  • We developed a numerical simulator in order to study the Super-RENS/ROM (Super REsolution Near-Field Structure, Read Only Memory) using 3-dimensional FDTD (finite difference time domain) method. The simulation can be performed by three steps. In the first step, we utilized the vector-diffraction theory to calculate the characteristics of incident laser beam from the object-lens to the surface of the disk. At the second step, we fed the calculated result as an input for the main FDTD simulations on the optical layers in the disk structure. After performed the FDTD simulations, we took near-to-far field transformation for the reflected signal, from the surface of the disk to the detector. Finally, we can get reflected signal at the photo-diode. Using this developed simulator, we were able to study about the reading signal from various disk structures as a function of a laser beam position. We calculated reading signals for various pit sizes for Super-ROM structure, and it is found that the simple optical diffraction theory can not explain the reading mechanism of Super-ROM, and more complicated temperature dependent physics must be involved.

  • In this paper, a new algorithm for two-dimensional (2-D) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is presented. By this new method, the maximum time step size can be increased over the Courant-Friedrich-Levy (CFL) condition restraint. This new algorithm is adapted from an Alternating-Direction Implicit FDTD (ADI-FDTD) method. However, unlike the ADI-FDTD algorithm. the alternation is performed with respect to the blocks of fields rather than with respect to each respective coordinate direction. Moreover. this method can be efficiently simulated with parallel computation. and it is more efficient than the conventional FDTD method in terms of CPU time. Numerical formulations are shown and simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed method.

  • In this paper, a number of double-layered microwave integrated circuits (MIC) have been designed and analyzed based on a developed finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) solver. The solver was first validated through comparisons of the computed results with those previously published throughout the literature. Subsequently, various double-layered MIC printed on both isotropic and anisotropic substrates and superstrates, which are frequently encountered in printed circuit boards (PCB), have been designed and analyzed. It was found that in addition to protecting circuits, the added superstrate layer can increase freedoms of design and improve circuit performance, and that the FDTD is indeed a robust and versatile tool for multilayer circuit design.

  • The finite difference time domain method (FDTD) is widely applied to the analysis of various microwave circuits. However, previous source modeling techniques have a lot of constraints and difficulties to apply for general geometries. Therefore, the internal resistive source modeling technique is suggested for efficiently analyzing various types of microwave circuit in this paper. Its efficiency is proved by comparing the computation time with that of hard source modeling. Accuracy is also verified by comparing the scattering parameters with those of previous source modeling methods and measurements for several microwave circuits.

  • We perform a wideband radiated pulse coupling analysis of simple building structures using the finite-deference time-domain(FDTD) method. Toward this purpose, the building structures composed of concrete and window materials are assumed and we numerically model the electrical properties of each material. In this work, we apply a dispersive FDTD algorithm for the electromagnetic analysis of building structures and investigate their shielding effectiveness in the frequency range of 50 MHz to 1 GHz.

  • The proposed print antenna using Finite Difference Time Domain(FDTD) method is analyzed in this paper. A low radiation resistance and an ultra-wide band of this antenna are also presented. The propagation process of the reflected wave and the electric field distribution in the time domain are calculated in respectively. The antenna parameters are optimized for the maximum band width, return loss, input impedance, and radiation pattern in the frequency domain using Fourier transforming. The experimental bandwidth of the antenna is 1.85GHz~6.35GHz for the VSWR less than or equal to 2.0. The measured results are relatively in good agreement with the FDTD results. The proposed antenna can be applied to various applications such as UWB, broadcasting-network system.

  • In this paper, Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method is used to analyze characteristics of the electromagnetically coupled broadband microstrip antenna, and to optimize the antenna parameters. By using short tuning stub in feedline, electromagnetically coupled microstrip antenna shows broadband (approximatcly equal 13%) characteristics, and the characteristics are varied as a function of length, width, and position of the tuning stub. Operating frequency, return loss, VSWR and input impedance are calculated by Fourier transforming the time domain results. Measurement data from fabricated electromagnetically coupled microstrip antenna are compared with FDTD results and are shown to be in good agreement. After optimization of the parameters, maximum bandwidth of about 15% is achieved.

  • Surface impedance boundary condition(SIBC) concepts are introduced into the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method. Lossy conductors are replaced by surface impedance boundary computations reducing the soluton space and producing significant computational savings. Specifically, a surface impedance boundary condition is developed to reduce a lossy dielectric half-space. Since Maxwell's eqations are solved directly, the reflected and transmitted pulse amplitude demonstrate how the reflection and transmision coefficient determine reflected wave amplitude. In this paper, two implementations of reflection coefficient are presented. One implementation is a standard FDTD technique and the other is a FDTD using surface impedence boundary condition(FDTD-SIBC) that are applicabIe over a very large frequency bandwidth. Particulary, an efficient way to transform the time domain results to frequency domain is presented. Thus, frequency domain results are presented in one dimension and are compared with exact results.

  • Delay-sum back projection(DSBP) algorithm and the time reversal algorithm based on the finite-difference time-domain method are compared. The two algorithms, which operate in the time domain, can process the ultra-wideband (UWB) radar data to generate images that are close to the original location and shape of the target. For the experiment, the UWB radar consists of a network analyzer, a resistive V dipole antenna, a scanner, and a control computer. The radar aperture is synthesized by linearly scanning the antenna. A calibration procedure is applied to the measured data to remove signal distortion and clutter. The two algorithms are applied to the same data on the same platform. It is shown that the DSBP algorithm produces better images but takes longer time to produce the images than the FDTD-TR algorithm.

  • The broadband input impedance, the input power and the radiation pattern of the monopole antenna attached to the handy phone operated at 800MHz are calculated by using the Finite Difference Time Domain(FDTD) Method. For the FDTD analysis of frequency characteristics of monopole antenna, the handy phone is modeled with the geometry that the monopole antenna is connected to a conducting box, and the modified FDTD algorithm[11] used the thin wire appproximation method and the Maxwell's integral equation from the original Yee algorithm is applied for the analysis of the wire structure. Also, by means of finding the current distribution directly from circumferencial magnetic filelds around the monopole antenna and the conducting box, the radiation pattern is calculated to observe the influence of the conducting box, and is compared with the results of the known mothod for the FDTD calculation of radiation pattern, For the experiments, the handy phone of which full length including antenna is .lambda. $\lambda$/2 is manufactured and we confirm that all computation results are agree well with the mea- sured values.
