  • Fixed-size memory allocation is one of the most promising way to avoid external fragmentation in dynamic memory allocation problem. This paper presents an experimental result of applying the fixed- size memory allocation strategy to Java virtual machine for embedded system. The result says that although this strategy induces another memory utilization problem caused by internal fragmentation, the effect is not very considerable and this strategy is well-suited for embedded Java system. The experiment has been performed in a real embedded Java system called the simpleRTJ.

  • An MPEG-2/4 AAC decoder on 16-bit fixed-point processor is presented in this paper. To meet audio quality criteria, despite small word length, special design methods for 16-bit foxed-point AAC decoder were devised. This paper presents particular algorithms for 16-bit AAC decoding. We have implemented an efficient AAC decoder using the proposed algorithms. Audio contents can be replayed in the decoder without quality degradation.

  • This paper investigates the varying characteristics of the performance degradation resulting from the different combination of wordlength in fixed-point implementation of recursive sinusoidal transform. The performance degradation is analytically derived in the form of noise-to-signal power ratio. The best wordlength combination is shown to be the equal length distribution of the given number of bits between the transform coefficients and the data. The analysis results are also verified through the computer simulations.

  • Numerical simulation was performed for the rotor blade with fixed tab in hover using an unstructured mesh Navier-Stokes flow solver. The inflow and outflow boundary conditions using 1D momentum and 3D sink theory were applied to reduce computational time. Calculations were performed at several operating conditions of varying collective pitch angle and fixed tab length. The aerodynamic effect of fixed tab length was investigated for hovering efficiency, pitching moment and flapping moment of the rotor blade. The results show that it affects linearly increasing on the pitching moment of the rotor blade but does not affect on the flapping moment. The required power is less than 45kw for ground rotating test in hover. Numerical simulations also show that the vortex generate not only from the tip of the rotor blade but also from the fixed tab on the rotor blade.

  • This paper presents experimental and analytical investigations on additional fixed-end rotations resulting from the strain penetration of high-strength reinforcement in reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column connections under monotonic loading. The experimental part included the test of 18 interior beam-column connections with straight long steel bars and 24 exterior beam-column connections with hooked and headed steel bars. Rebar strains along the anchorage length were recorded at the yielding and ultimate states. Furthermore, a numerical program was developed to study the effect of strain penetration in beam-column connections. The numerical results showed good agreement with the test results. Finally, 87 simulated specimens were designed with various parameters based on the test specimens. The effect of concrete compressive strength ($f_c$), yield strength ($f_y$), diameter ($d_b$), and anchorage length ($l_{ah}$) of the reinforcement in the beam-column connection was examined through a parametric study. The results indicated that additional fixed-end rotations increased with a decrease in $f_c$ and an increase in $f_y$, $d_b$ and $l_{ah}$. Moreover, the growth rate of additional fixed-end rotations at the yielding state was faster than that at the ultimate state when high-strength steel bars were used.

  • This study is to investigate the combustion instability of the variation of combustion chamber length in dual swirl gas turbine model combustor. When equivalence ratio was fixed at 1.1, as the length of the combustion chamber increases the value of the frequency decreased in 7kW while the value of the frequency was constant in 4kW. The analysis of flame behaviors by high speed camera was conducted to identify such trend.

  • In this paper, we propose the high efficiency data compression capable of error control using block-sorting, move to front(MTF) and arithmetic code with variable length in to fixed out. First, the substring with is parsed into length N is shifted one by one symbol. The cyclic shifted rows are sorted in lexicographical order. Second, the MTF technique is applied to get the reference of locality in the sorted substring. Then the preprocessed sequence is coded using VF(variable to fixed) arithmetic code which can be limited the error propagation in one codeword. The key point is how to split the fixed length codeword in proportion to symbol probabilities in VF arithmetic code. We develop the new VF arithmetic coding that split completely the codeword set for arbitrary source alphabet. In addition to, an extended representation for symbol probability is designed by using recursive Gray conversion. The performance of proposed method is compared with other well-known source coding methods with respect to entropy, compression ratio and coding times.

  • This study proposes a formula to calculate length of river bed protection through experimental research and an experimental plant has been installed to investigate the parameters which influence the length of scouring in the river after overflowing the weir. Through hydraulic experiments, the critical velocity, difference of water level between upstream and downstream and height of weir have been selected as independent variables. And new formula to calculate a length of river bed protection is suggested as the result of this study in the consideration of complex weir that consists of movable and fixed weir. The new formula is verified through additional experiments. Results of this study can be used for weir structures' construction and maintenance plans.

  • This work examines the feasibility for estimating existing tensile stress on a stressed wire using the permeability of magnetic flux. A closed magnetic circuit has been constructed to induce magnetic flux inside a steel wire. With different tension stress levels on a wire, the permeability of magnetic flux on the wire has been measured. Two different experimental case studies have been conducted for the examination of sensitivity of permeability of magnetic flux on the stressed wire. One is a varying-length stress test, and the other is a fixed-length stress test. The results show that the permeability of magnetic flux in the varying-length stress test is inversely proportional to the applied stress, while the permeability in the fixed-length stress test is linearly proportional to the applied stress on the stressed wire. It is thus expected that the permeability of magnetic flux on a wire can be a promising indicator for the inspection of its tensile stress.

  • According to the increase of the channel length with fixed width/length, characteristic curves of drain current as a function of gate bias voltage of indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) thin-film transistors moved to a positive direction of gate voltage, and field-effect mobility decreased. In case of fixed length and width of channel, field-effect mobility was lower and subthreshold slope was larger when drain bias voltage was higher. Due to large work function of IGZO, band bending at the junction region between IGZO channel and source/drain electrodes was expected to be in opposite direction to that between silicon and metal electrodes; this could explain the above results.
