  • [ $LiNiO_2$ ] was mixed with $TiO_2$ or ZnO for the preparation of a cathode. The electrochemical properties of the cathode were investigated and the effects of the addition of $TiO_2$ or ZnO were discussed. The first discharge capacity decreased as the quantity of the added $TiO_2$ or ZnO increased. It is probably due to the decrease in the area of reaction interface according to the increase in the amount of the added oxide. When 2wt.% and 5wt.% of oxides are added, the discharge capacity increased as the number of cycles increased. It is considered that this results from the increase in the area of reaction interface because the oxide is detached from the $LiNiO_2$ with the increase in the number of cycles. The 1wt.% $TiO_2$ or ZnO-added $LiNiO_2$ had a larger first charge capacity than $LiNiO_2$. This is considered to result from the deintercalation of Li ions in the Ni sites along with the Li ions in the Li sites.

  • The purpose of this study is to research and develop tin oxide-flash composite for lithium Ion polymer battery. Tin oxide is one of the promising material as a electrode active material for lithium Ion polymer battery (LIPB). Tin-based oxides have theoretical volumetric and gravimetric capacities that are four and two times that of carbon, respectively. We investigated cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge cycling of SnO-flyash/SPE/Li cells. The first discharge capacity of SnO-flyash composite anode was 720 mAh/g. The discharge capacity of SnO-flyash composite anode 412 and 314 mAh/g at cycle 2 and 10 at room temperature, respectively. The SnO-flyash composite anode with PVDF-PMMA-PC-EC-$LiClO_4$ electrolyte showed good capacity with cycling.

  • LiMn$_2$O$_4$ compounds were synthesized by calcining a mixture of LiOH and MnO$_2$(CMD) at 47$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 h and then calcining again at $650^{\circ}C$ to 90$0^{\circ}C$ fur 48 h in air with intermediate grinding. All the synthesized samples exhibited XRD patterns for the cubic spinel phase with a space group Fd3m. The lattice parameter increased gradually as the sintering temperature rose. The electrochemical cells were charged and discharged fur 20 cycles at a current density 300$\mu$A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ between 3.5 V and 4.3 V. The voltage vs. discharge capacity curves for all the samples showed two plateaus. The LiMn$_2$O$_4$ sample calcined at 90$0^{\circ}C$ had the largest first discharge capacity. This sample exhibited the best crystallinity, had relatively large lattice parameter and had relatively large particles with rectatively homogeneous size. All the samples showed good cycling performances. Among all the samples, the LiMn$_2$O$_4$ calcined at 85$0^{\circ}C$ had relatively large first discharge capacity and very good cycling performance. The addition of excess LiOH and the mixing in ethanol considered to help the formation of the more LiMn$_2$O$_4$ phase per unit weight sample and the more stable LiMn$_2$O$_4$phase. These led to the larger discharge capacities and the better cycling performances. The cyclic voltammograms fur the second cycle of the LiMn$_2$O$_4$ samples showed the oxidation and reduction peaks around 4.05 V and 4.18 V and around 4.08 V and 3.94 V, respectively. The larger first discharge capacity of the sample calcined at the higher temperature is related to the larger lattice parameter.

  • Disordered carbon and boron-substituted disordered carbons $C_{l-x}B_x(x=0.05,\;0.10,\;0.20)$ were synthesized by Pyrolysis of LPG(liquid Propane gas)and $BCl_3$. Their electrochemical properties as anode materials for Li-ion secondary batteries were then investigated. When PVDF is added to the sample in a weight ratio 5 : 95, the disordered carbon with x=0.00 had the first discharge capacity 374 mAh/g. Its cycling performance was relatively good from the second cycle and it had the discharge capacity 258 mAh/g at the 10th cycle. When PVDF is added to the sample in a weight ratio 5 : 95, the sample with x=0.05 among the samples $C_{l-x}B_x(x=0.05,\;0.10,\;0.20)$ exhibited the largest first discharge capacity 860 mAh/g and discharge capacity 181 mAh/g at the 10th cycle. All the samples had similar cycling performances from the second cycle. The sample $C_{0.90}B_{0.10}$ showed the best electrochemical properties as a anode materials fur Li-ion secondary battery from the view points of the first discharge capacity(853 mAh/g when $10w1.\%$ PVDF is used), cycling performance, discharge capacity(400mAh/g at the 10th cycle when $10wt.\%$ PVDF is used). All the samples showed generally larger charge and discharge capacities when $10wt.\%$ PVDF ratter than $5wt.\%$ PVDF is used. The plateau region in the range of voltage lower than 1.25V becomes larger probably since the structure becomes less disordered by the addition of boron. When boron is added, the charge and discharge capacities decreased suddenly at the second cycle. This may be become only a part of Li are reversibly deintercalated and intercalated and a part of Li which are strongly combined with B are not deintercalated. The increases in charge and discharge capacities are considered to be resulted from the increase in the potential of Li in the boron-added carbons, caused by the strengthening of the chemical bond between the intercalated Li and the boron-carbon host since the boron acts as electron acceptor.

  • A hybrid supercapacitor (HS) is an energy storage device used to enhance the low weight energy density (Wh/kg) of a supercapacitor. On the other hand, a sudden decrease in capacity has been pointed out as a reliability problem after many charge/discharge cycles. The reliability problem of a HS affects the early aging process. In this study, the capacity performance of a HS was observed after charge/discharge. For detailed analysis of the initial charge/discharge cycles, the charge and discharge curve was measured at a low current density. In addition, a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer was confirmed after the charge/discharge. A HC composed of a lithium titanate (LTO) anode and active carbon cathode was used. The charge/discharge efficiency of the first cycle was lower than the late cycles and the charge/discharge rate was also lower. This behavior was induced by SEI layer formation, which consumed Li ions in the LTO lattice. The formation of a SEI layer after the charge/discharge cycles was confirmed using a range of analysis techniques.

  • We investigated on the additive effect of carbon nanotube in the sulfur electrode on the first discharge curve and cycling property of lithium/sulfur cell. The sulfur electrode with carbon nanotube had two discharge plateau potentials and the first discharge capacity about 1200 mAh/g sulfur. The addition carbon nanotube into the sulfur electrode did not affect the first discharge behavior, but improved the cycling property of lithium/sulfur cell. The optimum content of carbon nanotube was 6 wt% of sulfur electrode

  • Phospho-olivine $LiFePO_4$ cathode materials were prepared by hydrothermal reaction. Carbon black was added to enhance the electrical conductivity of $LiFePO_4$. The structural and morphological performance of $LiFePO_4$ and $LiFePO_4$-C powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and FE-SEM. $LiFePO_4/SPE/Li$ and $LiFePO_4$-C/SPE/Li cells were characterized electrochemically by charge/discharge experiments. The results showed that the discharge capacity of $LiFePO_4$-C/SPE/Li cell was 103 mAh/g at the first cycle. The discharge capacity of $LiFePO_4$-C/SPE/Li cell with 5 wt% carbon black was the largest among $LiFePO_4$-C/SPE/Li cells, 126 mAh/g at the first cycle and 123 mAh/g after 30 cycles, respectively. It was demonstrated that cycling performance of $LiFePO_4$-C/SPE/Li cell with 5 wt% carbon black was better than that of $LiFePO_4$/SPE/Li cell.

  • The relation of crystal phase and charge/discharge capacity of $Li[Li_yMn_{2-y}]O_4$ were studied for different degrees of Li substitution (y). All cathode material showed spinel phase based on cubic phase in X-ray diffraction. Other peaks didn't show in spite of the increase of y value in $Li[Li_yMn_{2-y}]O_4$. Ununiform of $Li[Li_yMn_{2-y}]O_4$ which calcinated by (111) face and (222) face was more stable than that of pure $LiMn_2O_4$. In addition, At TG analysis, calcined $Li[Li_{0.1}Mn_{1.9}]O_4$ exhibited much mass loss at $800{\mu}m$. The cycle performance of the $Li(Li_yMn_{2-y}]O_4$ was improved by the substitution of $Li^{1+}$ for $Mn^{3+}$ in the octahedral sites. Specially, $Li[Li_{0.08}Mn_{1.92}]O_4$ and $Li[Li_{0.1}Mn_{1.9}]O_4$ cathode materials showed the charge and discharge capacity of about 125mAh/g at first cycle, and about 95mAh/g after 70th cycle. It is excellent than that of pure $LiMn_2O_4$, which 125mAh/g at first cycle, 65mAh/g at 70th.
