This study was carried out for the establishment of optic harvest date and storage condition of 'Fuji' apple for CA storage. Apples were picked at 10 day intervals from 17 Sept to 27 Oct.. Apples were analyzed for respiration rata, weight flesh firmness, titratable acidity, soluble solid, total sugar, reducing sugar, surface color and thiault value. In 1990, the optimal harvest season could be judged between 17 Oct. and 27 Oct. from the results of respiration rate rise and change of quality properties. Apples harvested on 27 Oct. wert stored at 2$^{\circ}C$ and 90~95% RH in 1%O2 + 3%CO2, 3%O2 + 3%CO2 and air for 9 months. After 9 months of storage, apples kept in CA storages had beater quality than apples kept in refrigeration storage. Especially, apples kept in 1%O2, + 3%CO2 were fumer and more acid than those kept in 3%O2 + 3%CO2 At the sensory evaluations, apples stored in CA were rated higher quality than apples stared refrigeration.

Physiological characteristics of five new apple cultivars from the Korean apple breeding program were evaluated as a function of harvest time and storage after harvest. Internal ethylene concentration (IEC), flesh firmness, soluble solids concentration (SSC), and titratable acidity (TA) were measured in 'Summer Dream', 'Summer King', 'Green Ball', 'Picnic', and 'Hwangok' apples at harvest, during shelf life at $20^{\circ}C$, and one day after cold storage at $0.5^{\circ}C$ in air. IEC increased during shelf life in 'Summer Dream', 'Summer King', and 'Green Ball' but not in 'Picnic' or 'Hwangok', regardless of harvest time. Flesh firmness decreased towards harvest time and decreased gradually with time in cold storage only in the former three cultivars. In turn, IEC increased during cold storage in the first three cultivars but not for the last two cultivars, irrespective of harvest time. Changes in SSC and TA did not consistently relate to harvest time or storage period but TA tended to decrease as IEC increased. Furthermore, IEC was negatively correlated with flesh firmness except in the 'Green Ball' cultivar but the significance level was much greater in 'Summer Dream' and 'Summer King' (p < 0.0001) than in 'Picnic' (p < 0.01) or 'Hwangok' (p < 0.05) cultivars. Flesh firmness was positively correlated with TA in the first three cultivars but not in the last two cultivars. Overall, the results indicate that cultivars for which IEC increased after harvest had reduced flesh firmness and TA after storage.
This study was conducted to compare extruded pellets (EP) and soft extruded pellets (SEP) with a raw fish-based moist pellet (MP) diet on the growth and flesh quality of Korean rockfish Sebastes schlegeli. Three groups of 20,000 fish (initial mean weight 133 g) per net-cage ($6{\times}12{\times}7m$) were fed commercial EP, SEP or MP for 16 months. The survival of fish fed SEP was higher than those of fish fed EP or MP. The highest growth performances were observed in the mean weight gain, total weight gain, and feed efficiency of fish fed MP, followed by those fed EP and SEP. Among the fish fed on extruded pellets, the total weight gain of fish fed SEP was higher than that of those fed EP, while fish fed EP grew faster than those fed SEP. No notable differences in body composition, sensory scores or textural properties of the dorsal muscle were observed in fish fed on EP, SEP or MP. Thus, it is suggested that extruded pellets, rather than raw fish-based moist pellets, could be fed to Korean rockfish without compromising flesh quality.

This experiment was carried out to examine the residual amount variation of carbendazim and chlorpyrifos in fruit parts of red pepper according to the open field and/or the rain shelter house. It was shown higher residual amounts of agrochemicals in the field than the house condition at two hours (0 day) after chemical application, but it was shown higher residual amounts in the house at 5 days and 10 days. Although the residual amount in the field was higher than in the house at the beginning, the chemicals fast degraded in field condition. Carbendazim and chlorpyrifos remained as time passed in order of receptacle, but the residual amounts of two chemicals in leaf at $5^{th}$ day. Carbendazim and chlorpyrifos were lessened until 10 days after chemical application, and reduction rate were 19.1% and 66.4% in flesh, 45.2% and 62.3% in receptacle, and 41.6% and 72.0% in the stalk, respectively. The reduction rate at 15 days showed 31.1%, 75.3% in flesh, 43.5%, 81.7% in receptacle, and 47.7%, 82.8% in stalk, respectively. Therefore the reduction rate of carbendazim showed receptacle > stalk > flesh, and that of chlorpyrifos showed stalk > receptacle > flesh in order. The calculated half-life of carbendazim showed 29.6 days in flesh, 13.6 days in receptacle, and 16.0 days in stalk, but that of chlorpyrifos showed 8.3 days in flesh, 8.3 days in receptacle, and 6.3 days in stalk. In conclusion, the half-life of carbendazim was longer than that of chlorpyrifos in even part, and especially was longest in flesh part of fruit.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of delayed controlled atmosphere (CA) storage on fruit quality and the incidence of storage disorders during CA storage of 'Fuji' apples (Malus x domestica Borkh.). In the first year of experiment, 'Fuji' apples showed 40% of watercore disorder at the commercial harvest time (Oct. 22). Twenty days delayed CA storage caused to develop the incidence of flesh browning while 30 days delayed CA storage did not. In the second year of experiment, watercore was increased with delaying harvest time. As the estabilishment of delayed CA storage was delayed, the incidence of flesh browning increased at 10 to 30 days delayed CA storage but 40 days delayed CA storage did not have any flesh browning incidence. Respiration rate increased with extending the storage duration. Delayed CA storage reduced respiration rate but was not different compared to the rapid CA. Ethylene production rate was lower in delayed CA storage than in cold storage but higher in delayed CA storage, compared to rapid CA storage. Titratable acidity was lower in delayed CA storage as CA storage progressed. Firmness was not different between rapid CA storage and delayed CA storage after 8 months of CA storage. Therefore, the results indicate that delayed CA storage should be a promising approach to reduce the risk development of flesh browning and watercore during CA storage of 'Fuji' apples.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) application and heat treatment on fruit quality of 'Fuji' apples during CA storage. AVG ($75mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) was applied to 'Fuji' tree at 150 and 175 days after full bloom (DAFB) and the fruit were harvested at 185, 195, and 205 DAFB, respectively. Respiration rate and ethylene production of fruit applied with AVG were greatly reduced more than those in control. Flesh firmness and acidity of fruit applied with AVG were higher than those in control. Flesh browning occurred in all of the control fruit regardless of harvest date. However, AVG-treated fruits were free of flesh browning except for late harvested fruits. At 185 DAFB, 'Fuji' apples were harvested and prestorage heat treatment was done for 3 days at $38^{\circ}C$ and 6 hours at $46^{\circ}C$. Heat treatment at $38^{\circ}C$ and $46^{\circ}C$ prior to CA storage greatly reduced respiration rate and ethylene production. The incidence of flesh browning were 35%, 14%, and 5%, in control fruit, heating at $38^{\circ}C$ and $46^{\circ}C$, respectively. The titratable acidity was lower at heated apple than at controlled one.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of pre-harvest factors on fruit quality and the incidence of storage disorders in 'Fuji' apple during CA storage. Incidence of storage disorders varied, depending on the growing regions, field conditions, and altitude of the orchards. Results indicated that fruit maturity may play a crucial role in the incidence and severity of flesh browning and watercore. The incidence of these storage disorders increased with fruit maturity until 180 days after full bloom (DAFB). In addition, occurrence of watercore was correlated with the incidence of flesh browning during CA storage. The incidence of flesh browning was positively correlated with the sum of the diurnal temperature range from September through October and amount of precipitation from August to October in 1996-1999 growing years. These results suggested that 'Fuji' apple should be harvested no later than 180 DAFB because the late harvested fruits were prone to development of watercore which was correlated with the incidence of flesh browing during CA storage in Korea.
Background: The objective of this article is to make some analysis on the process of work and accidents occurring in slaughterhouses, evidenced in the Brazilian documentary film called Flesh and Bone. As such, it was necessary to discuss an alternative theoretical concept in relation to theories about health and safety at work. This alternative discussion focuses on the concepts of biopower and biopolitics. Methods: The use of audiovisual elements in research is not new, and there is already a branch of studies with methodological and epistemological variations. The Brazilian documentary Flesh and Bone was the basis for the research. The analysis of this documentary will be carried out from two complementary perspectives: "textual analysis" and "discourse analysis." Results: Flesh and Bone presents problems related to health and safety at work in slaughterhouses because of the constant exposure of workers to knives, saws, and other sharp instruments in the workplace. The results show that in favor of higher production levels, increased overseas market sales, and stricter quality controls, some manufacturers resort to various practices that often result in serious injuries, disposal, and health damages to workers. Conclusion: Flesh and Bone, by itself, makes this explicit in the form of denunciation based on the situation of these workers. What it does not make clear is that, in the context of biopolitics, the actions aimed at solving these problems or even reducing the negative impacts for this group of workers, are not efficient enough to change such practices.
This study was carried out to develop and characterize a drinking extract of disk abalone to keep the price level and to raise a added value of disk abalone. Fresh raw disk abalone was composed of 29.3% of the shell part, 17.7% of the intestinal part, and 43.9% of the flesh part. and the amount of nutritive substances in the intestinal part were higher those in the flesh part. Arginine was the most abundant amino acid both in raw and drinking extract of disk abalone. Drinking extract prepared with 250 g of the flesh of disk abalone at $100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours was better in color and overall taste than those made with 150 g or 200 g of the flesh. As the extracting temperature was gradually increased or the extracting period was gradually extended, the extracting effect was slightly improved but the color of the extract turned out to undesirable one. The desirable sea tangle extract could be made when 15 g of sea tangle was extracted in 1 l of water at $100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, and which was accorded well with the color of drinking abalone extract. From these results the best drinking extract of disk abalone can be manufactured with 250 g of the abalone flesh extracted in 1 l of water at $100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours.

To determine the characteristics of four different sweet pumpkins (Minimam, Bojjang, Ajikuroi and Kurijiman), juices were made from these varieties. The carotenoids in the flesh were 1.5~2 times higher than those in the skin and were highest in the flesh of the Minimam pumpkin among all the pumpkin varieties studied. The vitamin A contents were higher in the skin than in the flesh, and Minimam had the highest vitamin A content (2,016.57 IU/100 g) while Kurijiman had the lowest (998.83 IU/100 g). The vitamin C contents varied from 43.21 to 82.35 mg%, but there were no significant differences between the flesh and the skin. That of Kurijiman was the highest among the varieties studied. The major mineral of these varieties was potassium, which was highest in the flesh of Ajikuroi, followed by phosphorus. The antioxidant activities of the sweet pumpkin water extracts were higher in the skin than in the flesh. The $EC_{50}$ of the Minimam skin was the highest (4.01 mg/mL), and that of the Ajikuroi flesh was the lowest. The sweet pumpkin juice yields were 69.5~89.4%, with significant differences shown according to the variety. That of the peeled Ajikuroi's flesh was the highest. The pH was 7.17~7.83, and the unpeeled sweet pumpkin's pH was higher than that of the peeled sweet pumpkin. The Brix degree was $12.5{\sim}16.6^{\circ}Brix$, with that of the unpeeled Bojjang being the highest($16.1^{\circ}Brix$) and that of the unpeeled Ajikuroi the lowest ($12.7^{\circ}Brix$). The sweet pumpkin beverage made with pressed juice was adjusted by pH 3.5 with citric acid, and the Brix degree was maintained at the $12^{\circ}Brix$ with sugar. The adjusted beverage, which was the peeled pumpkin flesh juice, had suspension stability for a short time. The sweet pumpkin beverage had a certain flovor and a slimy mouthfeel. Bojjang and Kurijiman were evaluated as the best in the terms of taste and color, but the peeled Minimam and Bojjang showed the best results overall.
