. These results demonstrated that the application of 1-MCP, especially at high temperature market condition, represented as an effective postharvest technique for newly developed Asian pear 'Jinhwang'.

  • For the evaluation of storage stability of kiwifruit, the conditions of CA storage were based on the following gas compositions; 2% oxygen and 2, 4, 6% carbon dioxide, respectively. The results obtained from the experiment were as follows; The flesh softening was considerably reduced at the storage atmospheres of 4% $CO_2$ plus 2% $O_2$, and fruit firmness of 3.0kg was marked in this CA condition after storage for 180 days. The concentration of $CO_2$ affected clearly on the respiration rate and organic acid compositions of kiwifruit during CA storage. The respiration rate at the storage condition of 6% $CO_2$ was lower than those at 2 and 4% $CO_2$. Quinic and succinic acid contents were obviously increased in the kiwifruit stored at all the CA conditions studied. In comparision of the developed amounts of off-flavor substances, ethanol and acetaldehyde, depended upon the concentration of $CO_2$ in the CA conditions, the larger amount were produced in the storage condition of higher concentration of $CO_3$. From the results mentioned above, it could be concluded that the optimum atmosphere combination for CA storage of kiwifruit was 4% $CO_2$ plus 2% $O_2$.

  • The purple color in flesh of 'Jasim' potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tubers is due to an accumulation of anthocyanin. The experiment was conducted to determine what is the key factor among cultural environments that affect the accumulation of anthocyanin in 'Jasim' potato tubers, and the effect of nitrogen fertilization levels on that. Through analysis of anthocyanin content of purple-fleshed tubers produced under the different cultural environments of three localities and two planting dates, we determined that lower temperature during 30days before harvesting resulted in higher anthocyanin accumulation of 'Jasim' potato tubers. In the experiment of different level of nitrogen fertilization, 'Jasim' potato tubers produced in highland (Daegualryeong) showed higher content of anthocyanin in the treatment of recommended level than in treatment of lower or higher level as compared with the recommended level. However, significant difference of anthocyanin content among different nitrogen fertilization levels was not observed in lowland (Gangnung). These results suggest that the selection of locality or cropping system and the optimal fertilization management are very important factors for production of higher pigmented tubers in purple-fleshed potato.

  • Contents of mineral element and cytokinin in the xylem sap of 'Keumdongee' and 'Tongilhwang' oriental melons were compared with those in oriental melons grafted onto 8 rootstocks. The effect of grafting on the fruit quality of oriental melon was also investigated. Flesh firmness varied with rootstocks. Soluble solids contents in the placenta tissue of grafted 'Tongilhwang' were higher than that in the 'Keumdongee'. Electric conductivity of the xylem sap in own-rooted plants was higher in 'Keumdongee' than in 'Tongilhwang', but it increased in 'Tongilhwang' once they were grafted. The sap volume per plant was greater in 'Keumdongee' than in 'Tongilhwang'. The mineral concentrations varied considerably depending on the rootstock used. Xylem sap of grafted oriental melons contained a higher amount of mineral ions, especially $NO_3{^-}$ and $PO_4{^-}$, than did the sap in own-rooted plants. The increase in the mineral levels in sap due to grafting was most apparent in 'Tongilhwang'. Xylem sap from both 'Keumdongee' and 'Tongilhwang' contained trans-zeatin (t-Z), trans-zeatin riboside (t-ZR), and dihydrozeatin riboside (DHZR). Small amounts of isopentenyl adenine (IPA) and isopentenyl adenine riboside (IPAR) were also detected. Trans-zeatin riboside was the most abundant, followed by t-Z. Cytokinin concentration in 'Keumdongee' was not significantly influenced by rootstock type used, although the highest concentration of cytokinins in 'Keumdongee' was obtained with 'Chamtozwa' rootstock. However, the cytokinin concentration in 'Tongilhwang' increased with grafting irrespective of rootstock type used.
