This paper examines a methodology for computing the probability of structural failure of reinforced concrete beams subjected to fire. The significant load variables considered are dead load, sustained live load and fire temperature. Resistance is expressed in terms of moment capacity with random variables taken as yield strength of steel, concrete class (or grade of concrete), beam width and depth. The flexural capacity is determined based on the design equations recommended in Indian standard IS456:2000. Simplified method named $500^{\circ}C$ isotherm method detailed in Eurocode 2 is incorporated for fire design. A transient thermal analysis is conducted using finite element software ANSYS$^{(R)}$ Release15. Reliability is evaluated from the initial state to 4h of fire exposure based on the first order reliability method (FORM). A procedure is coded in MATLAB for finding the reliability index. This procedure is validated with available literature. The effect of various parameters like effective cover, yield strength of steel, grade of concrete, distribution of reinforcement bars and aggregate type on reliability indices are studied. Parameters like effective cover of concrete, yield strength of steel has a significant effect on reliability of beams. Different failure modes like limit state of flexure and limit state of shear are checked.

There are no International Standards or Criteria pertaining to fires inside tunnels at the moment, but there are some fire-related regulations in some advanced countries such as Germany and the Netherlands where some fire-related studies have been expedited. Germany has established regulations related to the safety of structures by stipulating Fire Curves of RABT and EBA Tunnels. Also, the Netherlands has established the resistance capacity of structures by stipulating RWS curve so that they can prevent the adjacent area from being damaged due to a tunnel collapse. Hydrocarbon Fire Curve is the standard assessing the behaviour of a structure in a serious fire, by increasing the heating speed and the maximum temperature of ISO 834 Curve, while MHC Fire Curve, which was established in France, realizes more serious fire conditions. In this study, we aimed to develop the basis of full-sized experiments, with which you can assess the fire-resisting capacity against the fire strength of concrete PC panel lining, through the realization of various tunnel fire curves as mentioned above, by developing the heating furnace suitable for the requirements of Fire-Resisting Standards, with which you can assess the fire damage of tunnel concrete lining. We have developed various conditions of the heating furnace and the method to install a thermo couple within the furnace based on EFNARC and KS F2257-1. We have also conducted a calibrating experiment in order to secure its reliability.

The object of this paper is to find the characteristics of fire proof materials through an analytical method and to suggest a proper approach for fire-proof design of reinforced concrete beam strengthened with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP). Heating tests for fire-proof materials were conducted and the thermal conductivities and specific heats of them were simulated through finite element analyses. In addition, a finite element analysis on the beam specimen strengthened with FRP under high temperature, which was conducted by previous researchers, was performed and the analytical result was compared with test result. And then the compatibility of the analytical approach was evaluated. Finally, the heat resistance characteristic of RC beam strengthened with FRP was analyzed by the proposed analytical method and the strength decrease of the beam due to the high temperature was evaluated. From the comparison with analytical and test result, it was found that the heat transfer from outside to inside through the fire-proof materials can be suitably simulated by using the proposed analytical approach.

Concrete filled steel tube system has two major advantages. First, the confinement effect of steel tube improves the compressive strength of concrete. Second, the load capacity and deformation capacity of members are improved because concrete restrains local buckling of steel tube. It does, however, involve workability problem of using stud bolts or anchor bolts to provide composite effect for larger cross-sections. While the ribs inside the columns are desirable in terms of compressive behavior, they cause the deterioration in load capacity upon in-plane deformation resulting from thermal deformation. Since the ribs are directly connected with the concrete, the deformation of the ribs accelerates concrete cracking. Thus, it is required to improve the toughness of the concrete to resist the deformation of the ribs. Welding built-up tubular square columns can secure safety in terms of fire resistance if the problem are solved. This study focuses on mixing steel fiber in the concrete to improve the ductility and toughness of the columns. In order to evaluate fire resistance performance, loaded heating test was conducted with 8 specimens. The behavior and thermal deformation capacity of the specimens were analyzed for major variables including load ratio. The reliability of heat transfer and thermal stress analysis model was verified through the comparison of the results between the test and previous study.

When the queue length of congestion vehicles in tunnel fire is extended beyond tunnel length, the capacity of smoke control system needs to be increased in line with ventilation resistance. However, the vehicle queue length is not defined, so a rational equation is necessary in current fire prevention guideline. This study is intended to propose an equation to calculate the queue length considering the number of vehicles in queue in tunnel fire and evaluate the applicability by tunnel length as well. When it comes to normal tunnel, it is necessary to compare the vehicle queue length with tunnel length up to the length of 1,200 m in a bid to avoid applying the vehicle queue length excessively in case of fire. As a result of evaluation of applicability to model a tunnel, saving the number of jet fan for smoke control appeared to be effective. Besides, quantitative approach to explain the vehicle queue length through the relationship between the percentage of large vehicles and tunnel length was presented. Consequently, when the queue length of the congestion vehicles exceeds the tunnel length in determining the capacity of smoke control system in case of fire, the number of vehicles beyond the tunnel length needs to be excluded from estimating the ventilation resistance by vehicles.

In recent years, RC structures need reinforcement due to physical and chemical deterioration, reduction of serviceability and structural capacity. For reinforcement of RC structures, steel plate attachment, area increase and composite fiber sheet attachment methods are used, but there are some problems like weight increase, workability, quality control and fire resistance capacity. This study presents the effectiveness of flexural reinforcement of RC beams using composite rods that are inserted in high strength special purposed polymer mortar.
Current industrial practices and approaches are simplified and do not describe the actual behavior of plated elements of offshore topside structures for safety design due to fires. Therefore, it is better to make up for the defective methods with integrated fire safety design methods based on fire resistance characteristics such as residual strength capacity. This study numerically investigates the residual strength of steel stiffened panels exposed to hydrocarbon jet fire. A series of nonlinear finite element analyses (FEAs) were carried out with varying probabilistic selected exposures in terms of the jet fire location, side, area, and duration. These were used to assess the effects of exposed fire on the residual strength of a steel stiffened panel on a ship-shaped offshore structure. A probabilistic approach with a feasible fire location was used to determine credible fire scenarios in association with thermal structural responses. Heat transfer analysis was performed to obtain the steel temperature, and then the residual strength was obtained for the credible fire scenarios under compressive axial loading using nonlinear FEA code. The results were used to derive closed-form expressions to predict the residual strength of steel stiffened panels with various exposure to jet fire characteristics. The results could be used to assess the sustainability of structures at risk of exposure to fire accidents in offshore installations.
Concrete-filled square steel tube (CFT) columns have inherently high fire resistance and load-bearing capacity. Nevertheless, it is sometimes necessary to improve their fire resistance using external fire protection. This paper presents the experimental results of the temperature distribution of CFT columns with fire protection. A fire load test was carried out by exposing small-scale specimens to heat in an electric furnace that was especially built for testing loaded columns. The temperature distribution of CFT columns under constant axial loads was determined, as were its significant parameters, such as the types of fire protection and thickness, the thickness of the square CFT, and the fire duration times. The results of this study showed the temperature distribution of each specimen of the electric furnace and the temperature distribution properties of concrete and steel. In addition, the axial displacement and local buckling behavior of CFT columns based on temperature changes was observed.
The field of structural fire engineering has evolved within the construction industry, driven largely by the acceptance of performance-based or goal-based design. This evolution has brought two disciplines very close together - that of structural engineering and fire engineering. This paper presents an overview of structural systems that are frequently adopted in tall building design; typical beams and columns, concrete filled steel tube columns and long span beams with web openings. It is shown that these structural members require a structural analysis in relation to their temperature evolution and failure modes to determine adequate thermal protection for a given fire resistance period. When this is accounted for, a more explicit understanding of the behaviour of the structure and significant cost savings can be achieved. This paper demonstrates the importance of structural fire assessments in the context of tall building design. It is shown that structural engineers are more than capable of assessing structural capacity in the event of fire using published methodologies. Rather than assumed performance, this approach can result in a safe and quantified design in the event of a fire.
When the concrete and steel combined composite beam is exposed to high temperature, concrete could delay temperature rising of steel by covering or increase heat capacity of structural member. For becoming of structural reinforcing by unification between materials, fire resistance rate of composite beam would be higher than simple steel beam. The temperature rising of exposed steel of composite beam is directly related with section shape and exposure length of steel. In this study, fire resistant tests were carried out for composite beams and steel beam with same thickness of spray-type fire resistant materials in standard fire, and after that, temperature histories were analysed and compared with shape factor. The correlation between steel temperature and shape factor was showed very high. This result suggests that if it can be predict the comparative advantage of member by factor which cause the performance enhancement, it could be conclude that an Standard Accreditation method can be adjust to members without indivisual certifiicate of accreditation.
