In this study, a remeshing algorithm adapted to the mesh density map using the Delaunay mesh generation method is developed. In the finite element simulation of forging process, the numerical error increases as the process goes on because of discrete property of the finite elements and distortion of elements. Especially, in the region where stresses and strains are concentrated, the numerical error will be highly increased. However, it is not desirable to use a uniformly fine mesh in the whole domain. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the analysis error by constructing locally refined mesh at the region where the error is concentrated such as at the die corner. In this paper, the point insertion algorithm is used and the mesh size is controlled by using a mesh density map constructed with a posteriori error estimation. An optimized smoothing technique is adopted to have smooth distribution of the mesh and improve the mesh element quality.

This paper presents a coupling scheme, which couples an analytical solution and the standard finite element, for analyzing the electromagnetic fields. The former is a solution of the magnetic field in free space, i.e., the outer region of boundary, and the latter represents the system with source currents and magnetic materials in the inner region of boundary. The proposed method retains the sparsity and symmetry of the final system matrix, the merits of the standard FEM. To verify the usefulness of the proposed algorithm, an example which can be solved analytically is chosen and analyzed. The results are compared with those of the standard FEM and the analytic solutions.

The ring rolling process involves three-dimensional non-steady material flow and continuous change of radius and thickness of the ring workpiece. In this study, the deformation analysis and geometric updating algorithm of the ring rolling process were verified by using the three-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element method. Manufacturing processes for plain ring and T-shaped ring were investigated by comparing experiments with simulation results, especially in side spread, load-stroke and pressure distribution, showing a good agreement. It was concluded that the simulation method would be a useful tool for the design of a ring rolling process.
An integral equation representation of cracks was presented, which differs from well-known "dislocation layer" representation. In this new representation, an integral equation representation of cracks was developed and coupled to the direct boundary-element method for treatment of cracks in plane finite bodies. The method was developed for in-plane (modes I and II) loadings only. In this paper, the method is formulated and applied to mode III problems involving smooth or kinked cracks in finite region. The results are compared to exact solutions where available and the method is shown to be very accurate despite of its simplicity.implicity.

The objective of this study is to consider the induction heating process and to develop the finite element program to analyze the behaviour of semi-solid materials. The semi-solid material is assumed to be composed of solid region as rigid visco-plastic model and liquid region following Darcy's law. Induction heating process is analyzed using finite element software, ANSYS, and also the behaviour of a semi-solid material considering induction heating is analyzed using developed finite element program.

This paper presents a 3D shape optimization algorithm for electromagnetic devices using the design sensitivity analysis with finite element method. The structural deformation analysis based on the deformation theory of the elastic body under stress is used for mesh renewing. The design sensitivity and adjoint variable formulae are derived for the 3D finite element method with edge element. The results of sensitivity analysis are used as the input data of the structural analysis to calculate the relocation of the nodal points. This method makes it possible that the new mesh of analysis region can be obtained from the initial mesh without regeneration. The proposed algorithm is applied to the shape optimization of 3D electromagnet pole to net a uniform flux density at the target region.
Abnormal grain growth in alumina was investigated during sinter-HIP process for better understanding of pressure effect on microstructural development. Abnormal grain growth of monolithic alumina was observed near surface region rather than interior region of specimen. Finite element analysis was used to estimate the pressure distribution developed in the specimen. Pressure distribution analysis was in good agreement with grain size distributjion in the specimen. The results of finite element analysis provided that abnormal grain growth monolithic alumina was resulted from the inhomogeneous pressure distribution in the specimen. MgO addition in alumina was effective for the suppression of abnormal grain growth in alumina under inhomogeneous pressure distribution during sinter-HIP process.
The stress concentration phenomena due to the structural incontinuty are studied by finite element method. In this study, a circular cylinder is treated. Under the axial load, the membrance action is dominate and the 24 D.O.F. cylindrical membrane finite element is used. The assembly of this element can successfully represent the original structure geometrically. The internal displacement function is such organized that the inter element compatibility condition is fully satisfied. In this study, the stress concentration factors due to the presence of a hole on the cylinder wall are obtained, and the factors versus the location of the hole is computed and plotted. It is found that the hole effect on the stress concentration disappears beyond the neighboring region of the hole size form the edge of the hole. Those results are useful for practical design in determining the region where the re-inforcing is necessary.

SEA is a useful tool to predict noise and vibration response in high frequency region but has a weak point not to be able to express modal behavior in low frequency region. For a structure with middle subsystem having relatively higher modal density than excited subsystem and receiving subsystem, we studied the possibility that the modal behavior of receiving subsystem can express by considering finite mobility of excited subsystem. For a simply three-coupled beams which is chosen for feasibility study, the response of receiving beam was investigated with varying the length & area moment of inertia of middle beam. In case that the middle beam has relatively higher modal density than exciting beam, the application to finite mobility of excited beam led to express modal behavior of receiving beam relatively well.

PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate various core designs on stress distribution within zirconia crowns. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three-dimensional finite element models, representing mandibular molars, comprising a prepared tooth, cement layer, zirconia core, and veneer porcelain were designed by computer software. The shoulder (1 mm in width) variations in core were incremental increases of 1 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm in proximal and lingual height, and buccal height respectively. To simulate masticatory force, loads of 280 N were applied from three directions (vertical, at a $45^{\circ}$ angle, and horizontal). To simulate maximum bite force, a load of 700 N was applied vertically to the crowns. Maximum principal stress (MPS) was determined for each model, loading condition, and position. RESULTS. In the maximum bite force simulation test, the MPSs on all crowns observed around the shoulder region and loading points. The compressive stresses were located in the shoulder region of the veneer-zirconia interface and at the occlusal region. In the test simulating masticatory force, the MPS was concentrated around the loading points, and the compressive stresses were located at the 3 mm height lingual shoulder region, when the load was applied horizontally. MPS increased in the shoulder region as the shoulder height increased. CONCLUSION. This study suggested that reinforced shoulder play an essential role in the success of the zirconia restoration, and veneer fracture due to occlusal loading can be prevented by proper core design, such as shoulder.
