EVOLUTION OF LUMINOUS INFRARED GALAXIES REVEALED BY NEAR-INFRARED MULTI-BAND IMAGING OF THEIR HOSTS

  • We present the result of our near infrared J- (λ=1.25μm), H- (λ=1.63μm), and Ks-band (λ=2.14μm) imaging of ultraluminous (LIR > 1012L) and luminous (LIR=101112L) infrared galaxies (ULIRGs and LIRGs), to investigate their relationship through properties of their host galaxies. We find that (1) for single-nucleus ULIRGs and LIRGs, their spheroidal host galaxies have similar properties, but ULIRGs display a substantially higher level of nuclear activity than LIRGs, suggesting that their infrared luminosity difference comes primarily from the different level of current nuclear activity. We infer that LIRGs and ULIRGs have similar progenitor galaxies, follow similar evolutionary processes, and may evolve into optically-selected QSOs. (2) Largely-separated multiple-nuclei ULIRGs have significantly brighter host galaxies than single-nucleus ULIRGs and LIRGs in Ks-band, indicating that multiple-nuclei ULIRGs have a bias towards mergers of intrinsically large progenitor galaxies, in order to produce high infrared luminosity (LIR > 1012L) even at the early merging stage. (3) We derive dust extinction of host galaxies of ULIRGs and LIRGs to be AV ~ 14 mag in the optical or equivalently AK ~ 0.8 mag in the near-infrared Ks-band, based on the comparison of host galaxy's luminosities in the J-, H-, and Ks-bands.

GALAXY SED FITTING FROM AKARI TO HERSCHEL: 0.7 < z < 4 SUB-MILLIMETER LYMAN BREAK GALAXIES IN INFRARED

  • Lyman break Galaxies are galaxies selected in the rest-frame ultraviolet. But, one important and missing information for these Lyman break galaxies is the amount of dust attenuation. This is crucial to estimate the total star formation rate of this class of objects and, ultimately, the cosmic star formation density. AKARI, Spitzer and Herschel are therefore the major facilities that could provide us with this information. As part of the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey, we have began investigating the rest-frame far-infrared properties of a sample of more than 4,800 Lyman Break Galaxies in the GOODS-North fiels. Most LBGs are not detected individually, but we do detect a sub-sample of 12 objects at 0.7 < z <1.6 and one object at z = 2.0. The ones detected by Herschel SPIRE have redder observed NUV-U and U-R colors than the others, while the undetected ones have colors consistent with average LBGs at z > 2.5. We have analysed their UV-to-FIR spectral energy distributions using the code cigale to estimate their physical parameters. We find that LBGs detected by SPIRE are high mass, luminous infrared galaxies. They also appear to be located in a triangle-shaped region in the AFUV vs. logLFUV diagram limited by AFUV = 0 at the bottom and by a diagonal following the temporal evolution of the most massive galaxies from the bottom-right to the top-left of the diagram. In a second step, we move to the larger COSMOS field where we have been able to detect 80 Lyman break galaxies (out of ~ 15,600) in the far infrared. They form the largest sample of Lyman break galaxies at z > 2.5 detected in the far-infrared. We tentatively name them Submillimeter Lyman break galaxies (S-LBGs).

INFRARED AND HARD X-RAY DIAGNOSTICS OF AGN IDENTIFICATION FROM THE AKARI AND SWIFT/BAT ALL-SKY SURVEYS

  • We combine data from two all-sky surveys, the Swift/Burst Alert Telescope 22 Month Source Catalog and the AKARI Point Source Catalogue, in order to study the connection between the hard X-ray (> 10 keV) and infrared (IR) properties of local active galactic nuclei (AGN). We find two photometric diagnostics are useful for source classification: one is the X-ray luminosity vs. IR color diagram, in which type 1 radio-loud AGN are well isolated from other AGN. The second one uses the X-ray vs. IR color-color diagram as a redshift-independent indicator for identifying Compton-thick (CT) AGN. Importantly, CT AGN and starburst galaxies in composite systems can also be separated in this plane based upon their hard X-ray fluxes and dust temperatures. This diagram may be useful as a new indicator to classify objects in new surveys such as with WISE and NuSTAR.

Investigation of the surface treatment method for silent pavement in tunnels (터널 내 주행소음 저감을 위한 포장표면처리공법에 관한 조사연구)

  • The tunnels that longer than 2km which have been recently constructed have serious noise problems resulting from the friction of vehicle wheels and pavement. In special, concrete pavement inside tunnels with a closed characteristic increases discomfort due to the traffic noise and the dust of pavement pollutes the air in tunnels. Therefore, it is urgent that we find out ways to cope with. This study purported to reduce noise inside tunnels covers the investigation of various pavement surface treatment methods adapted in developed countries, the analysis of the effect in noise reduction and construction methods and cases. The surface treatment method for silent pavement in tunnels reduced noise to 5dB (A)~10dB (A). Aggregate treatment method is evaluated the most appropriate method in that, related with other surface treatment method, it reduces noise and improves skid resistance. It is necessary for us to introduce equipments and design and rearrange of specification for the development of the silent pavement method in Korea.

Development of Two-color Radiation Thermometer for Harsh Environments

  • Many industrial processes require reliable temperature measurements in harsh environments with high temperature, dust, humidity, and pressure. However, commercially-available conventional temperature measurement devices are not suitable for use in such conditions. This study thus proposes a reliable, durable two-color radiation thermometer (RT) for harsh environments that was developed by selecting the appropriate components, designing a suitable mechanical structure, and compensating environmental factors such as absorption by particles and gases. The two-color RT has a simple, compactly-designed probe with a well-structured data acquisition system combined with efficient LabVIEW-based code. As a result, the RT can measure the temperature in real time, ranging from 300 to 900C in extremely harsh environments, such as that above the burden zone of a blast furnace. The error in the temperature measurements taken with the proposed two-color RT compared to that obtained using K-type thermocouple readouts was within 6.1 to 1.4C at a temperature range from 200 to 700C. The effects of absorption by gases including CO2, CO and H2O and the scattering by fine particles were calculated to find the transmittance of the two wavelength bands of operation through the path between the measured burden surface and the two-color probe. This method is applied to determine the transmittance of the short and long wavelength bands to be 0.31 and 0.51, respectively. Accordingly, the signals that were measured were corrected, and the true burden surface temperature was calculated. The proposed two-color RT and the correction method can be applied to measure temperatures in harsh environments where light-absorbing gases and scattering particles exist and optical components can be contaminated.

Spiral Structure and Mass Inflows in Barred-Spiral Galaxies

  • We use high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations to study nonlinear gas responses to imposed non-axisymmetric stellar potentials in barred-spiral galaxies. The gas is assumed to be infinitesimally thin, isothermal, and unmagnetized. We consider various spiral-arm models with differing strength and pattern speed, while fixing the bar parameters. We find that the extent and shapes of spiral shocks as well as the related mass drift depend rather sensitively on the pattern speed. In models where the arm pattern is rotating more slowly than the bar, the gaseous arms extend from the bar ends all the way to the outer boundary, with a pitch angle slightly smaller than that of the stellar counterpart. The arms drive mass inflows at a rate of 0.52.5M/yr to the bar region to which the shock dissipation, external torque, and self-gravitational torque contribute about 50%, 40%, and 10%, respectively. About 85% of the inflowing mass is added to bar substructures such as an inner ring, dust lanes, and a nuclear ring. while the remaining 15% encircles the bar region. On the other hand, models where the arms corotate with the bar exhibit mass outflows, rather than inflows, over most of the arm region. In these models, spiral shocks are much more tightly wound than the stellar arms and cease to exist in the region where M/sinp2540, where M denotes the Mach number of a rotating gas perpendicular to the arms with pitch angle p*. We demonstrate that the distributions of line-of-sight velocities and densities can be a useful diagnostic tool to distinguish if the arms and bar corotate or not.

MODELING OF THE ZODIACAL LIGHT FOR THE AKARI MID-IR ALL-SKY DIFFUSE MAPS

  • The AKARI 9 and 18 µm diffuse maps reveal the all-sky distribution of the interstellar medium with relatively high spatial resolution of ~6". The zodiacal light is a dominant foreground component in the mid-infrared. Thus, removal of the zodiacal light is a critical issue to study low surface brightness Galactic diffuse emission. We carried out modeling of the zodiacal light based on the Kelsall model which is constructed from the COBE data. In the previous study, only a time-varying component of the zodiacal light brightness was used for determination of the model parameters. However, there remains a residual component of the zodiacal light around the ecliptic plane even after removal with the model. Therefore, instead of using a time-varying component, we use the absolute brightness of the zodiacal light and we find that the new model can better remove the residual component. As a result, the best-fit model parameters are changed from those in the previous study. We discuss the properties of the zodiacal light based on our new result.

  • The recent updates of the North Ecliptic Pole deep (0.5deg2, NEP-Deep) multi-wavelength survey covering from X-ray to radio-wave is presented. The NEP-Deep provides us with several thousands of 15μm or 18μm selected galaxies, which is the largest sample ever made at these wavelengths. A continuous filter coverage in the mid-infrared wavelength (7, 9, 11, 15, 18, and 24 µm) is unique and vital to diagnose the contributions from starbursts and AGNs in the galaxies out to z=2. The new goal of the project is to resolve the nature of the cosmic star formation history at the violent epoch (e.g. z=1-2), and to find a clue to understand its decline from z=1 to present universe by utilizing the unique power of the multiwavelength survey. The progress in this context is briefly mentioned.

A Study on the Allergen Skin Test Prevalence in the Residents of a Non-Industrial Area (비산단지역 주민 피부 알레르기반응에 관한 연구)

  • Objectives: In order to investigate the relation between environmental pollution and its effect on human health in large-scale industrial complex regions, monitoring studies have been conducted since 2003. The main purpose of this Gangneung study is to produce background data which can be compared with several large-scale industrial complex regions such as Ulsan, Sihwa, Banwol, Gwangyang, Yeosu, Pohang and Cheongju Daesan industrial complexes. Methods: In this Gangneung study, 1,007 local residents were recruited and the framework of this study was designed to evaluate and monitor health effects associated with low-level but long-term exposure to environmental pollutants. A survey was performed based on personal questionnaires, medical check-ups, and allergy skin prick tests for twelve common allergens. The authors reviewed the prevalence rate of skin allergens in Gangneung compared with in large-scale industrial areas. The results are summarized as follows. Results: The diagnosis prevalence and medical treatment prevalence of asthma were lower than in industrial complex regions, but allergic rhinitis was higher. The allergy skin test prevalence was 26.0% and the most common allergens were dust mites (D. pteronysinus 16.7% and D. farinae 16.3%). Conclusions: The positive findings of the skin prick test were similar with large-scale industrial complex regions in Korea. Further study is required to find the cause of the regional differences in skin prick prevalence.

Development of the Method Estimating Sections Occurring Intensive PM10 in a Subway Tunnel (For the South Section (Cheongdam~Jangseungbaegi) of Subway Line 7 in Seoul) (지하철 터널의 미세먼지 집중 발생구간 추정방법 개발 (서울 지하철 7호선 남단구간 (청담역~장승배기역) 을 대상으로))

  • To effectively reduce PM10 generated in concourses and platforms of subway stations, a research is being conducted to find the PM10 source. The main source of PM10 in subway stations was PM10 generated in the main line tunnels, which was generated in proportion to the frequency of the train operation. Each amount of the PM10 generated when the train was operated once, was constant regardless of the time. On the assumption that the PM10 level in a tunnel of a line is a sum of newly generated amount of dust when the subway passes and the amount carried from the adjacent stations by the wind generated from the subway rolling stocks, the method which estimates the intensive PM10 occurring section was developed and applied to the 12 stations between Cheongdam and Jangseungbaegi in Seoul Subway Line 7.
