  • This study is to evaluate the tool performance in honing using diamond reamer and present grounds whether the localized products are sufficiently competitive comparing with the existing imported ones. The heads of the tool performance evaluation are roundness, roughness, tool life of the workpiece and so on. When evaluating the tool performance, cutting process is divided by three areas which are rough semi-finish and finish cut. cloning improves the accuracy such as boring and reaming after manufacturing the inside diameter, and finishing directly by honing is a recent trend. This honing is used greatly In hard cutting materials like cemented carbides and it is the CBN and diamond that is used in hard cutting materials. Both of them are expensive and most oi them are imported.

Evaluation of Characteristics of CBN Honing Stone for Cylinder Liner Honing of Marine Diesel Engine

  • The cylinder liner of a low speed engine is one of the most important parts of the marine diesel engines used in merchant ships. However, a sufficient degree of precision in the manufacturing method for these cylinder liners has never existed. Conventional honing stones have always been used for machining large marine cylinder liners. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a honing process that optimizes the honing characteristics. In this study, a CBN honing stone was manufactured to improve the honing performance for a cylinder liner and shorten the processing time, and machining experiments on a practical cylinder liner were carried out. Then, a comparison was made between the CBN honing and honing with a conventional GC stone using parameters such as the honing time, machining quantity, and honing cost. As a result, for a #60 CBN stone, the machining amount was significantly improved compared to the conventional one by about $1.1{\mu}m$/min, and in respect to the machining cost, a reduction of about 57% was achieved. However, an improvement in the process with a #800 CBN stone could not be expected because it did not show a significant difference compared to the case of the existing stone. From the above results, if the liner were honed using a CBN honing stone, the rough machining and intermediate processing during an early stage of the honing process were excellent compared to the conventional one. However, we could not find a significant difference in the case of finish honing.

  • Honing, lapping, polishing and superfinishing are applied for a precision machining to finish the metal surface, but these precision machining are micro-cutting by hard and micro-abrasive grains. Frictional machining is the new method to finish mirrorlike surface without using those abrasive grains. The frictional machining produces high pressure and high temperature instantly by compressing a tool material against the metal surface in sliding motion. The metal surface is given plastic deformation and plastic flow by the above mentioned frictional motion, but the surface roughness of the metal surface is influenced by physical and chemical reaction in surrounding atmosphere. Therefore, the atmosphere around the metal optimum atmosphere in the frictional machining. The part 1 of the study was performed in liquid atmospheres. Diesel oil, lubricant, grease, lard oil, bean oil and cutting fluid were used as such atmospheres. Medium carbon steel SM 50 C was used as a workpiece and ceramic tip was applied as a frictional tool. The result of the experiment showed characteristic machining conditions to generate the best surface roughness in each atmospheres.

A study on the surface accuracy according to applied load in burnishing of steel

  • Burnishing, as a micro plastic working, is a finishing process used in conjuction with or in replacement of reaming, honing, lapping, and/or grinding. The tool which is a smooth, round steel ball slightly larger than the bore is pushed through pre-machined hole, leaving a closely controlled finish. The major application of the processes is to improve the geometric and mechanical properties of surface such as (1) dimensional accuracy, (2) surface roughness, (3) bearing ratio, (4) surface hardness, (5) wear resistance, (6) fatigue and corrosion resistance, etc. Therefore, this study carried out some experiments to illustrate the theoretical formula and to investigate surface accuracy (e.g. variation of diameter, surface roughness, bearing ratio) in accordance with the applied burnishing load.
