The fine aggregates of below 2 mm size was fabricated using by the vertical furnace in which the aggregates could be sintered at floating state and its physical properties were analyzed. The liquid formed at the surface of specimens sintered at $1200{\sim}l300^{\circ}C$ induced a gas in core to expand so the denser shell and porous core could be produced. The C series specimen fabricated by crushing an extruded body had an irregular shape and sharp edges but those became spheroidized by bloating due to gas expansion inside. The fine aggregates fabricated in this study was as light as floating in the water and had an apparent density of $0.68{\sim}1.08$. The absorption rate was proportioned to a porosity showing that the pores in core was not closed completely. The properties of fine aggregates fabricated in vertical furnace were similar with those of in an electric muffle furnace but the sticking-together phenomenon by surface fusion was not occurred in the vertical furnace. The aggregates fabricated in this study had a little lower impact resistance than that of natural aggregate but satisfied the unit volume weight standard specified in KS.
With the rapid growth in construction sector, it becomes all the more important to assess the amount of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste being generated and analyze the practices needed to handle and use this waste before final disposal. This serves waste management and disposal issues, paving way to waste utilization in construction industry from the sustainability point of view. C&D waste constitutes a major bulk of total solid waste produced in the world. In this work, an attempt is made to study the performance of concrete using water soaked Recycled Coarse Aggregates (RCA) in replacement levels of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% to Natural Coarse Aggregates (NCA). Experiments were designed and conducted to study the performance of RCA based concrete. Further suitable performance enhancement techniques to RCA based concrete were attempted, to achieve compressive strength at least equal to or more than that for no RCA based concrete (control concrete). Performance enhancement study is reported here for 50% and 100% RCA based concretes. All four techniques attempted have given favorable results encouraging use of RCA based concretes with full replacement levels, to adopt RCA based concrete in structural applications, without any kind of concern to the stake holder. Further attempts have also been made to use Recycled Fine Aggregates (RFA) with appropriate modifications to serve as fine aggregates in mortar and concrete. Using RFA blended with river sand fractions as well as RFA with Iron Ore Tailings (IOT) fractions, have given good results to serve as fine aggregates to the extent of 100% replacement levels in mortars and concretes.

An extensive numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the slope stability of the wasted mine tailing landfill constructed by the utilization of fine recycled-concrete aggregates. To do this, first, the physical and mechanical properties of the fine recycled-concrete aggregates and the wasted mine tailing are investigated, and the settlement and the change of material properly of the fine recycled-concrete aggregates resulted from reaction with water are also examined. The $OH^-$ elution from the fine recycled-concrete aggregates reacted with water slightly causes the change of material properties such as porosity, permeability and waster absorption, but the settlement does not happen noticeably. The results of numerical analysis of the landfill slope built with wasted mine tailing and recycled-concrete aggregates in alternate layer indicate that slope stability increases with decreasing the slope ratio, with decreasing the groundwater level inside slope, and with increasing the depth of fine recycled-concrete aggregate layer. Based on this study, thus, engineers working in related to the wasted mine tailing landfill design and construction using the fine recycled-concrete aggregates should be considered the slope ratio, the groundwater level, the depth of fine recycled-concrete aggregate layer.
The recycled fine aggregates were mixed with weathered granite soils typically used for fill materials and tested engineering properties, physical properties, and compaction characteristics according to the mixing ratio of the mixed soils. The results of this study were as follows. For the results of A-type compaction test, the recycled fine aggregates showed low effects compared to the weathered soils, but the mixed soils which were mixed with the weathered granite soils and the recycled fine aggregates showed good compaction effects. Especially, the mixing ratio of 70:30 by weight showed for maximum compaction result. From the results of the direct shear test, the cohesion was ince csed according to proportion of the weathered granite soils. The weathered granite soils neared the optimum moisture content showed for maximum shear strength paramcoers, while the cohesion of the mixed soil was relatively ince csed in the wet side of the optimum moisture content. This trend was seemed to remained cence composition in the recycled fine aggregates. The internal friction angle of the recycled fine aggregates and the mixed soils showed maximum value near dry side of the optimum moisture contents. And the internal friction angles of the mixed soils were increased according to higher proportion of the recycled fine aggregates.
The effect of aggregates on the forming and sintering behaviors of BaTiO3 was studied. Aggregates and deaggregates of fine crystallite were obtained by thermal decomposition of oxalate coprecipitates and subsequently crushing them with a press, respectively. Large voids formed by packing of aggregates were not easily eliminated despite the successive destruction of aggregates with increasing forming pressure. As a result, compacts of aggregates showed inhomogeneity with larger mid-pore size and broader pore size distribution with respect to those of deaggregates. This inhomogeneity caused differential shrinkage and consequental internal stress, which retarded densification. The differential sintering increased the size of mid-pores in the initial stage, and formed duplex structure composed of dense region with abnormally grown grains and porous region with fine grains. The driving force of this abnormal grain growth shown in the specimens of aggregates was attributed to the minimization of the elastic strain energy due to internal stress.

Recently, the supply and demand of aggregates has become difficult due to various practical constraints such as depletion of natural aggregate resources and tightening environmental regulations. As a result, aggregates such as selective crushed aggregates and river aggregates are now distributed to the construction market. In particular, among the aggregates distributed in the country, selective crushed aggregates that have been used recently are characterized by the fact that the quality of the raw material is not uniform and is based on geological characteristics. Such bad aggregates can affect the overall performance of the concrete and shorten the life of the structure. Therefore, in this study, in order to improve such problems, we want to analyze the effect of aggregate powder on mortar.

The objective of this study is to investigate the properties of fresh concrete with recycled fine aggregates. Three different kinds of fine aggregate with natural, high and low quality recycled aggregates were prepared. The concrete mixtures were produced with test parameters of replacement ratio of recycled fine aggregate. The properties of the fresh concrete were measured by means of slump and air content according to elapsed time. Quality control method to maintain the constant total mixing water for recycled aggregate concrete was suggested. The all concrete mixtures were produced with approximately the same slump on the job site after an hour. Test results indicated that compressive strength of the concrete mixtures with constant slump is not affected by the replacement ratio of recycled fine aggregate. Therefore, the practical way for the quality control of recycled aggregate concrete is to maintain the constant total mixing water.

Using the recycled aggregate can reduces the landfill space, the demand for natural raw material for new construction. Some investigations have been carried out to study the shear behaviors of RC beams with recycled aggregates. But these have some limitation due to the use of low quality recycled aggregates and small-scale specimens in the laboratory. In this study, four full-scaled RC beams were tested to evaluate the effects of replacement level (0,30, 60, and 100%) of recycled fine aggregate on shear behavior of RC beams. The results showed that the beams with recycled fine aggregates show similar crack pattern and failure mode compared with the beam with natural aggregate. Also, the beams with recycled fine aggregates present the similar shear strength except the one with the replacement level of 100% recycled fine aggregates. Shear strength were compared with the provisions in current code (KCI2007) and the equation proposed by Zsutty. The KCI equations were conservative and subsequently can be used for the shear design of recycled aggregate concrete beam.

This study is to comparatively analyze the characteristics of pH decrease in recycled fine aggregates for embankment and landfill produced from waste concrete by using natural process and artificial process. The result was as follows In case of recycled fine aggregates left outdoor, it was found that pH level was decreased if the thickness of embankment becomes thinner, or the materials left outdoors owing to high concentration of $CO_2$ in atmosphere caused by respirations of people. When the air was permeated, pH level was decreased more effectively. It was analyzed that this phenomenon was caused by efficient supply of $CO_2$ in the recycled fine aggregates owing to high-pressure ventilators. In case of water spraying treatment, sprayed water facilitated hydration of unhydrated cement to dissolve calcium hydroxides which neutralized $CO_2$ in the atmosphere during desiccation process and decrease pH level by a considerable margin. In case of Immersed treatment, decrease of pH was not sufficient. When facilitating the supply of $CO_2$, pH level of the recycled fine aggregates was decreased by the largest margin. It was analyzed that this phenomenon was caused by efficient supply of $CO_2$. From the above results, it was analyzed that the most effective method of reducing pH level of the recycled fine aggregates from the aspects of pH reduction performance, economic efficiency and workability was repeated wet-dry cycles of spraying water to the aggregates in the proportion of 1:0.5 by weight and then treating by forcefully blowing $CO_2$ gas into the aggregates.

This paper presents a preliminary study on the influence of laterite soil replacing conventional fine aggregates on the strength properties of GGBS-blended-concrete. For this purpose, GGBS-blended-concrete samples with 40% GGBS, 60% Portland cement (PC), and locally available laterite soil was used. Laterite soils at 0, 25, 50 and 75% by weight were used in trails to replace the conventional fine aggregates. A control mix using only PC, river sand, course aggregates and water served as bench mark in comparing the performance of the composite concrete mix. Test blocks including 60 cubes for compression test; 20 cylinders for split tensile test; and 20 beams for flexural strength test were prepared in the laboratory. Results showed decreasing trends in strength parameters with increasing laterite content in GGBS-blended-concrete. 25% and 50% laterite replacement showed convincing strength (with small decrease) after 28 day curing, which is about 87-90% and 72-85% respectively in comparison to that achieved by the control mix.
