In this study, the NOx formation characteristics of one-dimensional $CH_4$/Air premixed flame using detailed-kinetic chemistry are examined numerically. The combustor length and the amount of heat loss are varied to investigate the effect of residence time and heat loss on the NOx formation in a post-flame region. In the flame region, NO is mainly produced by the Prompt NO mechanism including $N_2$O-intermediate NO mechanism over all equivalence ratios. However, thermal NO mechanism is more important than Prompt NO mechanism in the post-flame region. In the case of adiabatic condition, the increase of combustor length causes the remarkable increase of NO emission at the exit due to the increase of residence time. On the other hand, NO reaches the equilibrium state in the vicinity of flame region, considering radiation and conduction heat losses. Furthermore the NO, in the case of $\phi$=1.2, is gradually reduced in the downstream region as the heat loss is increased. From these results, it can be concluded that the controls of residence time and heat loss in a combustor should be recognized as an important NOx reduction technology.
The characteristics of NOx emissions in pure hydrogen nonpremixed flames with coaxial air are analyzed numerically for the three model cases of coaxial air flames classified by varying coaxial air velocity and/or fuel velocity. In coaxial air flames, the flame length is reduced by coaxial air and can be represented as a function of the ratio of coaxial air to fuel velocity. Coaxial air decreases flame reaction zone, resulting in reducing flame residence time significantly. Finally, the large reduction of EINOx is achieved by the decrease of the flame residence time. It is found that because coaxial air can break down the flame self-similarity law, appropriate scaling parameters, which are different from those in the simple jet flames, are recommended. In coaxial air flames, the flame residence time based on the flame volume produces better results than that based on a cube of the flame length. And some portion of deviations from the 1/2 scaling law by coaxial air may be due to the violation of the linear relationship between the flame volume and the flame reaction zone.
Silica(SiO2) nanoparticles are used as additives in plastics and rubbers to improve mechanical, electrical, magnetic properties and optical material. Silica nanoparticles were synthesized by the gas phase thermal oxidation of several kinds of precursors in many types of reactor. Diffusion flame reactor has some advantages compared with other types of reactors. In this study, we investigated the generation of silica nanoparticles on the effect of residence time by tetraethylothosilicate(TEOS) in a turbulent diffusion flame reactor controlled by providing reactant flowrate and reactor geometry affect particle morphology, particle size and particle size distribution. To determine the flame residence time, flame length should be determined which was examined by ICCD image. Particle size, distribution and morphology were performed with TEM.
In oder to analyze the effect of operating conditions on pulverized coal combustion, a numerical study is conducted at the pulverized coal combustor. Eulerian approach is used for the gas phase, whereas Lagrangian approach is used for the particle phase. Turbulence is modeled using standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model. The description of species transport and combustion chemistry is based on the mixture fraction/probability density function(PDF) approach. Radiation is modeled using P-l model. The turbulent dispersion of particles is modeled using discrete random walk model. Swirl number of secondary air affects the flame front, particle residence time and carbon conversion. Primary/Secondary air mass ratio also affects the flame front but little affects the carbon conversion and particle residence time. Air-fuel ratio only affects the flame front due to lack of oxygen. Radiation strongly affects the flame front and gas temperature distribution because pulverized coal flame of high temperature is considered.
The flame lengths and NOx emission characteristics of syngas $H_2$/CO turbulent non-premixed jet flames were investigated. The flame length which is the main parameter governs NOx emission was studied for various syngas compositions. The flame length was compared with previous correlation between Froude number and flame height and it shows that they have good agreements. It was confirmed that the turbulent jet flames herein investigated are in the region of buoyancy-momentum transition. NOx emission was reduced with increased Reynolds number and CO contents in syngas fuel and with decreased fuel nozzle diameter which is attributed by decreased flame residence time. Previous EINOx scaling based on flame residence time of $L_f^3/(d_f^2U_f)$ satisfies only the jet flame in momentum-dominated region, not buoyancy-momentum transition region. The simplified flame residence time ($L_f/U_f$) was adopted in modified EINOx scaling. The modified scaling satisfies the jet flames not only in momentum-dominated region but in buoyancy-momentum transition region. The scaling is also satisfied with $H_2$/CO syngas jet flames.
The relationship among the flame radiation, NOx emissions, residence time, and global strain rate are examined for turbulent non-premixed jet flames with wide variations in coaxial air conditions. Measurements of NOx emission, flame geometry and flame radiation were made to explain the NOx emission scaling based on global parameters such as flame residence time, global strain rate, and radiant fraction. The overall 1/2-power scaling is observed in coaxial air flames, irrespective of coaxial air conditions, but the degree of deviation from the l/2-slope curve in each case differs from one another. From the comparison between the results of pure hydrogen flames and those of helium diluted hydrogen flames, it is observed that flame radiation plays a significant role in pure hydrogen flames with coaxial air and the deviation from 1/2-power scaling may be explained in two reasons: the difference in the flame radiation and the difference in jet similarity in coaxial air flames. From the radiation measurements, more detailed explanations on these deviations were suggested.
Synthesis of carbon nanofibers on a metal substrate by an ethylene fueled inverse diffusion flame was observed. Stainless steel plates were used for the catalytic metal substrate. The effects of radial distance and residence time of the substrate were investigated. The role of hydrocarbon composition in the fuel was also viewed. Nanofibers with a diameter range of 30-70nm were found on the substrate. The carbon nanofibers were formed and grown in the region from 4 to 5.5mm from the central axis of a flame outside of the visible flame front in the radial direction. The minimum residence time required for the formation of carbon nanofibers were about 20 seconds, and over 60 seconds were required for the full-scale growth. The characteristic time of the formation of carbon nanofibers was much shorter than that of the substrate temperature growth. In this study, the variation in hydrocarbon composition had no significant effect on the formation and growth of the carbon nanofibers.

In order to analyze the sensitivity on the pulverized coal flames of the several variables, a numerical study was conducted at the gasification process. Eulerian approach is used for the gas phase, whereas lagrangian approach is used for the solid phase. Turbulence is modeled using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. The turbulent combustion incorporates eddy dissipation model. The radiation was solved using a Monte-Carlo method. One-step two-reaction model was employed for the devolatilization of Kideco coal. In pulverized flame of long liftoff height, the initial turbulent intensity seriously affects the position of flame front. The radiation heat transfer and wall heat loss ratio distort the temperature distributions along the reactor wall, but do not influence the reactor performance such as coal conversion, residence time and flame front position. The primary/secondary momentum ratio affects the position of flame front, but the coal burnout is only slightly influenced. The momentum ratio is a variable only associated with the flame stabilization such as flame front position. The addition of steam in the reactor has a detrimental effect on all the aspects, particularly reactor temperature and coal burnout.
