Ships may collide with reefs or other objects during operation, when arriving or departing ports. The hull plate may be damaged due to the contact with other ships. The total number of domestic powered fishing vessels has decreased, but that of FRP fishing vessels has increased by 0.7% and the ratio of FRP fishing vessels to the total fishing vessels increased to 96%. Recently, fishing vessels has been used as fishing boats for income of non-fishermen as well as fishermen. Therefore, safety management for repair and maintenance is necessary. The penetration of moisture and moisture in the composite material such as FRP may deteriorate the mechanical properties and the salt (NaCl) component of the damaged portion may cause a relatively high deterioration in material strength. The gel coat painting is the final stage of repairs ans maintenance of FRP fishing vessels. The thickness criteria in the domestic and foreign gel coat is 0.3~0.762 mm. The joint specimens, which was immersed in seawater for 120 days, were compared with those without seawater immersion. As a result, the tensile strength was 83 ~ 121.8% and the flexural strength was 83 ~ 113% compared with the specimens without seawater immersion. According to the previous study the tensile strength decreased by more than 29% and the flexural strength decreased by more than 50% when the composite material was immersed in seawater for 1,083 hours without coating. As a result, it was found that the gel coat with 0.5 mm thickness is very effective in preventing the strength decrease of the composite material.

Stow-net is originally spreaded with a lifting beam and a depressing beam. The net is improved by using canvas-made spreading devices by Mr. Han and his colleagues in the beginning of 1980's. The net is improved again by changing the partial shape of netting and arrangement of net pendants so as to be fitting with the actual performance of the net by Dr. Lee and his colleagues since 1988. The author studied to compare the fishing efficiency of those two kinds of nets(The former which was improve by Mr. Han is expressed as a traditional net and the latter improved again by Dr. Lee is expressed as an improved net in the present study). Twenty-one stow-netters concerned with the present study were selected among those based on the Port of Inchon, and were classified into two groups-eleven of them are a traditional net used group and ten are an improved net used group. The data on the fishing operation from August 1992 to March 1993, including the catch, the price of sell, the fishing operated times in every cruise and the fished position noticed by every stow-netter were offered by concerned stow-netters. From the data the times of operation, catch and value in every cruise were extracted and analyzed. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The times of operation in cruise were 13.7 by the traditional net used group and 12.7 by the improved net used group. 2. The mean catch per cruise showed 10.1M/T in the traditional net used group and 12.2M/T in the improved net used group, so the latter showed 21% better. 3. The mean catch per operation showed 0.7M/T in the traditional net used group and 0.9M/T in the improved net used group, so the latter showed 28% better. 4. The rate of three important species(starks, hair tail and croakers) in the total catch showed 83%, and the catch showed greater by the improved net used group at the rate of starks 141%, hair tail 110%, croakers 107%. 5. The rate of three important species in the total price showed 82%, but the price of starks which occupied the biggest in catch showed merely 5%, then the economical efficiency appeared low. 6. The mean price per stow-netter and per operation showed about 20%, greater respectively by the improved net used group and the mean price per operation by two important species(hair tail and croakers) showed greater about 30% by the improved net used group.

The fishing conditions of flying squid, ommastrePhes barsram(Lesueur), in the North Pacific Ocean was studied based on the horizontal water temperature data, satellite data from NOAA and statistical data of flying squid fisheries which were collected from 1980 to 1984. The obtained results were as follows; 1. Since 1979, the Korean drift giIlnet fishery for flying squid was launched in North Pacific. Number of operating vessel and catch of flying squid increased gradually every year. The number of vessels were 111 and their annual catches were 42, 977 M/T in 1984. Therefore, Korean drift giIlnet fishery for this species has played an important role in the products of Korean high-sea fisheries. 2. In the beginning of the fisheries, fishing grounds was formed in the west of long. 1800E. In 1982, in consequence of the center which extended eastward, the fishing ground was formed long. 166$^{\circ}$W in the central North Pacific Ocean. Since 1983, the fishing grounds were formed as far as long. 161$^{\circ}$W. The range of general fishing season in the central North Pacific was from June to August. After september, fishing ground was shifted to the west, in the Northwestern Pacific. 3. The Predominant fishing season for the flying squid was August through January of the coming year. Optimum water temperature for flying sguid at surface layer in the Pacific Ocean ranged from 11 $^{\circ}$e to 17$^{\circ}$e in winter, 13$^{\circ}$e to 17$^{\circ}$e in spring, 12. 8$^{\circ}$C to 19.7$^{\circ}$e in summer and 1O.6$^{\circ}$e -18.7$^{\circ}$e in fall. 4. In summer, the Oceanographic condition in the North Pacific Ocean showed that the water temperature at surface layer was lower in 1980, 1983 and higher in 1981, 1982 and 1984 as compared with mean annual water temperature. 5. The characteristics df oceanographic conditions in the fluation, disformation, mixing and other factors of the Kuroshio and Oyashio currents, which have considerably influenced upon the water masses of the areas. 6. The data and information on surface thermal Structure interpreted from Infrared Satellite Imaginary from NOAA-7 and NOAA-8 are very available in estimating water temperature on the areas and investigating the major fishing grounds. 7. According to the fisheries statics of Japanese drift gilInet, the annual catches of flying squid considerably decreased from 225, 942 M/T in 1983 to 133, 217 M/T in 1984. 8. The fishing grounds in the central North Pacific in several fishing seasons were formed as follows: In June, the initial fishing season, the fishing grounds were formed in the vicinity of lat. 35 - 40oN, the central North Pacific east of 179$^{\circ}$E. In July, the fishing ground were formed in the wide arEa of the central North Pacific north of 400N and long. 174$^{\circ}$E-145$^{\circ}$W In Auguest, concentrative fishing operation carried out in :he central North Pacific north of 43$^{\circ}$N and East of 165$^{\circ}$W. On the other hand, in September, main fishing grounds were disappeared and moved to the west.

In this study, we developed a thermoelectric generation system for coastal fishing boats that allows for a high-density arrangement of thermoelectric modules, verified the improvement in performance by conducting comparative analysis between field test results and results from previous studies. The developed thermoelectric generation system was installed in a 3-ton gill-netter to analyze the engine revolutions per minute and energy production per day for each fishing process over a period of 20 days. From the experimental results, the maximum electric energy generated was 207.1 Wh, the minimum was 53.93 Wh and the average electric energy was 129.98 Wh. In accordance with the increasing of the engine r.p.m., the maximum electric production was 183 W at 1,500 r.p.m. It was approximately 80.5% of designed capacity, 227.2 W. Considering the result in the earlier research was 50.7% of designed capacity, 115.8 W. It was improved by 30% compared to the earlier one. The fishing operation was classified as departure, fishing and arrival. From the result on production analysis of electric energy, the composition of energy was 63% in fishing, 19.5% in departure and 17.5% in arrival. The electric energy production per unit hour was 42.8% in arrival, 32.9% in departure and 24.3% in fishing.

Fishing is considered one of the most dangerous industries alongside mining that needs further efforts to improve safety. In this study, we have investigated safety management of the gillnet fishing industry in South Korea through identifying safety level and classifying common accident types from the statements of accident com-pensation insurance payments for the last 5 years (2016-2020). There were in total 3,895 accidents and 159 fatalities with an average accident frequency of 5.34 × 10-2 per year per fisher and an average fatality of 2.18 × 10-3 fishers per year. We have also identified that 62.4% of the accidents occurred during Fishing (FS), and the most common and the most severe accident type is Slips and Trips (ST) and Other (OT) marine accidents such as collision and capsizing, respectively. The hand was most frequently injured. Finally, the risk assessment indicated that most of the accident types of gillnet fishing in South Korea have unacceptable levels of risks, and it is urgent to implement improved safety measures to reduce accidents during gillnet fishing operation. The findings of this study are expected to provide valuable data to create a safer working environment for fishers working on gillnet fishing vessels.

The IMO has made constant efforts for global safety control of fishing vessels operation. As the result varieties of documents, for example, the international conventions, the resolutions, the recommendations and codes were adopted by the Organization. And the Organization contributed to preparing the international standards of marine safety by persuading the member countries to ratify and enforce the documents. The author inspected the content of IMO's activities and recent movement to ensure the safety of fishing vessels and their crew, and obtained the following results in connection with domestic regime. The first is the future prospect and countermeasure against revision and effectuation of "The Torremolinos International Convention for the Safety of Fishing Vessels, 1977". The Authority of Korean Government should make preparations to receive into national legislation as a performance of liability of a party country to the Convention. Secondly, the current domestic legal system has not any serious issues on the education and training for the fishing vessels crew. It is merely necessary to establish and operate the training course for the low grade marine officers.

In this paper, marine casualties occurred in Korean coastal and near-coastal seas, from 1989 to 1993, were analysed. The main results obtained were as follows : 1. According to the numerical component ratio of marine casualties, fishing vessels account for higher portion than other vessels and passenger vessels lower portion. On the other hand, in view of the occurring ratio of that, fishing vessels account for very low rate of accidents and passenger vessels very high rate. 2. Most of marine casualties resulted from the human factors such as careless operation and insufficient engine maintenance, etc. Collision accidents took a majority of all marine accidents in all of vessels, but engine trouble accounted for main cause of accidents in fishing vessels. 3. In view of the results on classifying marine casualties into time zone, great number of accidents took place in dawn, but that of fishing vessels in forenoon. 4. According to the view of the occurring ratio of the injury, the rate was 0.33% in total vessels and 0.18% in fishing vessels. 5. In view of the marine casualties by age and shipboard career, crews with 10~20 years shipboard career raised more marine accidents than others.

In this study the hull form design with minimum resistance of domestic coastal fishing boat using a computer design procedure is carried out. The target boat is G/T 4.99 ton class fishing boat. which is one of the most popular boat in the coastal sea. For the task, the design parameters needed in preliminary stage are selected or determined from the existing boat. which has excellent resistances characteristics. In the EHP estimation during the design procedure, the main objective function is the hull resistance, and the initial hull forms before the optimization are selected from the boats that are in operation now. The EHP values from the hull after optimization process are also compared with those of the original hull to confirm its effect. Also, optimizing is investigated for the hull form to reestimate such factors as stability, laboring environment for the best design. it is expected that the results of this study here can be effectively used to improve the present design status of domestic small fishing boats.
We determined the feasibility of a fishing camera system using an optical fiber as the fishing line by testing a power-over-fiber (POF) module and multimode optical fiber. Operation of the remote camera module (RCM) without the battery was preferred because the removal of the charging or battery replacement section enabled a waterproof single-body type design. The average efficiency of the photovoltaic power converter (PPC) in the tested POF module was 32.6% at 820 nm, and thus, a high-power laser of at least 1.27 W was required for operating the developed RCM with an electrical dissipation of 413 mW. Because the optical fiber was wound on a fishing reel, composite loss composed of bending and tensile loss occurred. To mitigate the composite loss, we employed a simple holder that showed an improvement in the composite loss of 0.38 dB to 0.8 dB, which was considerably better than the losses without the holder.

This study calculated the on-site measurement (Tier 4) of greenhouse gases emitted during the production stage of major fishing periods that utilize set nets and bamboo weir fishing boats. In addition, using theoretically calculated results (Tier 1), the emission factor presented by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was comparatively analyzed. On average, carbon emissions for each operating period in the bamboo weir and set net were calculated to be 0.16 and 3.58 kg CO2 time-1, respectively; and the measurement values (Tier 4) for each tool were about 4-17 times lower than their respective theoretical values (Tier 1). Significant differences were found based on engine performance. As port entry, port departure, and operating periods of the vessels show negligible variation with short distances, the operation of the vessel engine was considered as the main variable for carbon emissions in anchovy set net fishing.
