Three noded plate and shell finite element and 3D beam element in conjunction with Lanczos method are used for studying the effect of boat tail angle on the free vibration characteristics of a typical payload fairing for three different cylinder diameters with height to diameter ratio 1.5. Configurations without boat tail structural member are also studied. One half of the one side fairing structure is considered for the analysis and symmetric boundary conditions are used.
This paper presents seismic analysis of concrete gravity dams considering soil-structure-fluid interaction. Displacement based plane strain finite element formulation is considered for the dam and foundation domain whereas pressure based finite element formulation is considered for the reservoir domain. A direct coupling method has been adopted to obtain the interaction effects among the dam, foundation and reservoir domain to obtain the dynamic responses of the dam. An efficient absorbing boundary condition has been implemented at the truncation surfaces of the foundation and reservoir domains. A parametric study has been carried out considering each domain separately and collectively based on natural frequencies, crest displacement and stress at the neck level of the dam body. The combined frequency of the entire coupled system is very less than that of the each individual sub-system. The crest displacement and neck level stresses of the dam shows prominent enhancement when coupling effect is taken into consideration. These outcomes suggest that a complete coupled analysis is necessary to obtain the actual responses of the concrete gravity dam. The developed methodology can easily be implemented in finite element code for analyzing the coupled problem to obtain the desired responses of the individual subdomains.

The goal of this study is to analytically and non-stochastically generate structural uncertainty behaviors of isotropic beams and laminated composite plates under plane stress conditions by using an interval finite element method. Uncertainty parameters of structural properties considering resistance and load effect are formulated by interval arithmetic and then linked to the finite element method. Under plane stress state, the isotropic cantilever beam is modeled and the laminated composite plate is cross-ply lay-up [0/90]. Triangular shape with a clamped-free boundary condition is given as geometry. Through uncertainties of both Young's modulus for resistance and applied forces for load effect, the change of structural maximum deflection and maximum von-Mises stress are analyzed. Numerical applications verify the effective generation of structural behavior uncertainties through the non-stochastic approach using interval arithmetic and immediately the feasibility of the present method.
Membrane structures are quite sensitive to wind and therefore the fluid-solid interaction can not be neglected in dynamic analysis. A boundary element method (BEM) for 3D simulation of wind-structure interaction in tensile membrane structures is presented in this paper. The flow is treated as incompressible and potential. The flow field is solved with boundary element method codes and structural simulation is performed by finite element method software ANSYS. The nonlinear equations system is solved iteratively, with segregated treatment of the fluid and structure equations. Furthermore this method has been demonstrated to be effective by typical examples. Besides, the influence of several parameters on the wind-structure interaction, such as rise-span ratio, prestress and the wind velocity are investigated according to this method. The results provide experience in wind resistant researches and engineering.

In this paper. boundary element method is applied to the analysis of nonlinear free surface wave. A particular concern is given to the treatment of the open boundaries at the in-flow boundary and out-flow boundary, which uses the mass-flux and energy-flux considering the continuity of fluid. By assuming the fluid to be inviscid and incompressible and the flow to be irrotational. the problem is formulated mathematically as a two-dimentional nonlinear problem in terms of a velocity potential. The equation(Laplace equation) and the boundary conditions are transformed into two boundary integral equations. Due to the nonlinearity of the problem. the incremental method is used for the numerical analysis. Numerical results obtained by the present boundary element method are compared with those obtained by the finite element method and also with experimental values.

This paper presents a method to analyze the unbalance response of a high speed polygon mirror scanner motor supported by sintered bearing and flexible supporting structures by using the finite element method and the mode superposition method. The appropriate finite element equations for polygon mirror are described by rotating annular sector element using Kirchhoff plate theory and von Karman non-linear strain, and its rigid body motion is also considered. The rotating components except for the polygon mirror are modeled by Timoshenko beam element including the gyroscopic effect. The flexible supporting structures are modeled by using a 4-node tetrahedron element and 4-node shell element with rotational degrees of freedom. Finite element equations of each component of the polygon mirror scanner motor and the flexible supporting structures are consistently derived by satisfying the geometric compatibility in the internal boundary between each component. The rigid link constraints are also imposed at the interface area between sleeve and sintered bearing to describe the physical motion at this interface. A global matrix equation obtained by assembling the finite element equations of each substructure is transformed to a state-space matrix-vector equation, and both damped natural frequencies and modal damping ratios are calculated by solving the associated eigenvalue problem by using the restarted Arnoldi iteration method. Unbalance responses in time and frequency domain are performed by superposing the eigenvalues and eigenvectors from the free vibration analysis. The validity of the proposed method is verified by comparing the simulated unbalance response with the experimental results. This research also shows that the flexibility of supporting structures plays an important role in determining the unbalance response of the polygon mirror scanner motor.
In this paper, a meshfree-enriched finite element method (ME-FEM) is introduced for the large deformation analysis of nonlinear path-dependent problems involving contact. In linear ME-FEM, the element formulation is established by introducing a meshfree convex approximation into the linear triangular element in 2D and linear tetrahedron element in 3D along with an enriched meshfree node. In nonlinear formulation, the area-weighted smoothing scheme for deformation gradient is then developed in conjunction with the meshfree-enriched element interpolation functions to yield a discrete divergence-free property at the integration points, which is essential to enhance the stress calculation in the stage of plastic deformation. A modified variational formulation using the smoothed deformation gradient is developed for path-dependent material analysis. In the industrial metal forming problems, the mortar contact algorithm is implemented in the explicit formulation. Since the meshfree-enriched element shape functions are constructed using the meshfree convex approximation, they pose the desired Kronecker-delta property at the element edge thus requires no special treatments in the enforcement of essential boundary condition as well as the contact conditions. As a result, this approach can be easily incorporated into a conventional displacement-based finite element code. Two elasto-plastic problems are studied and the numerical results indicated that ME-FEM is capable of delivering a volumetric locking-free and pressure oscillation-free solutions for the large deformation problems in metal forming analysis.
It is important to model the mechanical structure precisely and reasonably in predicting the dynamic characteristics, controlling the vibration, and designing the structure dynamics. In the finite element modeling, the errors can be contained from the physical parameters, the approximation of the boundary conditions, and the element modeling. From the dynamic test, more precise dynamic characteristics can be obtained. Model updating using parameter modification is appropriate when the design parameter is used to analyze the input parameter like finite element method. Finite element analysis for cantilever and simply supported beams with uniform area and shape change are carried out as model updating examples. Mass and stiffness matrices are updated by comparing test and analytical modal frequencies. The result shows that the updated frequencies become closer to the test frequencies.

A dynamic analysis of a horseshoe_shaped tunnel near to cavity was performed to study the effect of the cavity on the dynamic behavior of the tunnel. In order to obtain the dynamic response of the tunnel embedded in a semi-infinite domain, a hybrid numerical technique was primarily developed. A dynamic fundamental solution in frequency domain for multi-layered half planes was derived and subsequently incorporated in the boundary element method. Coupling of the boundary element method for the far field with the finite element method for the near field is made by imposing compatibility condition of a displacement at the interface. The boundary element method is then coupled with the finite element method, which is utilized to model the near field including the tunnel and the cavity. In order to demonstrate the validity of the proposed technique, dynamic responses of single and multiply-layered semi-infinite structural systems are obtained by using the Kicker waveform and investigated in the limestone layer to find how the being and the location of the cavity affect the dynamic characteristics of the system.
