  • In this article, a video based fire detection framework for CCTV surveillancesystems is presented. Two novel features and a novel image type with their corresponding algorithmsareproposed for this purpose. One is for the slow-smoke detection and another one is for fast-smoke/flame detection. The basic idea is slow-smoke has a highly varying chrominance/luminance texture in long periods and fast-smoke/flame has a highly varying texture waiting at the same location for long consecutive periods. Experiments with a large number of smoke/flame and non-smoke/flame video sequences outputs promising results in terms of algorithmic accuracy and speed.

  • Several studies have developed upward flame spread models which use somewhat different features. However, the models have not considered the transient effects of the igniter and the burning rate. Thus, the objective of this study is to examine a generalized upward flame spread model which includes these effects. We shall compare the results with results from simpler models used in the past in order to examine the importance of the simplifying assumptions. We compare these results using PMMA, and we also include experimental results for comparison. The results of the comparison indicate that flame velocity depends on the thermal properties of a material, the specific model for flame length and transient burning rate, as well as other variables including the heat flux by igniter and flame itself. The results from the generalized upward flame spread model can provide a prediction of flame velocity, flame and pyrolysis height, burnout time and position, and rate of energy output as a function of time.

  • An axisymmetric simulation with detailed chemistry and fine resolution mesh is conducted for the $LOX/GH_2$ jet flame in rocket engine combustor. A preliminary result is shown for a single shear coaxial injector element. The fundamental features of the $LOX/GH_2$ coaxial jet flame is explored by the analysis of simulated flame.

  • In the present approach, the flame-acoustics interaction is represented by FDF (Flame Describing Function) which is a important source term in the Helmholtz' equation. In this study, the combustion instability is analyzed by the forced mode strategy with the measured FDF. Numerical results indicate that the present approach reasonably well predicts the essential features of the combustion instability characteristics in the lean premixed combustor under the gas-turbine like environment.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the flame propagation phenomenon in the combustion chamber of spark-ignition gasoline engine for the idling condition. by means of four ion probes located through the cylinder head, the time intervals for the flame to arrive at the respective probes are read on th visicorder char. As results, the flame is considered to initiate after some ignition delay and to propagate through the central space of combustion chamber with rather constant speed on the order of 25m/sec, and thereafter to be slowed down approaching the wall. Additionally, the retardation of flame in the wall boundary layer could be inferred. The maximum pressure is developed when the flame nearly touches the wall diagonal to the spark plug. And some features of flame propagation are elucidate.

  • Oxy-fuel flame has a significantly different structure from that of air-fuel flame because of its high temperature. This study is aimed to find out the difference of the oxy-fuel flame structure in order to understand reaction mechanism closely, which is crucial to design real-scale oxy-fuel combustion system. By examining pictures of counterflow flame and LIF images, we found that oxy-fuel flame had two-zone structure: fuel decomposition region and distributed CO oxidation region. In the oxy-fuel flame, OH radical was distributed intensely through the whole flame due to its higher flame temperature than crossover temperature. For showing those features of the oxy-fuel flame, 1 MW scale IFRF oxy-natural gas burner was simulated by conditional moment closure(CMC) model. Calculation results were compared with experimental data, and showed agreements in trend. In the simulated distributions of fuel decomposition/CO oxidation rates, CO oxidation region was also separated from fuel decomposition zone considerably, which showed the two-zone structure in the oxy-fuel flame.

  • The flame patterns were investigated in an oscillating combustion burner equipped with a proportioning valve. The proportioning valve is driven by a solenoid and has an elastomer part which controls the valve opening area. For characterizing the valve, nozzle exit velocities were measured with a Hot Wire Anemometry. The flame patterns were investigated by direct photographing methods using a high speed camera and a digital camera. The results show that the nozzle exit velocities could be controlled diversely and rose up and fell down abruptly, so the valve seemed appropriate for the application for the oscillating combustion burner. Mushroom shaped and highly wrinkled flames were a typical features of the oscillating combustion burner. As the oscillating intensity of the fuel flow increased, the flame length was shortened.
