Data which gathered and used in the field of fatigue and fracture mechanics have a lot of uncertainties. In this case, those uncertainties will make scatter band in evaluation of fatigue life and fracture toughness. Thus, the probabilistic analysis of these data will be needed. For determining the fatigue life in mixed mode, using crack direction law and fatigue crack growth law, the problem is studied as a constrained life minimization. Stress intensity factor(SIF) is computed by approximate solution table(Ewalds/Wanhill 1984) and 0th order PFEM. The variance of fatigue life and SIF are computed by differentiation of tabulated approximate solution and 1st order PFEM. And these are used for criterion of design values, principal parameter determination and modelling. The problem of center cracked plate is solved for checking the PFEM model which is influenced by various parameters like as initial crack length, final crack length, two fatigue parameters in Paris Equation and applied stress.
This paper presents three-dimensional finite element method analyses of the distribution of equivalents stress of Von Mises. Induced around a cavity located in the bone cement polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). The presences and effect of its position in the cement was demonstrated, thus on the stress level and distribution. The porosity interaction depending on their positions, and their orientations on the interdistances their mechanical behaviour of bone cement effects were analysed. The obtained results show that micro-porosity located in the proximal and distal zone of the prosthesis is subject to higher stress field. We show that the breaking strain of the cement is largely taken when the cement, containing the porosities very close adjacent to each other.
Effects of temperature dependent material properties on mixed mode fracture parameters of functionally graded materials subjected to thermal loading are investigated. A domain form of the $J_k$-integral method including temperature-dependent material properties and its numerical implementation using finite element analysis is presented. Temperature and displacement fields are calculated using finite element analysis and are used to compute mixed mode stress intensity factors using the $J_k$-integral. Numerical results indicate that temperature-dependency of material properties has considerable effect on the mixed-mode stress intensity factors of cracked functionally graded structures.
The study investigated effects of residual stresses and Charpy impact energy on brittle fractures of the butt weld between the valve and the piping, and of the valve body in nuclear power plants via a linear elastic fracture mechanics approach in the ASME B&PV Code, Sec.XI and finite element analysis. Weld residual stress in a butt weld between close check valve and piping, and residual stress in the valve due to casting process were assumed to be proportional to yield strength of base metal. Operating stresses in the butt weld and the valve body were calculated using approximate engineering formulae and finite element analysis, respectively. Applied stress intensity factors were calculated by assuming postulated cracks with specific sizes and then by substituting the residual stresses and the operating stresses into engineering formulae presented in the ASME B&PV Code, Sec.III. Plane strain fracture toughness was derived by using a correlation between Charpy V-notch impact energy and fracture toughness. Structural integrity of the weld and the body against brittle fracture was assessed by using the applied stress intensity factors, plane strain fracture toughness and the linear elastic fracture mechanics approach. As a result, it was identified that the structural integrity was maintained with decreasing the residual stress levels and increasing the Charpy V-notch impact energy.
The shape and size of the plastic zone around the crack tip are analyzed under pure mode I, pure mode II and mixed mode (I+II) loading for small scale yielding and for both plane stress and plane strain conditions. A new analytical formulation is presented to determine the radius of the plastic zone in a non-dimensional form. In particular, the effect of T-stress on the plastic zone around the crack tip is studied. The results of this investigation indicate that the stress field with a T-stress always yields a larger plastic zone than the field without a T-stress. It is found that under predominantly mode I loading, the effect of a negative T-stress on the size of the plastic zone is more dramatic than a positive T-stress. However, when mode II portion of loading is dominating the effect of both positive and negative T-stresses on the size of the plastic zone is almost equal. For validating the analytical results, several finite element analyses were performed. It is shown that the results obtained by the proposed analytical formulation are in very good agreements with those obtained from the finite element analyses.
The relationship between structural geometry and number of life cycles to failure is investigated to improve the fatigue life of structural components. The linear elastic fracture mechanics(LEFM) approach is integrated with shape optimal design methodology. The primary objective of this study is to decide an optimal shape for enhancing the life of the structure. The results from LEFM analyses are used in the fatigue model to predict the life of the structure before failure is occurred. The shape of the structure is optimized by using the growth strain method. Relevant issues such as problem formulation, finite element modeling are explained. Three design examples are solved, and the results show that, with proper shape changes, the life of structural systems subjected to fatigue loads can be enhanced significantly.

The numerical simulations on the influence of mesoscopic structures on the macroscopic strength and fracture characteristics are carried out based on that the concrete is assumed to be a three-phase composite composed of matrix (mortar), aggregate and bond between them by using a numerical code named MFPA. The finite element program is employed as the basic stress analysis tool when the elastic damage mechanics is used to describe the constitutive law of meso-level element and the maximum tensile strain criterion and Mohr-Coulomb criterion are utilized as damage threshold. It can be found from the numerical results that the bond between matrix and aggregate has a significant effect on the macroscopic mechanical performance of concrete.
Dynamic fracture characteristics of Polycarbonate WL-RDCB specimen were investigated. The dynamic crack propagation velocities in these specimens were measured by using both high speed camera system and silver paint grid method developed and justified in the INHA Fracture Mechanics Laboratory. The measured crack propagation velocities were fed into the INSAMCR code(a dynamic finite element code which has been developed in the INBA Fracture Mechanics Laboratory) to extract the dynamic stress intensity factors. It has been confirmed that both dynamic crack arrest toughness and the static crack arrest toughness depend on both the geometry and the dynamic crack propagation velocity of specimens. The maximum dynamic crack propagation velocity of Polycarbonate WL-RDCB specimen was found to be dependent on the material property, geometry and the type of loading. The dynamic cracks in these Polycarbonate WL-RDCB specimens seemed to propagate in a successive manner, involving distinguished 'propagation-arrest-propagation-arrest' steps on the microsecond time scale. It was also found that the relat-ionship between dynamic stress intensity factor and dynamic crack propagation velocities might be represented by the typical '$\Gamma$'shape.
In this paper, the fracture characteristics of concrete specimens with different notch depths under three-point flexural loads are studied by finite element and fracture mechanics methods. Firstly, the concrete beams (the size is 700×100×150 mm) with different notch depths (a=30 mm, 45 mm, 60 mm and 75 mm respectively) are tested to study the influence of notch depths on the mechanical properties of concrete. Subsequently, the concrete beams with notch depth of 60 mm are loaded at different loading rates to study the influence of loading rates on the fracture characteristics, and digital image correlation (DIC) is used to monitor the strain nephogram at different loading rates. The test results show that the flexural characteristics of the beams are influenced by notch depths, and the bearing capacity and ductility of the concrete decrease with the increase of notch depths. Moreover, the peak load of concrete beam gradually increases with the increase of loading rate. Then, the fracture energy of the beams is accurately calculated by tail-modeling method and the bilinear softening constitutive model of fracture behavior is determined by using the modified fracture energy. Finally, the bilinear softening constitutive function is embedded into the finite element (FE) model for numerical simulation. Through the comparison of the test results and finite element analysis, the bilinear softening model determined by the tail-modeling method can be used to predict the fracture behavior of concrete beams under different notch depths and loading rates.
