  • In order toidentify the daily activities of five-year-old children in a daycare center, the 23 children in "Yellow" class at "Yellow" Daycare Center were observed for seven months. Research was informed by a qualitative approach. Findings were that : children were rigidly attached to a time frame built into their daily classroom schedule, arranged by time and classroom space allotted to each unit. The meaning to the children was to be found in their "busyness;" they were very busy finalizing activities imposed by teachers within a short period of time. They spent most of their time moving about from one space to another within the classroom, and they played with their mostly artificial toys under rules set by the teacher.

  • This study investigated the cognitive process of 5-year-old children, with a particular focus on gender, monthly age, and their tendencies towards hyperactivity through the performance of the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS; Das & Naglieri, 1997). The children with tendencies towards hyperactivity were identified based on Conners Teachers' Rating Scale (CTRS). The subjects were 75 five-year-old children in Seoul and surrounding metropolitan areas. Data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics, an independent sample t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, one-way ANOVA, and by K-mean cluster analysis. Our results were as follows : (1) The CAS and CTRS' sub-factors were correlated negatively, except the positive correlation between planning factor and hyperactivity factor. (2) Girls exhibited significantly higher CAS scores in planning & sequential processing than boys. (3) The upper monthly age group (68-71 months) showed significantly higher score in terms of planning than the lower monthly age group (60-63 months). (4) The CAS scores of the children with tendencies towards hyperactivity was lower than that of normal children. (5) The CAS profile of 5-year-old children was divided into 4 groups with distinctive characteristics by means of K-mean cluster analysis.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the competence and the methods of problem solving in four operations word problems based on the informal knowledges by five-year-old children. The numbers which are contained in problems consist of the numbers bigger than 5 and smaller than 10. The subjects were 21 five-year-old children who didn't learn four operations. The interview with observation was used in this research. Researcher gave the various materials to children and permitted to use them for problem solving. And researcher read the word problems to children and children solved the problems. The results are as follows: five-year-old children have the competence of problem solving in four operations word problems. They used mental computation or counting all materials strategy in addition problem. The methods of problem solving were similar to that of addition in subtraction, multiplication and division, but the rate of success was different. Children performed poor1y in division word problems. According to this research, we know that kindergarten educators should be interested in children's informal knowledges of four operations including shapes, patterns, statistics and probability. For this, it is needed to developed the curriculum and programs for informal mathematical experiences.

  • This study investigated moral judgment and moral reasoning about aggressive behavior by intention, presentation of results of aggressive behavior, and age of child. Forty-four 3-year old and forty-six 5-year-old day-care children in Seoul and Kyonggi Province were interviewed individually with 20 pictorial tasks. Data analysis was by frequencies, percentiles, means, standard deviations, paired t-test, and ANOVA(repeated measures). Both age groups judged instrumental and resentment-based types of aggression to be worse than prosocial or rule observance-based aggression. Both age groups judged aggressive behavior to be worse when results of aggression were presented. Five-year-olds judged aggression to be worse on instrumental than on retributive types of intent. Level of reasoning on aggressive behavior was lowest in cases of satisfying resentment Level of reasoning about aggression increased with age.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of defining concrete and abstract nouns for the elderly. A total of 382 elderly participated in this study and they were classified into four age groups (i.e., over 55 to under 64, over 65 to under 74, over 75 to under 84, and over 85 year-old group). They performed the word definition task, composed of five concrete and five abstract nouns. The total scores and numbers and ratio of core/supplementary meanings were compared among four elderly groups. The frequency and ratio of error types were also examined. The results showed that all four groups had statistically significant differences in total scores, numbers and ratio of core and supplementary meaning of concrete noun definition task. In addition, abstract noun definition performances revealed group differences except the two groups (over 75 to under 84 and over 85-year-old group). The oldest group showed a sharp increase in error production. The highest ratio of error types were personal experience in over 55 to under 64-year-old group, and over 65 to under 74 year-old groups; and for the target word repetition in over 75 to under 84 year-old group; and no response in over 85 year-old group. In conclusion, both concrete and abstract word defining abilities had age-related deterioration. This decline results from impairment in spreading semantic knowledge within semantic network, which is vulnerable to aging. Characteristics of word definition for elderly can provide basic information to understand various neurolinguistic disorders associated with age.

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the effects of drama activities using children's literature on the improvement of young children's creativity. To answer this research question, 2 groups, an experimental group composed of 18 five-year-old children who attend "J public Kindergarten," and a control group composed of 18 five-year-old children who attend "H public Kindergarten," were organized. Both kindergartens were located in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do. The experimental group participated in drama activities twice a week; 16 times for 8 weeks. In this study, the change in children's creativity was measured by conducting a pre-test and a post-test developed by Chun(2000). The results after 8 weeks of experimentation indicate that the drama activities using children's literature had a positive effect on promoting children's creativity. Comparing the scores of the pre-test and the post-test, it was obvious that the experimental group's creativity had been improved. The experimental group's creativity including the sub-elements of the test such as fluency, flexibility, uniqueness, and imagination, was improved more than that of the controlled group.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the differences in attitudes toward emergent literacy between mothers and fathers in relation to two types of early educational centers and to explore relationships between the parents' attitudes toward literacy and their home literacy environment. The subjects were 1626 parents (813 mothers, 813 fathers), who had three to five years old children, from 14 kindergartens and 11 daycare centers in Seoul. The questionnaire based on Kwon's instrument of emergent literacy altitude (1999) was used. The data were analyzed by two-way ANOVAS, and correlation. The results were as follows : First, there were significant differences in attitudes toward literacy between the mothers and the fathers in relation to their children's ages. The parents of three-year-old children had more positive altitudes toward literacy than ones of five-year-old. The mothers had more positive altitudes toward literacy than the fathers, excepts in reading instructions and writing development. Second, the fathers with daughters had more positive attitudes toward literacy than ones with sons. Third, the kindergarten parents had more positive attitudes toward literacy than daycare parents. Fourth, there were significantly positive correlations between the parents' attitudes toward emergent literacy for young children and their home literacy environments.
