In this study, we investigated the effects of wind speed and direction on building fires using GIS and a CFD model. We conducted numerical simulations for a fire event that occurred at an apartment in Ulsan on October 8, 2020. For realistic simulations, we used the profiles of wind speeds and directions and temperatures predicted by the local data assimilation and prediction system (LDAPS). First, using the realistic boundary conditions, we conducted two numerical simulations (a control run, CNTL, considered the building fire and the other assumed the same conditions as CNTL except for the building fire). Then, we conducted the additional four simulations with the same conditions as CNTL except for the inflow wind speeds and direction. When the ignition point was located on the windward of the building, strong updraft induced by the fire had a wide impact on the building roof and downwind region. The evacuation floor (15th floor) played a role to spread fire to the downwind wall of the building. The weaker the wind speed, the narrower fire spread around the ignition point, but the higher the flame above the building reaches. When the ignition point was located on the downwind wall of the building, the flame didn't spread to the upwind wall of the building. The results showed that wind speed and direction were important for the flow and temperature (or flame) distribution around a firing building.

In this study, the relationships between the material properties of the wall and the fuel mass flux in compartment fire. The fire resistant board (fire-board) and steel plate compartments are constructed with a 0.3 m width, 0.5 m height and 3.0 m length. To obtain the mass loss rate considering the location of the fire origin in compartment, experiments of a heptane pool fire are performed with a combustion area of $0.01m^2$ and $0.0225m^2$. The results show that the initial mass flux of heptane, $0.0087kg/m^2{\cdot}s$, is increased to $0.166kg/m^2{\cdot}s$ for fire board and $0.019kg/m^2{\cdot}s$ for steel plate. It means that the fire-scenario should be considered with the thermal characteristics of the material properties and geometric shapes of the compartment to predict fire propagation accurately in a compartment space.
The present study investigates the hydrodynamic force acting on the vertical wall of a portable water storage tank which has reentrant bottom topology. To numerically simulate the lapping waves in the tank, functional iterative method for the linearized Peregrine's model which numerically simulates the propagating waves over the slowly-sloped bottom topology is introduced. The numerical experiment condition is controlled to adjust the position and the height of the water supplying nozzle. Finally, it is observed that the maximum wave height at the vertical wall and the ratio of hydrodynamic force to hydrostatic one are amplified accordingly. Therefore it must be give attention to this bad effect of amplified hydrodynamic force by the supply method of fire water in order to have the structural stability of the portable water storage tank when it was used on the reentrant bottom topography.

In the present experimental study, the effect of water-based iron(III) oxide nanofluid on the MFB(Minimum Film Boiling) point during quenching was investigated. As the highly heated test specimen, the cylindrical stainless steel rod was used, and as the test fluids, the water-based iron(III) oxide nanofluids of 0.001 and 0.01 vol% concentrations were prepared with the pure water. To examine the effect of location in the test specimen, the thermocouples were installed at the bottom and middle of wall, and center in the test specimen. Through a series of experiments, the experimental data about the influences of nanofluid concentrations, the number of repeated experiments, and locations in the test specimen on the reaching time to MFB point, MFBT(Minimum Film Boiling Temperature), and MHF(Minimum Heat Flux) were obtained. As a result, with increasing the concentration of nanofluid and the number of repeated experiments, the reaching time to MFB point was reduced, but the MFBT and MHF were increased. In addition, it was found that the effect of water-based iron(III) oxide nanofluid on the MFB point at the bottom of wall in the test specimen was observed to be greater than that at the middle of wall and center. In the present experimental ranges, as compared with the pure water, the water-based iron(III) oxide nanofluid showed that the maximum reduction of reaching time to MFB point was about 53.6%, and the maximum enhancements of MFBT and MHF were about 31.1% and 73.4%, respectively.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to test the sprinkler performance to protect the wall and ceiling joints of the sandwich panel warehouse in case of fire. Method: Based on the field surveys, test was setup and combustibles were prepared. The sprinkler discharge tests were performed at the corner of the wall and right under the sprinkler head. Results: It has been found that operation of the K-80 closed sprinkler head prevents the ignition of the sandwich panel and therefore no damage to the joints of sandwich panels. To prevent skipping phenomenon, it is necessary to install the sprinkler head from the corner of the wall and to keep a minimum distance of 2.4m and a maximum distance of 3m. Conclution: A Standard Operation Procedure should be prepared to suppress and rescue of fire brigade for a sandwich panel warehouse protected by perimeter sprinklers preventing a ignition of core materials and control fire.

This study examined the reduction effect of a hydrodynamic force acting on the vertical wall of a portable water storage tank with a convex bottom floor. For the numerical simulation, the linearized Peregrine's equation was used to analyze the lapping waves in the tank caused by water falling from a supplying nozzle. The hydrodynamic force could be calculated by measuring the maximum run-up wave height at the vertical wall. The initial conditions of the numerical experiments were set up by controlling the positions and heights of the water supplying nozzle. Finally, the hydrodynamic force acting on the vertical wall can be reduced by the convex bottom design of the portable water storage tank so it can be applied to improve the structural stability.

In Korea, starting with the Busan residential-commercial fire in 2010, the frequency of fire expansion in high-rise buildings has been continuously increasing. In the case of such large-scale fires, most of the fires generated from the inside tend to expand to the upper floors by riding the exterior material or exterior wall panels through the process of being ejected to the outside. It has been revised so that combustible exterior materials cannot be used in buildings. However, due to the legal fluoride level, the fire risk of high-rise buildings is still high, such as the case of a 33-story residential-commercial fire in Ulsan. In order to prevent such fire expansion, it is considered that it is necessary to first understand the nature of the fire occurring inside and the mechanism of the fire expansion in the upper floor. The purpose of this study is to propose improvements in domestic fire safety design through a review of existing literature to prevent fire expansion of high-rise buildings.
The purpose of this study is to examine the function of wall posts in pit-houses in the Bronze Age, in the Kyung-nam Province. Wall posts were found as post-holes, created after wooden posts had decayed. In this research, the role of wall posts is newly defined from the perspective of a construction engineering. While existing studies in archaeology regard wall posts as sub-posts that support the roof of a pit-house, this study views wall posts as piles installed to support the soil wall, not as sub-posts. Based on the existing reports on excavation in prehistoric settlement sites by archaeologists, the study examines the remnants of the wall posts and remains after a fire. The main findings of this study are threefold. First, the wall posts were installed not as posts but as piles, cut sharply and hammered along the building lines of a pit-house. Second, wall piles were used to support the walls during earthwork, such as excavating and banking for low ground, mostly because a large amount of soil is often lost during the process. Third, wall piles were used as post piles of retaining walls that enabled the installation of transverse wall panels, which were used to prevent the soil loss.

The modeling on fire safety assessment for a tall and narrow atrium is carried out using a reduced and full scale atrium models based on the performances of flow behavior in and near comer fire and smoke ventilation system. The comer (or wall) effects on the flame behavior considering air entrainment into a flame was evaluated theoretically and experimentally. Temperature, upward velocity, inlet air velocity, and pressure difference between the atrium space and atmosphere were measured systematically in a reduced scale model. The performance of the modeling to estimate temperature rise and natural air ventilation volume was verified based on the experimental results. Smoke filling rate from a model fire source set at the center of a tall and narrow atrium is fastest in the other cases in which fire source set in or near a corner. This suggested that the centering of the fire source is acceptable as the fire source position to assess the fire safety design for a tall and narrow atrium.
Recently, the number of cases of fire spreading due to exterior materials of buildings is increasing. Due to the nature of modern architecture, which emphasizes the aesthetics of buildings, because buildings pursue a splendid appearance, they are inexpensive and have relatively good insulation performance, but an increasing number of buildings are adopting insulation materials that have poor fire safety performance. The risk of spread is also greatly increased. Since the exterior wall of a building is made of a variety of materials and structures, it is composed of a combination of several elements, including materials such as insulation and finishing materials. Therefore, it was determined that it was necessary to introduce a more systematic evaluation method for building exterior materials, and to improve the system reflecting this, away from the existing evaluation method that only checked the fire safety performance of finishing materials.
