  • This is a study of the fish assemblages in eelgrass beds of Geoje Bay on Geoje Island, Korea. Samples were collected by surf net monthly from June 2006 to May 2007. A total 26 species, 1,825 individuals, and 4,483.1 g of fishes were collected. The dominant species were Acentrogobius pflaumii, Aulichthys japonicus, Gymnogobius heptacanthus, Rudarius ercodes, Chaenogobius annularis, Gymnogobius urotaenia, Syngnathus schlegeli, Pterogobius elapoides, Zoarchias glaber, Takifugu niphobles, Zoarchia suchidai. These species accounted for 90.6% of the total number of individuals and 76.2% of the biomass of the fishes collected. The fish assemblages in the eelgrass beds showed clear seasonal changes; the number of fish species and individuals increased in March and were highest in September, whereas the biomass attained its highest level in May and subsequently decreased. Meanwhile the species diversity indices showed their highest value in December.

  • This study investigated the temporal patterns of species composition and abundance of larval fish assemblages through seasonal samplings in the coastal waters off Uljin, East Sea from April 2022 to February 2023. A total of 27 taxa of larval fishes were collected in the study area. The dominant fish larvae were Pseudopleuronectes herzensteini, Sebastes inermis, Ammodytes japonicus, Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae, Rudarius ercodes and Parablennius yatabei constituting 86.6% of total larval fish abundance. The number of species, abundance, and diversity index fluctuated according to season, showing the highest species number and abundance in April (spring) and diversity in July (summer). Larval fish assemblages were divided into three seasonal groups, including spring, summer and winter groups based on relative abundance of each fish larvae. Among abundant fish larvae, P. herzensteini predominated during spring, while P. yatabei and R. ercodes were abundant during summer. S. inermis, A. japonicus and P. yokohamae constituted the most abundant larval fish group during winter. These temporal changes in larval fish assemblages were attributed to seasonal changes in surface water temperature. The results from this study may elucidate our understanding of larval fish diversity and contribute to evaluating the nursery function of coastal habitats in the East Sea.

  • Seasonal variations in species composition and abundance of the fish assemblages in the coastal waters off Gadeok-do were determined using monthly sample collection by a small otter trawl in 2010-2011. Of a total of 65 fishes collected, the dominant species were Leiognathus nuchalis, Clupea pallasii, Thryssa kammalensis, Engraulis japonicus, Repomucenus valenciennei, Sillago japonica, Trachurus japonicus, Pennahia argentatus, Okamejei kenojei, Cynoglossus joyneri, Pholis fangi, Pleuronectes yokohamae, and Zoarces gillii. These 13 fishes accounted for 92.8% of the total number of individuals collected. The number of fish species, number of individuals, biomass, and species diversity indices fluctuated with the seasons. The peak number of fishes occurred in April, whereas the biomass of fishes was highest in August. The numbers and biomass of fishes were lower in February corresponding with the low temperatures, and diversity indices were lower in January than in any other month.

  • The species composition of larval fish assemblages in the Nakdong River estuary, Korea, was determined using monthly samples collected between September 2010 and August 2011 at two stations. A total of forty three larval species were collected during the study. Among forty three taxa of fish larvae, summer gobies, Clupea pallasii, Engraulis japonicus, spring gobies, Konosirus punctatus, winter gobies, Sardinops melanostictus, Coilia nasus were dominant taxa, and these eight taxa accounted for 95.0% in the total number of individuals. Species composition and abundance varied greatly spatio-temprally showing the peak abundances of fish larvae in August 2011, and a few fish larvae were occurred in November 2010. Cluster analysis based on the number of individuals of fish larvae showed that 21 month-station sampling units were classified into five groups at the similarity level of 50%, and the results of ANOSIM and SIMPER analysis revealed significant differences in community structure among five groups.

  • Species composition and seasonal variation of fish assemblages in Sargassum beds in Gamak Bay was determined using fish samples collected monthly by a surrounding net from October 2008 to September 2009. A total of 21 species, 582 individuals and 5,345.1 g of fishes were collected during the study period and Perciformes accounted for 47.6 % of the total number of species. Takifugu niphobles, Engraulis japonicus and Lateolabrax japonicus predominated in number, accounting for 55 % of the total number of individuals. Higher number of species and individuals occurred in June and in September-October. Species were grouped into three by cluster analysis: A) dominant species such as Leiognathus nuchalis and Takifugu niphobles, B) fish collected mainly in spring such as Sebastes inermis, Chaenogobius heptacanthus, Pterogobius zonoleucus, Pholis nebulosa, and Trachyrhamphus serratus, and C) fish collected mainly in autumn such as Engraulis japonicus, Lateolabrax japonicus, and Hyporhamphus sajori.

  • Imha Reservoir is connected to Andong Reservoir via a diversion tunnel allowing water to pass between. The diversion tunnel is equipped with screens to exclude exotic largemouth bass due to their predatory impacts on prey assemblages resulting in a degradation of species richness of local fish fauna and extinction of local fish populations in Korea. Flow pattern changes resulting from the fish screens and trash racks were investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Numerical simulations showed that the decrease in the discharge capacity of the tunnel is approximately 8.6% and the headloss coefficient for fish screen at Andong intake tower was determined to be 1.5. In order not to allow the small fishes enough to pass through the wire openings enter into Imha Reservoir through tunnel, the velocity in the tunnel should be greater than 1.48 m/s which is a critical ascending velocity of the bass. This study suggests that it can keep the velocity higher enough to exclude largemouth bass when a gate opens with the condition of 1.0m difference in water stage between two reservoirs.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of fish larvae assemblages in the south-western Jinhae Bay were investigated monthly in 2009. During the study period, 49 larvae species belonging to 24 families were collected. The dominant species were Clupea pallasii, Hexagrammos otakii, Konosirus punctatus, Engraulis japonicus, Parablennius yatabei, and Omobranchus elegansei. These six species accounted for 92.7% of the total number of individuals collected. The number of species, number of individuals, and species diversity indices fluctuated with the seasons. The peak number of species and individuals occurred in July and January, respectively. Principal component analysis(PCA) and correlation analysis showed that variation in monthly water temperature could act as an indicator of seasonal variation in community structure and abundance of the dominant species; in particular, those of C. pallasii, H. otakii, E. japonicus and P. yatabei corresponded with the water temperature.
