  • In this paper, we are studied on the temperature characteristics and fire progress of an incandescent electric lamp at 220V/100W. In the case of stationary state, the ignition possibility of the incandescent electric lamp due to the heat generation was low because the temperature was measured at $161.9^{\circ}C$ the temperature was increased at $538.1^{\circ}C$ in the airtight chamber, but it does not generated the fire because the oxygen was not exist in the airtight chamber. When the lamp is broken, the filament of lamp was melted in the air. The gas of lamp interior spurted to the weakest part by external flame. Thus, the incandescent electric lamp is high possibility of fire when oxygens from airtight space. Also, it is known that the possibility of ignition is very high if combustion materials(sawdust) exists on surrounding. These experimental results will be utilized for the data in the investigation electrical fire cause.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted with the aim of presenting spatial planning directions for evacuation spaces based on an analysis of the performance of horizontal evacuation during the early stages of fire incidents in a geriatric hospital. Methods: Based on a review of previous studies, the research model was designed by establishing occupancy conditions, evacuation, and fire scenarios. The analysis model was developed by considering vulnerable areas in terms of evacuation movement and analyzing the results of evacuation performance. Furthermore, the study analyzed the improvement in evacuation performance by arranging refuge areas. Results: The results of the study are as follows. Firstly, vulnerability spots were identified in terms of evacuation performance by schematizing Required Safe Egress Time, Available Safe Egress Time, and their differences. Secondly, the Required Safe Egress Time in the adjacent public spaces along the escape routes of occupants was found to be higher compared to the Available Safe Egress Time. Thirdly, the results of the correlation analysis between the difference in Available Safe Egress Time and Required Safe Egress Time during the early stages of a fire, as well as their constituent factors, demonstrated that user congestion is a more significant factor in compromising evacuation safety than the physical changes in the fire condition. Fourthly, the analysis of evacuation time was conducted by designating refuge areas where occupants can evacuate within a sufficient timeframe. This led to a decrease in the Required Safe Egress Time. Implications: This study is expected to be used as data on the direction of evacuation space planning to improve the evacuation performance of Geriatric Hospital.

  • Not only in Korea, but also in other countries, most helicopter accidents occur at low altitude. Analysis on accidents data collected both in Korea and other countries has brought two conclusions. Firstly, helicopter operations during the night hours carries a high risk. Secondly, the most common cause of night hour operations is loss of control due to the flight illusion. As an operation relying on a night vision in particular has a very high accident hazard, accompanying instruments such as NVG are ought to be provided. Hence, a thorough preparation and inspection on missions for night forest fire extinguishing should be required and perfect guidelines/road maps and enough training programs for the operation should be provided before the engagement in missions.

  • The time to ignition, heat release rate characteristics and carbon monoxide yield of fiber reinforced and sandwich phenol resin were investigated with cone calorimeter. The fire characteristics of unsaturated polyester, mostly being applied to the existing passenger train, and phenolic resin were compared. Thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA) was used to monitor the degree of thermal decomposition for the phenolic resin. According to the cone calorimeter data, the time to ignition, heat release rate and CO yield was faster and higher as the external heat flux increase. Under the same heat flux, the time to ignition of sandwich type phenolic resin was shorter than that of fiber reinforced. The result of comparison between unsaturated polyester and phenolic resin was that phenolic resin was shown to have better fire resistance than that of unsaturated polyester.

  • A series of sprinkler discharging tests was conducted to measure the droplet size and its distribution of residential fire sprinkler heads. Droplet sizes in sprinkler spray were measured using a laser diffraction method for the flush, circular and pendent type sprinkler head. In this study, the $D_{v,50}$ of the flush type sprinkler heads were ranged between $530{\sim}1040{\mu}m$ and those of circular and pendent type were $988{\mu}m$ and $916{\mu}m$, respectively. The measured cumulative volume distributions were followed by a combination of the log-normal and Rosin-Rammler distribution which is widely used in the computational fire analysis and the parameters of distribution function were obtained from the best fit line through the measured data.

  • A shear connection between the steel beam and concrete slab determines the stability of composite beams. An extensive numerical study to evaluate the resistance of the shear connection in a solid slab at high temperature was conducted. Three-dimensional thermo-mechanical finite element models were developed using a dynamic explicit method and concrete damaged plasticity model. Temperature-dependent plasticity parameters of the concrete model were proposed, and the accuracy of the developed model was obtained against experimental data. This investigation has revealed that a stud shearing failure occurs regardless of temperatures, and its shearing location changes in accordance with a rise in temperature. A new strength reduction formula has been presented to estimate the resistance of the shear connection at high temperatures.

  • In this study, the experimental measurements from a one-way moving experiment showed that the average movement speed was 0.55 m/s with an average crowd density of $2.36P/m^2$ in a corridor. The cCalculation result of the correlations between the crowd density and movement speed from the SFPE Handbook showed an average of 0.53 m/s. The difference between the calculation and experiment was 0.02 m/s. A comparison of each data set showed that the maximum difference was 0.38 m/s. Some experimental results showed that the crowd density increased with increasing movement speed and the average data from the entire experiment time was used for the analysis. When the short time interval for frame by frame analysis for video files was conducted, the experimental data was expected to be more reliable.

  • Since the Northridge earthquake (1994) and Kobe earthquake (1995), the concept of performance-based design has been actively introduced to design major structures and buildings. Recently, the seismic design code was established for fire protection facilities. Therefore, the important fire protection facilities should be designed and constructed according to the seismic design code. Accordingly, uniform hazard spectra (UHS), with annual exceedance probabilities, corresponding to the performance level, such as operational, immediate occupancy, life safety, and collapse prevention, are required for performance-based design. Using the method of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA), the uniform hazard spectra for 5 major cities in Korea with a recurrence period of 500, 1,000, and 2,500 years corresponding to frequencies of (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 5.0, 10.0)Hz and PGA, were analyzed. The expert panel was comprised of 10 members in seismology and tectonics. The ground motion prediction equations and several seismo tectonic models suggested by 10 expert panel members in seismology and tectonics were used as the input data for uniform hazard spectrum analysis. According to sensitivity analysis, the parameter of spectral ground motion prediction equations has a greater impact on the seismic hazard than seismotectonic models. The resulting uniform hazard spectra showed maximum values of the seismic hazard at a frequency of 10Hz and also showed the shape characteristics, which are similar to previous studies and related technical guides for nuclear facilities.
