We have developed a wide-field imaging camera system, called WICZO, to monitor light of the night sky over extended period. Such monitoring is necessary for studying the morphology of interplanetary dust cloud and also the time and spatial variations of airglow emission. The system consists of an electric cooler a CCD camera with $60\%$ quantum efficiency at 500nm, and a fish-eye lens with $180^{\circ}$ field of view. Wide field imaging is highly desired in light of the night sky observations in general, because the zodiacal light and the airglow emission extend over the entire sky. This paper illustrates the design of WICZO, reports the result of its laboratory performance test, and presents the first night sky image, which was taken, under collaboration with Byulmaro Observatory, on top of Mt. Bongrae at Yongweol in January, 2004.
Based on a single juvenile specimen (32.3 mm SL) collected from the northeastern coastal waters of Goseong, Gangwon-do, Nautichthys pribilovius was described as the first juvenile record from Korea. This juvenile fish is characterized by having entire body covered with close-set villous prickles, a blunt triangular ridge above orbit with a palmate cirrus, two blunt occipital projections, preopercle with four blunt spines, and a blackish bar below eye reaching lower margin of preopercle. Some morphometric characters related with growth were also discussed.

This study was performed to obtain the basic data to present rational silvicultural tending plan. It makes these widely distributed pine-oak mixed stand and each of pure stand in middle province on object of this study and do comparative analysis of light condition about stand parameter and natural regeneration according to each slope(north, west and south) conditions of location in central part of South Korea. Sample plots for pine-oak mixed stand and pine and oak pure stand were established on each of southern, northern and western slopes based upon site and growth conditions of the slope. Sample plot was a circle of 0.05ha with a diameter of 25.24 m. A sample plot has between 30 and 40 tree in it. Total 23 sample plots were established; 9 pure pine stands, 8 pine-oak mixed stands. and 6 pure oak stands across lower, middle, upper parts of slopes. Relative light intensity within a stand was' measured by crown- photo(fish-eye lens; 180$^{\circ}$) system through fish-eye lens and by comparing each plot with the denuded through PAR-sensor. The crown closure ratio of pure pine stand (75%) shows much lower than that of mixed stand (90.9%) and pure oak stand (93%). The relative light intensity within a stand showed an opposite result. The crown closure of mixed stands tended to become gradually low as the slope moves from the north to the south, but the relative light Intensity within the stand tended to rise. By analyzing the relationship between the relative light intensity within a stand and stand parameter, light intensity within a stand tended to decrease as the diameter and N/ha increase. Number of oak seedlings and light intensity within a stand is in a straight-line regression relation. In particular, the number of oak seedlings was the highest in mixed stands on the southern slope. But no single pine seedling was found. The unfavorable conditions of l0cm thick litter layer and low relative light intensity in a stand (ranging between 4% and 8%) is considered to prevent pine seeds from germinating.
This study was carried out to examine the acute toxic effects of ammonia to the eel, Anguilla japonica in high temperature and pH levels by histopathological observations. The eels of 40 g average body weight were exposed to 4 different concentrations of total ammonia (0, 10, 20, 30 mg/$\ell$) for 24~120 hours. Each concentration was treated under 4 different levels of pH (7.5, 8.0, 8.5, 9.0) and each of these treatments was tested at 2 different temperatures ($27^{\circ}C$, $32^{\circ}C$). Histopathological changes in gill tissues were observed by hematoxylin-eosin stain. As increasing of pH (from 7.5 to 9.0), water temperature (from $27^{\circ}C$ to $32^{\circ}C$), total ammonia concentration (from 0 mg/$\ell$ to 30 mg/$\ell$) and exposure time (from 24 hours to 120 hours), gill discolorated to dark brown with the naked eye and gill tissues showed hypertrophy of gill lamellae, winding of the secondary gill lamellae, epitherial separation and necrosis histopathologically. When gill lamellae epithelium was separated from the blood vessels, gill discolorated to dark brown with the naked eye.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate human thermal comfort by spatial structure and to explore solutions to improve the thermal environment of a small urban space. The study site was Korea University campus. Thermal conditions were measured to evaluate the quality of the thermal environment in each type of space within the study site. Micrometeorology measurements, analysis of space characteristics for using fish-eye lens photography, and thermal comfort modeling through the use of collected meteorological data, such as temperature and humidity, were performed. Results showed that the level of thermal comfort for humans differs depending on the types of space within the study site. Thermal comfort is better in open spaces than enclosed in the aspect of radiative mean temperature, Predicted Mean Vote(PMV), and Physiologically Equivalent Temperature(PET). This fact is probably due to shadows or buildings or trees that may block solar radiation. Thus, it is necessary to consider the spatial arrangements of buildings and trees to enhance openness and ventilation in the space. Paving materials and exterior building materials should also be selected to lower the radiant temperature. Given these results, a quantitative evaluation on human thermal comfort could propose a way to plan user comfortable small urban spaces. Study methods used and results provided in the study can promote a better way for urban space planning direction to improve environmental quality.
In Pleuronectiformes, blind-side malpigmentation (hypermelanosis) is common in cultured flatfishes, and is economically important. To understand the mechanism of blind-side hypermelanosis in flatfishes, we examined when the malpigmentation initially occurred, and studied how the symptoms proceeded during early development of the starry flounder, Platichthys stellatus. To assess quantitative pattern changes of blind-side skin, we observed morphological development of the whole body from 22 (total length [TL] $10.0{\pm}0.2$ mm and body weight [BW] $8.8{\pm}0.57$ mg) to 110 days (TL $23.4{\pm}0.7$ mm, BW $193.6{\pm}23.3$ mg) after hatching (DAH), and also examined the malpigmented area rate of blind-side skin and the malpigmented fish ratios. The experimental animals were reared in fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) tanks in water at a temperature of $18.9{\pm}1.9^{\circ}C$ and salinity of $32.6{\pm}0.6$ psu and were fed with rotifer and Artemia nauplii from 22 to 48 DAH, and with A. nauplii and commercial feed from 49 to 110 DAH. As results, the first staining patch seen by the naked eye was observed around the area between the anus and pelvic fin or caudal edge of the trunk at 80 DAH (TL $20.6{\pm}0.5$ mm, BW $112.5{\pm}8.8$ mg). The pigmented area and the pigmented fish ratios were significantly increased from 80 to 110 DAH. These results indicated that malpigmentation on the blind side of starry flounder was initially observed at about 2 cm in length and 100 mg in weight, and the pigmented domain on the blind-side skin was continually broadened by the differentiation of pigmented cells (melanophores and xanthophores) with growth.

TCR subunits are members of membrane-bound receptors which allow the fast and efficient elimination of the specific fish pathogens have regulated function in adaptive immunity. Sequence structure of TCR subunits have been reported for various teleosts, but the information of each TCR subunit functional characterization through expression analysis in fish was unknown. In this study, we examined the gene expression of TCR subunits in the early developmental stages and observed transcript levels in various tissues from healthy adult olive flounder by RT-PCR. The mRNA expression of alpha subunit was already detected in the previous hatching step. But the transcripts of another TCR subunit were not observed during embryo development and increased after hatching and maintained until metamorphosis at the same level. It was found that all TCR subunits mRNAs are commonly expressed in the immune-related organ such as spleen, kidney and gill, also weak expressed in fin and eye. TCR alpha and beta subunit were expressed in brain, whereas gamma and delta were not expressed same tissue. The sequence alignment analysis shows that there are more than 80% sequence homology between TCR subunits. Because it has a high similarity of amino acid sequence to expect similar in function, but expression analysis show that will have may functional diversity due to different time and place of expression.

A single specimen (273.1 mm in standard length) of the monacanthid Thamnaconus tessellatus was caught by one-boat trawl from western Jeju Island and then collected at Busan Cooperative Fish Market (BCFM) on 30 May 2015. The specimen is characterized by both head and body with many dark brown spots densely, posterior margin of caudal fin no black, first dorsal spine originates the posterior half of eye, and 34~37 dorsal fin rays. This is the first record of T. tessellatus in Korea; we therefore add the species to the Korean fish fauna. According to the Yamada et al. (1995), we propose the Korean name, "Nam-byeol-jwi-chi" for this species.

The action of melatonin within the body of animals is known to be mediated by melatonin receptors. Three different types of melatonin receptors have been identified so far in fish. However, which of these are specifically involved in puberty onset is not known in fish. We cloned and analyzed the sequence of melatonin receptor 1a (mel 1a) gene in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. In addition, we examined the tissue distribution of gene expressions for three types of receptors, mel 1a, 1b and lc and investigated which of them is involved in the onset of puberty by comparing their expression with that of gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor I (GnRHr I) gene using quantitative real-time PCR from 1 week post hatch (wph) to 24 wph. The mel 1a gene of Nile tilapia consisted of two exons and one bulky intron between them. Mel 1a gene was found to be highly conserved gene showing high homology with the corresponding genes from different teleost. All three types of melatonin receptor genes were expressed in the brain, eyes and ovary in common. Expression of mel 1a gene was the most abundant and ubiquitous among 3 receptors in the brain, liver, gill, ovary, muscle, eye, heart, intestine, spleen and kidney. Mel 1b and mel 1c genes were, however, expressed in fewer tissues at low level. During the development post hatch, expressions of both mel 1a and GnRHr I genes significantly increased at 13 wph which was close to the putative timing of puberty onset in this species. These results suggest that among three types of receptors mel 1a is most likely associated with the action of melatonin in the onset of puberty in Nile tilapia.

Quantitative analysis of myxosporean parasites (Enteromyxum leei and Parvicapsula anisocaudata) were performed using real-time PCR on the internal organs (head kidney, body kidney, intestine, spleen, brain, liver, heart, muscle, blood, and eye) of emaciated Paralichthys olivaceus from farm-A. The highest DNA copy number of E. leei was shown in the intestine (1.3 × 108 copies/mg tissue) of emaciatied P. olivaceus and DNA copy number in the other internal organs (1.3 × 103~4.6 × 105 copies/mg tissue) showed lower than in intestine. From the result of real-time PCR for P. anisocaudata, it was considered mildly infected, due to the low DNA copy numbers of the head kidney (1.3 × 103 copies/mg tissue) and body kidney (9.1 × 103 copies/mg tissue). In order to investigate whether myxosporean parasites can be detected in a non-invasive way, quantitative analysis of E. leei and P. anisocaudata from rearing water of three farms were performed by real-time PCR. The DNA copy number of E. leei from rearing water of farm-A and farm-B were 8 × 104 and 5 × 105 copies/L, respectively. However, it was not detected in farm-C. For P. anisocaudata from rearing water, farm-A, farm-B and farm-C showed 0, 2.0 × 106 and 5.1 × 106 copies/L, respectively.
