Growth and flowering of Cymbidium 'Red Fire' and 'Yokihi' plants were examined in a greenhouse with cooling systems in summer, and with night interruption (NI) lighting in winter as a forcing culture system. The greenhouse was divided into two sections with separate cooling controls during the summer season. One section was cooled by a mist system (mist), while the other section was cooled by a shade screen (shade). During the winter, the greenhouse was redivided into three sections within each cooling system. Plants were grown with NI either at a low light intensity of $3-7{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$(LNI) or a high l ight intensity of $120{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$(HNI) u sing h igh-pressure sodium l amps during the 22:00-02:00 HR. The control plants were grown under 9 h short-day condition. NI for 16 weeks and cooling for 9 weeks were employed twice during the 2 years of the experimental period. The air temperature was approximately $2^{\circ}C$ lower in the mist than in the shade and the relative humidity was 80 ${\pm}5%$ in the mist compared to $55{\pm}5%$ in the shade. The daily light integral in the mist section was 48% higher than in the shade section. The time from initial planting to flowering pseudobulb emergence decreased with both LNI and HNI for both cultivars, regardless of the cooling treatments. Under NI conditions, however, between 60% and 1 00% of plants of both cultivars flowered in the mist, whereas no or 20% of 'Red Fire' or 'Yokihi' plants, respectively, flowered in the shade treatment over 2 years. Plants grown under the mist had bigger pseudobulbs than those grown in the shade under both NI treatments. These results show that commercial use of NI in winter and a mist cooling system in summer would decrease crop production time to 2 years and increase profits in Cymbidium forcing culture.
In this study, the probability of exceeding capacity for 4 check dams in Muju mountain region have been estimated. From the results, optimum design of check dam and safety according to wild fire have been discussed. Reliability model has been established by using MSDPM for calculating debris yield to estimate the probability of exceeding capacity of check dam. Probability of exceeding capacity for 4 check dams has been estimated according to maximum rainfall intensity of return periods (10year, 50year, 100year, and 200year). It was found that 1 check dam of Samga-ri basin and 1 check dam of Jeungsan-ri basin were designed by overestimation and 61% and 47% of capacity should be reduced, respectively. Furthermore, probability of exceeding capacity according to burned area has been estimated and compared. It was found that check dam of Sanga-ri basin is the weakest for the wild fire effect in this study area.
In every summer season, most of the slope failures and debris flows occurr due to seasonal rain, typhoon, and localized extreme rainfall in Gangwon Province where 83% of the area is of mountain region. To investigate the slope-hazard triggering rainfall characteristics in Gangwon Province, slope hazard data, precipitation records, and forest fire data were collected and the DATABASE was constructed. Analysis results based on the DATABASE showed that many slope hazards occurred when there was little rainfall and the preceding rainfall had more effect on the slope hazard than the rainfall intensity at the day of hazard. It also showed that the burned area by forest fire was highly susceptible to slope hazard with low rainfall intensity, and the slope hazard in burned area showed highest frequency, especially, under the rainfall below 2-year return period.

Fire is difficult to achieve good performance in image detection using deep learning because of its high irregularity. In particular, there is little data on fire detection in underground utility facilities, which have poor light conditions and many objects similar to fire. These make fire detection challenging and cause low performance of deep learning models. Therefore, this study proposed a fire detection model using deep learning and estimated the performance of the model. The proposed model was designed using a combination of a basic convolutional neural network, Inception block of GoogleNet, and Skip connection of ResNet to optimize the deep learning model for fire detection under underground utility facilities. In addition, a training technique for the model was proposed. To examine the effectiveness of the method, the trained model was applied to fire images, which included fire and non-fire (which can be misunderstood as a fire) objects under the underground facilities or similar conditions, and results were analyzed. Metrics, such as precision and recall from deep learning models of other studies, were compared with those of the proposed model to estimate the model performance qualitatively. The results showed that the proposed model has high precision and recall for fire detection under low light intensity and both low erroneous and missing detection capabilities for things similar to fire.
This study was conducted to investigate the developmental process of plant community during the secondary succession and the dynamics of soil properties in the burned and unburned areas of Mt. Ch’oly-san. Owing to the forest fire occurred on April, 1989, the red pine(Pinus densiflora) forest and its floor vegetation were burned down. The floristic composition of burned and unburned areas were composed of 53 and 49 species of vascular plants, respectively. The dominant species based on SDR4 of the burned sites were lespedeza cyrtobotrya (89.62), Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens (62.50), and Carex humilis (58.73), Quercus serrata (43.33). In contrast, Pinus densiflora (83.56), Lespedeza cyrtobotrya (55.57), Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens (51.88) and Carex humilis (50.41) were dominant in the unburned area. The biological spectra showed the $H-D_1-R_5-e$ type in both the burned and unburned areas. The indices of similarity ($CC_S$) between the two areas were 0.74. Degree of succession (DS) was 604 in the burned area and 802 in the unburned area. From these facts, it is assumed that the succession is rapidly progressing because of the recovery of vegetation. The species diversity ($\={H}$) and evenness index(C) in the burned and unburned areas were 0.15 and 0.18, respectively. Red pine tree did not resprout after scorch by the forest fire, but Lespedeza, Quercus, Rhododendron, Albizzia, and Zanthoxylum resprouted from the roots and trunks after the forest fire. It seems that these species are the fire-resistant species. Soil properties such as soil pH, content of organic matter, available phosphous, total nitrogen, tatal carbon, exchangeable potssium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium increased due to forest fire. These results suggest the intensity of forest fire in the study area was relatively weak. Monthly changes of soil properties were of little significance except for some cases.

In this study, the relations of flow rate, discharging distance and droplet size are measured in accordance with the nozzle shape. The dual type nozzles of LPN142 and LPN148, which have identical core diameter (6.0 mm) and the different radial injection angles (${\theta}_2=142^{\circ}$ and $148^{\circ}$), are manufactured. The distribution diameters with discharging distance are quantified by UL2167 test standard. The relations between discharging angle and droplet sizes, which are measured by the method of Helium-Neon laser equipment, are obtained by the empirical correlation as working pressure increase. Moreover, the extinction coefficient, which is major parameter of the radiative transport equation (RTE) is analyzed with variable droplet sizes. Thus, it is possible to opt the nozzle's shape by analyzing the relations of working pressure, spray distance, droplet size and fire characteristics at minimum allowable flow rate.

Here we present a simple flame detection method for an infrared (IR) thermal camera based real-time fire surveillance digital signal processor (DSP) system. Infrared thermal cameras are especially advantageous for unattended fire surveillance. All-weather monitoring is possible, regardless of illumination and climate conditions, and the data quantity to be processed is one-third that of color videos. Conventional IR camera-based fire detection methods used mainly pixel-based temporal correlation functions. In the temporal correlation function-based methods, temporal changes in pixel intensity generated by the irregular motion and spreading of the flame pixels are measured using correlation functions. The correlation values of non-flame regions are uniform, but the flame regions have irregular temporal correlation values. To satisfy the requirement of early detection, all fire detection techniques should be practically applied within a very short period of time. The conventional pixel-based correlation function is computationally intensive. In this paper, we propose an IR camera-based simple flame detection algorithm optimized with a compact embedded DSP system to achieve early detection. To reduce the computational load, block-based calculations are used to select the candidate flame region and measure the temporal motion of flames. These functions are used together to obtain the early flame detection algorithm. The proposed simple algorithm was tested to verify the required function and performance in real-time using IR test videos and a real-time DSP system. The findings indicated that the system detected the flames within 5 to 20 seconds, and had a correct flame detection ratio of 100% with an acceptable false detection ratio in video sequence level.
The natural convection and combined heat transfer induced by fire in a rectangular enclosure is numerically studied. The model for this numerical analysis is partially opened right wall. The solution procedure includes the standard k-$\varepsilon$ model for turbulent flow and the discrete ordinates method (DOM) is used for the calculation of radiative heat transfer equation. In numerical study, SIMPLE algorithm is applied for fluid flow analysis, and the investigations of combustion gas induced by fire is performed by FAST model of HAZARD I program. In this study, numerical simulation on the combined naturnal convection and radiation is carried out in a partial enclosure filled with absorbed-emitted gray media, but is not considered scattering problem. The streamlines, isothermal lines, average radiation intensity and kinetic energy are compared the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation, the combined heat transfer. Comparing the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation, the combined heat transfer analysis shows the stronger circulation than those of the pure convection. Three different locations of heat source are considered to observe the effect of heat source location on the heat transfer phenomena. As the results, the circulation and the heat transfer in the left region from heating block are much more influenced than those in the right region. It is also founded that the radiation effect cannot be neglected in analyzing the building in fire. And as the results of combustion gas analysis from FAST model, it is found that O2 concentration is decreased according to time. While CO and CO2 concentration are rapidly increased in the beginning(about 100sec), but slowly decreased from that time on.
A burning test was conducted on the smoke and combustion gases generated from cypress wood treated with sodium silicate, 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane sol, 3-(2-aminoethylamino)propylmethyldimethoxysilane sol, and 3-(2-aminoethylamino) propyltrimethoxysilane sol. The silicone compound sol was applied to each of the cypress wood specimens three times with a brush. The smoke and combustion generation gas were analyzed using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1) and the smoke was also evaluated by applying new smoke risk assessment method. The smoke performance index (SPI) of the cypress treated with silicone compound increased 1.66 to 8.42 times and the smoke growth index (SGI) was 11.8 to 88.2%, respectively. The smoke intensity (SI) is expected to be 1.0~50.5% lower than that of the base specimens, resulting in lower smoke and fire hazards. The third maximum carbon monoxide (COpeak) concentration of the specimens treated with silicone compounds was 22.5~33.3% lower than that of the base specimens. On the other hand, it produced potentially fatal toxicity that was 1.48~1.72 times higher than the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) acceptance standard (PEL). Cypress wood itself produced a high carbon monoxide concentration, but the silicon compound played a role in reducing this level.
Wildfires release a large amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere. Fire radiative power (FRP) data obtained from geostationary satellites can play an important role for tracing the GHGs. This paper describes an estimation of the Himawari-8 FRP and fire emissions for Samcheock and Gangnueng wildfire in 6 May 2017. The FRP estimated using Himawari-8 well represented the temporal variability of the fire intensity, which cannot be captured by MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) because of its limited temporal resolution. Fire emissions calculated from the Himwari-8 FRP showed a very similar time-series pattern compared with the AirKorea observations, but 1 to 3 hour's time-lag existed because of the distance between the station and the wildfire location. The estimated emissions were also compared with those of a previous study which analyzed fire damages using high-resolution images. They almost coincided with 12% difference for Samcheock and 2% difference for Gangneung, demonstrating a reliability of the estimation of fire emissions using our Himawari-8 FRP without high-resolution images. This study can be a reference for estimating fire emissions using the current and forthcoming geostationary satellites in East Asia and can contribute to improving accuracy of meteorological products such as AOD (aerosol optical depth).
