  • Terzaghi's theory of one-dimensional consolidation is restricted in its applicability to relatively thin layers and small incremental loading. Because it is assumed to infinitesimal strain and linear material function. For this reason, Gibson et al established a rigorous formulation for the one-dimensional nonlinear finite strain consolidation theory. There are some difficulties in the application of finite strain consolidation theory. The developed program consisted of several forms and modules. These forms and modules with graphic-user-interfaced format are used in analysis of consolidation practices. For the purpose of verification of developed program. the results of case study and prediction of developed program are compared. The results of comparison is fairly well with prediction and measured data. And with varying finite strain consolidation parameter, g(e) or λ(e), the sensitivity of predicted values were examined.

  • A numerical study was performed to investigate characteristics of one-dimensional consolidation of soft clay. Results of consolidation tests with the remolded normally consolidation clay of having a very high initial void ratio were analyzed by using the numerical technique of finite difference method based on the finite strain consolidation theory, to evaluate consolidational characteristics of soft clay under surcharges on the top of clay. On the other hand, a numerical parametric study on soft clay consolidated due to its self-weight was also carried out to find its effect on one-dimensional consolidation. Terzaghi's conventional consolidation theory, finite strain consolidation theories with linear and non-linear interpolation of effective stress - void ratio - permeability relation were used to analyze the test results and their results were compared to each other to figure out the difference between them. Therefore, the validity of theories was assessed.

Design charts for consolidation settlement of marine clays using finite strain consolidation theory

  • In this study, design charts for estimating consolidation settlement are proposed according to finite strain consolidation theory using a nonlinear constitutive relationship equation. Results of parametric sensitivity analysis shows that the final settlement, initial height, and initial void ratio exerted the greatest effect, and the coefficients of the void ratio-effective-stress. Proposed design charts were analyzed for three regions using a representative constitutive relationship equation that enables major dredged-reclaimed construction sites in Korea. The regional design charts can be calculated accurately for the final settlement because it is applied directly to the numerical analysis results, except for reading errors. A general design chart applicable to all marine clays is proposed through correlation analysis of the main parameters. A final self-weight consolidation settlement with various initial void ratios and initial height conditions should be estimated easily using the general design chart and constitutive relationship. The estimated final settlement using the general design chart is similar to the results of numerical analysis obtained using finite strain consolidation theory. Under an overburden pressure condition, design charts for estimating consolidation settlement are proposed for three regions in Korea.

  • To predict the consolidation behavior of dredged and reclaimed marine clays exhibiting consolidation settlement with large strains, the finite strain consolidation theory must be used. However, challenges in appropriately applying the theory and determining input parameters make design and analysis studies difficult. To address these challenges, design charts for predicting the consolidation settlement of reclaimed marine clays are developed by a numerical approach based on the finite strain consolidation theory. To prepare the design charts, a sensitivity analysis of parameters is performed, and influencing parameters, such as initial void ratio and initial height, as well as the non-linear constitutive void ratio-effective stresspermeability relation, are confirmed. Six representative Korean marine clays obtained from different locations with different liquid limits are used. The design charts for estimating the consolidation times corresponding to various degrees of consolidation are proposed for each of the six representative clays. The consolidation settlements predicted from the design charts are compared to those in previous studies and at an actual construction site and are found to agree well with them. The proposed design charts can therefore be used to solve problems related to the consolidation of reclaimed marine clays having large strains.

  • In the present study, the analytical approaches of vacuum consolidation with horizontal drains were proposed, For dissipating rapidly pore-water in hydraulic fills, vacuum consolidation method applied vacuum pressure in horizontal drains is developed. In the analytical approaches, the governing equation is based on two-dimensional finite strain consolidation theory and the boundary conditions of horizontal drains are considered in applying negative pore-water pressure occurred by vacuum pressure, Also, parametric studies to vacuum pressure and installation pattern of horizontal drains are carried out.

  • 본 연구에서는 유한변형률 이론에 근거하여 3차원 압밀 지배 방정식을 유도하였다. 이 방정식은 비교적 압밀층의 두께가 두꺼운 경우, 비선형 물성치, 공극비에 따른 비선형 투수계수를 갖는 지반에 적합하다. 기존의 유한차분 수치해석 기법(FTCS)은 지배 방정식이 비선형 이며 복잡한 경우 안정된 해를 얻을 수 없기 때문에 본 연구에서는 특수 유한 차분 기법을 도입하였다. 이 수치해석 기법을 지배 방정식에 적용하면 시간에 따른 압밀량을 예측할 수 있다. 본 해석기법에 의해 구해진 값들을 윅드레인을 설치한 여러 가지 고압축성 토질에서의 실험 결과와 비교한 결과, 최종 압밀량과 시간에 따른 압말량이 잘 일치하고 있다.

준설매립토지반의 압밀침하량 예측 (Prediction of Consolidational Settlement of Dredged and Reclaimed Ground)

  • For soils with high void ratios, the inverse method of utilizing results obtained from centrifuge model test was used to find the constitutive relation of effective stress - void ratio - permeability whereas conventional oedometer test and constant rate of strain consolidation test were also used to fine its relation at ranges of relatively low void ratio. Results of column test about settlement of interface and pore pressure and distribution with time were compared with numerically estimated values to confirm such a constitutive relation as obtained from the inverse method. Consolidational settlement in dredged and reclaimed ground, where the consolidation was in progress, was predicted by using the numerical technique implemented with the finite strain consolidation theory.

  • 해성점토를 이용하여 준설매립한 부지의 장기적인 침하거동을 규명하기 위하여 실린더와 대형토조를 이용하여 침강.자중압밀시험을 수행하였으며, 준설매립단지에 자동무선계측시스템을 설치하여 매립부지의 층별침하량과 간극수압의 변화를 계측하였다. 이를 이용하여 준설매립 공정에 따른 매립지층의 침하거동을 분석하고 유한변형률 압밀이론을 이용한 수치해석 결과와 비교하였다. 침하거동 분석결과, 불연속 준설매립공정으로 인하여 매립지층의 분리 현상이 발생하였고 지층별 침하거동이 상이하게 나타났다.

  • Terzaghi의 1차원 압밀이론은 준설 매립지반과 같이 고함수비, 고압축성을 갖는 점토지반의 압밀해석에는 적합하지 않다. 준설 매립지반의 자중압밀과 재하하중에 의한 추가압밀을 적절히 고려하기 위해서는 비선형, 유한변형 압밀이론을 도입해야 한다. 준설 매립지반의 비선형 유한변형 압밀해석을 수행하기 위해서는 침강과정이 종료되고 자중압밀이 시작되는 시점의 간극비인 초기간극비($e_{00}$)와 비선형성을 갖는 준설토의 간극비-유효응력 관계와 간극비-투수계수의 관계 규명이 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 실내시험을 통해 비선형 유한변형 압밀해석에 필요한 인자를 산정하는 방법을 제안하였다. 또한, 본 연구에서 제안한 방법을 적용하여 인천지역 준설토와 카올리나이트의 압밀 물성치를 평가하였고, 이를 동반논문에서 다룰 비선형 유한변형 압밀해석에 적용하였다.
