  • In this paper, we studied the maneuvering performances of a ship with flapped rudder. PMM tests were carried out for a ship model with horn type rudder or flapped rudder. The Abkowitz's model was used as a basic mathematical model to simulate the maneuvering motions. The maneuvering motions of a ship with flapped rudder were compared with those of a ship with horn-type rudder. As a result, it was found that the turning ability of a ship with flapped rudder was remarkably improved.

  • A marine flapped rudder is designed to improve the effective lift generated by the rudder; this also improves the maneuverability of the ship. The flap is a high lift device installed at the trailing edge of the rudder to augment lift. In this paper, the characteristics of a thick flapped rudder are analyzed at a low Reynolds number with various ratios of flap chord length to total chord length and various aspect ratios, based on the computational fluid dynamics technique. The performance of the rudder with respect to lift, drag, and center of pressure are investigated, and the efficient ratio of flap chord length to total chord length and improved aspect ratio are determined. Ed: highlight - or 'superior'. As a case study, the flow on the flapped rudder of an NACA0021 section shape in free stream condition is simulated. The standard k-epsilon turbulence model is used to model the flow around the flapped rudder. The results indicate that the efficient ratio of the flap chord length to total chord length and aspect ratio are 0.3 and 1.4, respectively.

  • A Coanda effect which is known to provide a high lift in a high drag condition has been applied to a flapped rudder of a ship. Model experiments and numerical simulations on the Coanda effect of the flapped rudder have been carried out at various situations and the results are compared to each other. It I found that a remarkable increase in the rudder force occur due to the Coanda effect and that the results ould be utilized for the design of a high-lift rudder system.

  • Manoeuvrability of ships has been receiving a great deal of attention both concerning navigation safety and the prediction of ship manoeuvring characteristics, especially at the preliminary design stage. Recently, in order to improve manoeuvrability of ships, High-lift devices could be applied to design of rudder at design stage. Now, among the them, we carried out the flow visualization and investigation of flow field around a flapped rudder(trailing-edge flap). A trailing-edge flap is simply a portion of the trailing-edge section of airfoil that is hinged and which can be deflected upward or downward. Flow visualization results of flap defection shown as follow Photos including main body and flap defection.

  • Ship maneuverability is mainly determined according to hull-propeller-rudder system of a ship and directly related to the ship safety during the operation in the ocean. Among hull-propeller-rudder system the rudder system had direct concern with the ship maneuverability and a special rudder has been recommended to improve the ship maneuverability. In this paper the study of flapped rudder's 2-dimensional section was accomplished Model tests had been carried out with different angles of attack of a main foil and flap's deflection angles to predict the performance of the flapped rudder and the 2 frame particle tracking method had been used to obtain the velocity distribution in the flow field during model tests. $Re=1.027{\times}10^4$ had been used during the whole experiments and measured results had been compared with each other.

  • The purpose in having a control surface on ships is to control the motion of the ship. The control surface may be composed entirely of a single movable surface or of a combination of fixed and movable portions. A control surface has one sole function to perform in meeting its purpose, and that is to develop a control force in consequence of its orientation and movement relative to the water. The forces and moments generated as a result of this rotation and angle of attack then determine the manoeuvring characteristics of the ship. In this paper, two-dimensional flow characteristics of a flapped rudder and a water-blowing control rudder were accomplished respectively by PIV method in a circulating water channel. Model test has been carried out with different angles of attack of main foil (NACA 0012) and flap's deflection angles to predict the performance of the flapped rudder and the water-blowing control rudder. The 2-frame particle tracking method has been used to obtain the velocity distribution in the flow field. $Re{\fallingdotseq}3.0{\times}10^4$ has been used during the whole experiments and measured results have been compared with each other.

  • A low-order potential based boundary element method is applied for the prediction of the performance of flapped rudders as well as all-movable rudders in steady inflow. In order to obtain a reasonable solution at large angles of attack, the location of the trailing wake sheet is determined by aligning freely with the local flow. The effect of the wake sheet roll-up is also included with use of a high order panel method. The flow in the gap of a flapped rudder is modeled as Couette flow and its effect is introduced into the kinematic boundary conditions for flux at both the inlet and the outlet of the gap. In order to validate the present method, the method is applied for a series of rudders and the computational results on forces and moments are compared with experimental data. The effect of the gap size on the forces and moments is also presented.

  • In the development of high speed marine vehicle, lilting devices became important in sharing the pay load or controlling the attitude. The devices are also important to meet the IMO regulation to prevent the marine pollution by keeping the high rudder force for VLCC even in low speed operation. The high lift devices such as the Coanda device have been introduced to the aircraft as a common practice for a long time among the aero-engineers. If the Coanda device can be utilized to the flapped rudder, the severe requirement of rudder force could be provided for the VLCC in low speed operation. The performance of the rudder system has been investigated at the towing tank of Seoul National University.
