  • To prevent the ozonosphere from being destroyed by Halon, it is an urgent task to find out Halon replacement. As one of the replacements water mist have showed broad applications by its advantages: little pollution to environment (not destroying the ozone layer or bring green house effect), extinguishing fire quickly, consuming a small quantity of water and having little damage to the protected objects. The methods of generating water mist strongly influence fire suppression effectiveness, which determine the cone angle, drop size distribution, flux uniformity, and momentum of the generating spray. The traditional water mist nozzle included pressure jet nozzles, impingement nozzles and twin-fluid nozzles. All of them have more or less disadvantages for fire suppression. Therefore, many research institutes and corporations are taking up with innovations in mist generation. This article provided some recent studies in State Key Laboratory of Fire Science (SKLFS) of University of Science and Technology of China. SKLFS have investigated new methods of generating water mist (i.e. effervescent atomization and ultrasonic atomization). and self developed a series of nozzles and developed advanced DPIVS (Digital Particle Image Velocimetry and Sizing) technique. Characteristics of water mist (the distribution of droplet sizes, flux density, spray dynamics and cone angle) produced by these nozzles were measured under different conditions (work pressure, nozzle geometry, etc.) using LDV/APV and DPTVS systems. A series of experiments were performed to study the fire suppression effectiveness in different fire scenario (different kindsof the fuel, fire size and ventilation conditions). The fire extinguishing mechanisms of water mist was also discussed.

  • Experiments were performed on 140 ml hexane pool fire extinguishment using a twin-fluid nozzle. For this pool fire, the area of the fire source (round shape of 80 mm in diameter) was $0.005027m^2$ and the measured heat release rate was 2.81 kW. The flow rates of water and gas (air and nitrogen) supplied to the twin-fluid nozzle were 156-483 g/min (~0.156-0.483 l/min) and 30-70 l/min, respectively. In the present experimental ranges, the high gas flow rate conditions led to the successful extinguishing of the pool fire. Under the low gas flow rate conditions in the extinguishment regime, the extinguishment time was long and the estimated water consumption was high. Under high gas flow rate conditions, however, the water flow rate conditions did not appear to have a great impact on the extinguishment time and estimated water consumption. On the other hand, in the present experimental ranges, the types of supply gas did not appear to affect the extinguishable flow rate condition, extinguishment time, and estimated water consumption. Finally, using the present experimental results with previous ones using a single-fluid nozzle, the water consumption of twin-fluid and single-fluid nozzles for extinguishing a 140 ml hexane pool fire were preliminarily compared and discussed.

  • This study analyzed the working conditions of the fire protection system in the Goyang Bus Terminal fire based on the fire investigation results. The results were as follows. First, extinguishing using an indoor fire hydrant was not attempted immediately after the fire burned the ceiling urethane foam. Second, a sprinkler alarm valve was turn off and did not work in the repair work space of the 1st basement. On the other hand, the sprinklers in the $2^{nd}$ basement, $1^{st}$ floor, $2^{nd}$ floor, and $3^{rd}$ floor worked and prevented the fire from moving to stories other than the $1^{st}$ basement. Third, although an exit light worked normally, it was not installed in the exit from the waiting room in the $2^{nd}$ floor to the bus stop. This resulted in many casualties. Fourth, although a fire receiver sent an electrical signal to the fan controller of the smoke control system, it was treated manually in the fan controller and the fan in the $2^{nd}$ floor did not work.

  • Smoke generated in a fire consists of gaseous substances and particulate matter, such as unburned carbon that adsorbed the gases. Human injury caused by inhalation of gaseous substances present in smoke is mostly short-term, whereas damage caused by inhalation of particulate matter is relatively a long-term phenomenon depending on the state of the gas-phase adsorption. The amount and location of the deposited smoke particles are important factors in estimating the damage caused to humans, which are affected by the breathing conditions as well as particle conditions, such as the size and concentration affected by the combustion conditions. In this study, in order to understand the characteristics of the deposition of smoke particles in the respiratory tract related to the study of human smoke inhalation injury, the number and mass concentration of smoke particles deposited in different areas of the respiratory tract for different fuel types, combustion conditions and breathing conditions were calculated. In addition, the amount of mass deposition of smoke in the respiratory tract for a certain period of inhalation was compared with the atmospheric standard of fine dust.

  • There are no International Standards or Criteria pertaining to fires inside tunnels at the moment, but there are some fire-related regulations in some advanced countries such as Germany and the Netherlands where some fire-related studies have been expedited. Germany has established regulations related to the safety of structures by stipulating Fire Curves of RABT and EBA Tunnels. Also, the Netherlands has established the resistance capacity of structures by stipulating RWS curve so that they can prevent the adjacent area from being damaged due to a tunnel collapse. Hydrocarbon Fire Curve is the standard assessing the behaviour of a structure in a serious fire, by increasing the heating speed and the maximum temperature of ISO 834 Curve, while MHC Fire Curve, which was established in France, realizes more serious fire conditions. In this study, we aimed to develop the basis of full-sized experiments, with which you can assess the fire-resisting capacity against the fire strength of concrete PC panel lining, through the realization of various tunnel fire curves as mentioned above, by developing the heating furnace suitable for the requirements of Fire-Resisting Standards, with which you can assess the fire damage of tunnel concrete lining. We have developed various conditions of the heating furnace and the method to install a thermo couple within the furnace based on EFNARC and KS F2257-1. We have also conducted a calibrating experiment in order to secure its reliability.

  • In case of fire, vertically and intensively loaded rack warehouses are faced with a severe status due to the rapid increase in fires. In this regard, there have been trials to prevent fires from spreading by applying fire extinguishing systems, such as ESFR and In-Rack Sprinklers, vertical and horizontal barriers, etc.; however, it is difficult to calculate and design proper fire extinguishing systems caused by various composition conditions, such as the size and loading density of the rack, types of loading commodities, etc. Therefore, in this study, a standard rack was manufactured, incorporating a rack warehouse in Korea by site investigations, surveys, etc. In addition, a full scale fire test was executed to check the fire characteristics depending on the conditions of the ignition points. As a result, the extracted fire spread speed is expected to be utilized as a reference for performance comparisons of the fire extinguishing systems to be developed and applied in the future.

  • Previous research has explored early expression of fire signs before the burning of insulation. To achieve this, typically, automatic inspections are used to detect gas emitted from odor capsules at electrical connection points; additionally, early fire signs can be expressed using visual inspection of changes in the appearance of temperature caps. However, early detection of electrical fire is often difficult because only specific inspections, which are not complex, are performed. Therefore, in this paper, we present complex inspection techniques, such as visual inspection, odor inspection, and automatic inspection, and propose a showing material of fire signs that can solve conventional problems. In addition, this study examines the conditions under which the candidate material for the showing material is designed, the composition of the candidate material selected based on the designed conditions, the manufacturing means used to produce the showing material considering the temperature for early expression of fire signs, and the performance of the produced showing material. Furthermore, we analyze various effects that can occur through the proposed display material.

  • Spent nuclear fuel and long-lived radioactive waste must be carefully handled before disposing them off to a geological repository. After the pre-storage period in water pools, spent nuclear fuel is stored in casks, which are widely used for interim storage. Interim storage in casks is very important part in the whole cycle of nuclear energy generation. This paper presents the results of the numerical study that was performed to evaluate the thermal behavior of a metal-concrete CONSTOR RBMK-1500 cask loaded with spent nuclear fuel and placed in an open type interim storage facility which is under fire conditions (steady-state, fire, post-fire). The modelling was performed using the ANSYS Fluent code. Also, a local sensitivity analysis of thermal parameters on temperature variation was performed. The analysis demonstrated that the maximum increase in the fuel load temperatures is about 10 ℃ and 8 ℃ for 30 min 800 ℃ and 60 min 600 ℃ fires respectively. Therefore, during the fire and the post-fire periods, the fuel load temperatures did not exceed the 300 ℃ limiting temperature set for an RBMK SNF cladding for long-term storage. This ensures that fire accident does not cause overheating of fuel rods in a cask.
