Fingerprint recognition is a task to find a matching pattern in a database for a specific persons fingerprint. To accomplish this task, preprocessing, classification, and matching steps are taken for a large-scale fingerprint database but only the matching step is taken without classification for a small-scale database. The primary matching method is based on minutiae (ridge ending point, bifurcation). This matching method, however, requires a very complex computation to extract minutiae and match minutiae-to-minutiae accurately due to translation, rotation, nonlinear deformation of fingerprint and occurrence of spurious minutiae. In addition, this method requires a laborious preprocessing step in order to improve the quality of fingerprint Images. This paper proposes a new simple method to eliminate these problems. With this method, Gabor variance is used instead of minutiae for fingerprint recognition. The Gabor variance is computed from Gabor features that result from filtering a fingerprint image through Gabor filter. In this paper, this method is described and its test result is shown, demonstrating the potential of using this new method for fingerprint recognition.

Fingerprint sample quality is one of major factors influencing the matching performance of fingerprint recognition systems. The error rates of fingerprint recognition systems can be decreased significantly by removing poor quality fingerprints. The purpose of this paper is to assess the effectiveness of individual sample quality measures on the performance of minutiae-based fingerprint recognition algorithms. Initially, the authors examined the various factors that influenced the matching performance of the minutiae-based fingerprint recognition algorithms. Then, the existing measures for fingerprint sample quality were studied and the more effective quality measures were selected and compared with two image quality software packages, (NFIQ from NIST, and QualityCheck from Aware Inc.) in terms of matching performance of a commercial fingerprint matcher (Verifinger 5.0 from Neurotechnologija). The experimental results over various Fingerprint Verification Competition (FVC) datasets show that even a single sample quality measure can enhance the matching performance effectively.
We proposes a new fingerprint minutia matching algorithm which matches the fingerprint minutiae by using local alignment. In general, fingerprint is deformed by Pressure and orientation when a user presses his fingerprint to the sensor. These nonlinear deformations change the position and the orientation of minutiae which decrease reliability of minutiae. Matching by using global alignment uses one alignment point. But, the problem with this method is that, due to the deformation, matching reliability of a minutia decreases as the distance from the alignment minutia increases. Matching by using local alignment overcomes this problem by considering minutiae which are located in a short distance boundary. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is superior to that of using global alignment.

Fingerprint Recognition System is made up of Off-line treatment and On-line treatment; the one is registering all the information of there trieving features which are retrieved in the digitalized fingerprint getting out of the analog fingerprint through the fingerprint acquisition device and the other is the treatment making the decision whether the users are approved to be accessed to the system or not with matching them with the fingerprint features which are retrieved and database from the input fingerprint when the users are approaching the system to use. In matching between On-line and Off-line treatment, the most important thing is which features we are going to use as the standard. Therefore, we have been using "Delta" and "Core" as this standard until now, but there might have been some deficits not to exist in every person when we set them up as the standards. In order to handle the users who do not have those features, we are still using the matching method which enables us to make up of the spanning tree or the triangulation with the relations of the spanned feature. However, there are some overheads of the time on these methods and it is not sure whether they make the correct matching or not. In this paper, introduces a new data structure, called Union and Division, representing binary fingerprint image. Minutiae detecting procedure using Union and Division takes, on the average, 32% of the consuming time taken by a minutiae detecting procedure without using Union and Division.

A fingerprint verification system based on a set of invariant moment features and a nonlinear Back Propagation Neural Network(BPNN) verifier is proposed. An image-based method with invariant moment features for fingerprint verification is used to overcome the demerits of traditional minutiae-based methods and other image-based methods. The proposed system contains two stages: an off-line stage for template processing and an on-line stage for testing with input fingerprints. The system preprocesses fingerprints and reliably detects a unique reference point to determine a Region-of-Interest(ROI). A total of four sets of seven invariant moment features are extracted from four partitioned sub-images of an ROI. Matching between the feature vectors of a test fingerprint and those of a template fingerprint in the database is evaluated by a nonlinear BPNN and its performance is compared with other methods in terms of absolute distance as a similarity measure. The experimental results show that the proposed method with BPNN matching has a higher matching accuracy, while the method with absolute distance has a faster matching speed. Comparison results with other famous methods also show that the proposed method outperforms them in verification accuracy.

This paper presents the fuzzy minutiae-based matching to improve the accuracy of the difference between template and imput fingerprint image. Minutiae-based matching method is the most well-known and widely used method for fingerprint matching. However, fingerprint pressure, dryness of the skin, skin disease, sweat, dirt, grease, and humidity in the air cause the noisy fingerprint images and the distortion is produced by users moving their fingers on the scanner surface. The input image may be rejected from the Fingerprint Recognition System, because the distorted fingerprint image is very different from the original image. Large tolerence boxes and fuzzy discriminant function is required to improve the accuracy.
Fingerprint recognition is concerned with fingerprint acquisition and matching. Our research was focused on a fingerprint matching method using an inkless fingerprint input sensor at the fingerprint acquisition step. Since an inkless fingerprint sensor produces a digital-image-processed fingerprint image, we did not consider noise that can happen while acquiring the fingerprint. And making the user attempt fingerprint input as random, we considered image distortion that translation and rotation are included as complex. NJTC algorithm is used for fingerprint identification and verification. The method to find the center of the fingerprint is added in the NJTC algorithm to supplement discrimination of fingerprint recognition. From this center point, we decided the optimum cropping size for effective matching with pixels and demonstrated that the proposed method has high discrimination and high efficiency.
Jain et al. proposed the hybrid matching method which was combined the minutia-based matching method and the filter-bank based matching method. And, their experimental results proved the hybrid matching method was more effective than each of them. However, this hybrid method cannot utilize each peculiar advantage of two methods. The reason is that it gets the matching score by simply summing up each weighted matching score after executing two methods individually. In this paper, we propose new hybrid matching method. It mixes two matching methods during the feature extraction process. This new hybrid method has lower ERR than the filter-bank based method and higher ERR than the minutia-based method. So, we propose the adaptive hybrid scoring method, which selects the matching score in order to preserve the characteristics of two matching methods. Using this method, we can get lower ERR than the hybrid matcher by Jain et al. Experimental results indicate that the proposed methods can improve the matching performance up to about 1% in ERR.

This paper presents two adaptive fingerprint matching methods. First, we experiment an adaptive threshold selection of 1:N matching system in order to raise the reliability of the matching score. Second, we propose a adaptive threshold selection using fitting algorithm for high speed matching. The experiment was conducted on the NITZEN database, which has 5247 samples. Consequently, this paper shows that our suggested method can perform 1.88 times faster matching speed than the bidirectional matching speed. And, we prove that FRR of our suggested method decreases 1.43 % than that of the unidirectional matching.
