  • This Paper is to apply the well-established coarse mesh finite difference(CMFD) method to the method of characteristics(MOC) transport calculation as an acceleration scheme. The CMFD problem is first formulated at the pin-cell level with the multi-group structure To solve the cell- based multi-group CMFD problem efficiently, a two-group CMFD formulation is also derived from the multi-group CMFD formulation. The performance of the CMFD acceleration is examined for three test problems with different sizes including a realistic quarter core PWR problem. The CMFD formulation provides a significant reduction in the number of ray tracings and thus only about 9 ray tracing iterations are enough for the realistic problem. In computing time, the CMFD accelerated case is about two or three times faster than the coarse-mesh rebalancing(CMR) accelerated case.

  • Forward modelling of ground penetrating radar (GPR) data is implemented using a new finite element ray tracing technique. The method is different from conventional ray tracing techniques in that the radar cross section of buried targets, the effective area of the receiving antenna, and the attenuation along the raypath are computed. The forward models are used to understand radar signatures measured across various ground structures which are important in detecting engineering hazards at construction sites, void spaces beneath simulated road beds, as well as a learning tool to avoid pitfalls in radargram interpretation. Forward modelling of radar data also can be used in predicting possible structures present at cultural property sites.

  • In this paper, we present an indoor propagation prediction model which is based on a three-dimensional ray-tracing technique. In this model, instead of considering all obstacles such as furnitures and fixtures, etc., only main obstacles to the propagation such as walls, ceiling and floors are modeled as slabs with finite thickness and conductivity, and the significant phenomena of propagation are considered, so we can calculate simply and predict accurately the propagation losses. The propagating rays are considered to be reflected and transmitted specularly at the boundaries of obstacles, and diffracted at edges. The reflection and transmission losses on flat obstacles are calculated by using ray tracing method, and the diffraction losses at edges are calculated by using the uniform theory of diffraction (UTD) for finite conductivity media. The results simulated for some cases by this propagation model good agree with the measured value of pathloss.

  • A IR zoom telescope system was designed for thermal imagery. The magnification is 4-14 and the focal length of eye piece is 25 mm. First, the frame was built up with first order optics and started design with 3rd order optics. There after, we can get the final design by optimization technique through finite ray tracing. The optical system was optimized with ray aberration or angular aberration including higer orders. Finally, The performance of the optical system was accessed by calculating the diffraction MTF from the design data. data.

  • In this study, inhomogeneous amplitude modulation effects on the imaging performance a lens system are expermentally investigated by measuring the diffraction OTF. The lens under the test is a binocular objective made in Korea. Inhomogeneous amplitude modulation is carried out by positioning the modulator cross contacted to the lens under test which is illuminated by collimated light beam. The aberration characteristics of the lens under test are examined by caculating the ray-fan through finite ray tracing. The MTFs of the lens illuminated by the homogeneous and inhomogeneous light beam are measured on the Gaussian image plane and compared with one another.

  • The 2011 Tohoku earthquake triggered extremely destructive tsunami waves which propagated over the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean through Drake Passage and Indian Ocean respectively. A total of 10 tide-gauge records collected from the UNESCO/IOC site were analyzed through a band-pass digital filtering device to examine the observed tsunami characteristics. The ray tracing method and finite-difference model with GEBCO 30 arc second bathymetry were also applied to compare the travel times of the Tohoku-originated tsunami, particularly at Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean and King Edward Point in the Atlantic Ocean with observation-based estimates. At both locations the finite-difference model produced the shortest arrival times, while the ray method produced the longest arrival times. Values of the travel time difference however appear to be within tolerable ranges, considering the propagation distance of the tsunami waves. The observed tsunami at Rodrigues, Mauritius in the west of the Madagascar was found to take a clockwise travel path around Australia and New Zealand, while the observed tsunami at King Edward Point in the southern Atlantic Ocean was found to traverse the Pacific Ocean and then passed into the Atlantic Ocean through the Drake Strait. The formation of icebergs captured by satellite images in Sulzberger in the Antarctica also supports the long-range propagation of the Tohoku-originated tsunami.

  • In fluorescence mode confocal scanning microscope, level of detected signal is very low. In object scanning type confocal scanning microscope, the additional optical system with objective lens and plane mirror was proposed to increase signal intensity, but there was none for beam scanning type confocal scanning microscope. We propose reflecting optical systems which improve signal intensity in beam scanning type confocal scanning microscope. We choose one of the proposed optical systems and design the optical system, i.e., select optical components and assign distances between the selected components. To design the optical system, we use finite ray tracing method and make cost function to be minimized.

  • This paper presents the generalized method of the prediction of the LOS propagating characteristics in an urban microcell by using theray tracing technique. Whereas the received power is calculated by the finite number of pths, 4~10, on an urban steet, the RMS delay spread is comuted by using the sufficient rays of convergence. To take into account the infinite number of paths the technique of the numbering scheme of image antennas was presented by using the rectangular pulse. As to this the existing restriction of the finitte number of paths was relaxed. based on the method of extending the number of paths and the canyon model the received power and RMS delay spread are computed and their differences according to the number of paths are compared at the frequencies of both 1GHz and 2GHz, respectively.
