The present study investigated the heat/mass transfer characteristics in an equilateral triangular channel simulating the leading edge cooling passage in gas turbine blade. Using naphthalene sublimation method and pressure measurement experiments, local mass (heat) transfer and pressure coefficients were obtained. The experiments were conducted with three rotating numbers between 0.0 and 0.1; two channel orientations of $0^{\circ}$ (model A) and $30^{\circ}$ (model B); the fixed Reynolds number of 10,000. The results showed that the channel rotation caused the heat transfer discrepancy between suction and pressure sides. Due to the secondary flow induced by Coriolis force, the high heat transfer appeared on the pressure side. When the channel orientation was $30^{\circ}$ (model B), the secondary flow caused the more uniform heat transfer distribution among leading edge and inner wall on pressure side than that of the model A.
The sound measurement techniques in IEC 61400-11 are applied to field test and evaluation of noise emission from 1.5 MW wind turbine generator (WTG) at Yongdang-Lee and 650 kW WTG at Hangwon-Lee in Jeju Island. Apparent sound power level, wind speed dependence and third-octave band levels are evaluated for both of WTGs. 1.5 MW WTG at Yongdang is found to emit lower sound power than 660 kW one at Hangwon, which seems to be due to lower rotating speed of the rotor of WTG at Yongdang. Equivalent continuous sound pressure level s (ECSPL) of 650 kW WTG at Hangwon vary more widely with speed than those of 1.5 MW WTG at Yongdang. The reason for this is believed to be the fixed blade-rotating speed of WTG at Yongdang. One-third octave band analysis of the measured data show that the band components around 400-500 Hz are dominant for 1.5 MW WTG at Yongdang and those around 1K Hz are dominant for 660 kW WTG at Hangwon.

A flywheel-type, inclined axis chopper for small-area rice and livestock farmers, has been developed at IRRI Agricultural Engineering, The prototype is belt-driven by a 2.6kW engine and uses four angled blades rotating below a fixed counteredge. Manual feeding is facilitated by a convenient spout presenting the crop to the inclined blade housing and also suction created by the rotating blades . The distance between the rotating blades and the bottom of the housing determines the length of chops, set here for 25 cm. The unit would cost $200 without the engine. Tests with napier grass, corn stalks , and rice straw showed satisfactory performance within the acceptable clearance, speed and moisture content ranges of the material presented. Highest capacities were 1186, 1148 and 744kg/hr for napier grass, corn stalks and rice straw, respectively. Corn stalks required the highest power demand at 2.3kW engine would be adequate as power source. The chopper performance was comparable to higher cost commercial chippers in terms of capacity and specific energy.
Wind turbines are in the limelight in the alternative energy industry. However, they face frequent and various problems during operation. We focused on the supervising of the blades of a wind turbine. In this paper, we present the design of a maintenance robot that takes the size of wind turbine blades into consideration, so the general form of the robot is a square with four wires fixed to its vertices and to the nacelle. After the robot is placed near the nacelle, it moves along the blades. We also designed an attitude control algorithm for the robot to maintain its balance. Our control algorithm for the robot consists of roll and pitch attitude controllers and a height controller. Each controller was designed independently and then superposed together. We used simulations to verify our control algorithm.
Flow patterns were measured in a shrouded centrifugal impeller. The flow rate in measurements was fixed at the value corresponding to a nearly zero incidence at the blade inlet. By using a single slanted hot-wire probe and a Kiel probe mounted on the impeller hub disk, the 3-D relative velocities and the rotary stagnation pressures were measured in seven circumferential planes from the inlet to the outlet of impeller rotating at 700 rpm, and the static pressure distribution along flow passage and the slip factor at impeller outlet were calculated from the measured values. From these measured data, the primary and secondary flows, the wake production and the static pressure rise in the impeller passage were investigated. Furthermore, the secondary flow patterns and the wake's location in this impeller passage were compared with those of the unshrouded impeller.
The frequency characteristics in an axial flow fan operating at a design and three off-design operating conditions have been investigated by measuring the velocity fluctuation of a tip leakage vortex and a wake flow. Two hot-wire probe sensors rotating with the fan rotor. a fixed and a moving ones, were introduced to obtain a cross-correlation coefficient between two sensors as well as the fluctuating velocity. The results show that the spectral peaks due to the fluctuating velocity near the rotor tip are mainly observed in the reverse flow region of higher flow rates than those in the peak pressure operating condition. However, no peak frequency presents near the rotor tip for near stall condition. Detailed wake flow just downstream of the rotor blade was also measured by the rotating hot-wire sensor. The peak frequency of a high velocity fluctuation due to Karman vortex shedding in the wake region is mainly observed at the higher flow rate condition than that in the design point.
The present study investigates the heat transfer characteristics of a triangular channel. Three different rib configurations are tested. The ribs are installed on two sides of the channel. The rib height (e) to channel hydraulic diameter is 0.079 and the rib-to-rib pitch (p) is 8 times of the rib height. The rotation number ranges from 0.0 to 0.1 while the Reynolds number is fixed at 10,000. The copper blocks with heaters are installed on the channel walls to measure the regionally averaged heat transfer coefficients. For the stationary $45^{\circ}$ and $135^{\circ}$ ribbed channels, a pair of counter rotating vortices is induced by the angled rib arrangements, and high heat transfer coefficients are obtained on the regions near the inner wall for the $45^{\circ}$ ribbed channel and near the leading edge for the $90^{\circ}$ ribbed channel. The heat transfer coefficients of angled ribbed channels are changed little with rotation, whereas those of the transverse ribbed channel are changed significantly with rotation.
In the present experiments, vortical structures behind the hydrofoil trailing edge are visualized and analyzed as an elementary study for propeller singing phenomena. Two sorts of hydrofoil are selected for the measurement of shedding vortices. One was KH45 hydrofoil section and the other is KH45 with the truncated trailing edge that is positioned at X/C = 0.9523(C=chord length). Assuming the Strouhal number of 0.23, the shedding frequencies of vortices are extracted by analyzing the boundary layer thickness and the flow speed. The frequency distribution of shedding vortices is obtained with the variation of angle-of-attack while the flow speed is fixed to 8m/s. The truncation of the trailing edge makes the frequency of shedding vortices about 120Hz lower than that of original trailing edge and makes the vorticity value higher than the original trailing edge.
The reduction of noise from wind turbines has been studied using various methods. Some examples include controlling wind turbine blades, designing low-noise-emitting wind turbine blades, and using trailing-edge serrations. Among these methods, serration is considered an effective noise reduction method. Various studies have aimed to understand the effects of trailing-edge serration parameters. Most studies, however, have focused on fixed-wing concepts, and few have analyzed noise reduction or developed a prediction method for rotor-type blades. Herein, a noise prediction method, composed of two noise prediction methods for a wind turbine with trailing-edge serrations, is proposed. From the flow information obtained by an in-house program (WINFAS), the noise from non-serrated blades is calculated by turbulent ingestion noise and airfoil self-noise prediction methods. The degree of noise reduction caused by the trailing-edge serrations is predicted in the frequency domain by Lyu's method. The amount of noise reduction is subtracted from the predicted result of the non-serrated blade and the total reduction of the noise from the rotor blades is calculated.
The three-dimensional flow in a turbine nozzle guide vane passage causes large secondary loss through the passage and increased heat transfer on the blade surface. In order to reduce or control these secondary flows, a linear cascade with a contoured endwall configuration was used and changes in the three-dimensional flow field were analyzed and discussed. Measurements of secondary flow velocity and total pressure loss within the passage have been performed by means of five-hole probes. The investigation was carried out at fixed exit Reynolds number of $4.0{\times}10^5$. The objective of this study is to document the development of the three-dimensional flow in a turbine nozzle guide vane cascade with modified endwall. The results show that the development of passage vortex and cross flow in the cascade composed of one flat and one contoured endwalls are affected by the flow acceleration which occurs in contoured endwall side. The overall loss is reduced near the flat endwall rather than contoured endwall.
