  • Stability and sustainability of the biggest banks in any country are extremely important. When big banks become unstable and vulnerable, they typically stop lending. The resulting credit squeeze pushes the economy into recession or a slow growth path. The present study examines the financial stability and sustainability of the 30 large banks operating in the six Gulf Cooperation Council countries. These banks represent 70% of the GCC banking market. Monte Carlo simulation was attempted assuming that key drivers can vary randomly by twenty percent on either side of the current values. The conclusions are drawn based on 300 simulation trails of the five-year forecast balance and income statement of each bank. Year 2020 is not favorable for the GCC countries because of the COVID-19 pandemic and low oil prices, though the future years may be better. The study identifies several banks, which may become financially unsustainable because the simulations indicate the possibility of negative profitability, unacceptably low capital ratios and potential for heavy credit losses during periods of economic turbulence, which is the current situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through simulation the paper is able to throw light on which factors lead to bank instability and weakness.

  • This study analyzes the amendment history of Educare Law of Infants and Children, the Equal Employment Opportunity Law, and Employment Insurance Law, and also examines the present status of the employer-supported child care service through secondary analysis of other policy studies. The three laws concerning employer-supported child care can be said to hold in itself two main concepts: employers' obligations to provide child care, and government's financial support and administrative management. In terms of the first concept, laws have been amended to enlarge the number of enterprises legally-responsible for child care service and to relieve the financial burden from them. In terms of the second, laws have been amended to gradually extend the magnitude of government's financial support and to establish the systematic administrative management. Approximately a half of the policy target enterprises, however, is not complying the laws. In addition, employer-supported child care centers are only occupying less than 1% of the whole child care market. Thus, this study evaluates the current employer-supported child care service system and suggests several principles for its improvement.

  • The main purpose of this study is to analyse what are the key financial innovations in the euro area electronic payment systems. TARGET2 is the RTGS-system provided through the Eurosystem. It is used for settling central bank operations, for large interbank transfers in euro and also for other euro-denominated transfers. The specific features of TARGET2 include processing in real time, settlement in central bank money and immediate finality. In addition, the SEPA is a payment-integration initiative of the European Union for simplification of bank transfers denominated in euro. In particular, the main innovations consist of the completion of the phased migration to the TARGET2 infrastructure, and the introduction of a single retail payment market in euro - the SEPA and its products, schemes and frameworks. As the study analyse, the key innovations consist of the TARGET2 introduction, SEPA establishment and migration towards the T2S system. These innovations will lead to a better understanding of the payment and settlement systems' behavior in stress situations and to enhance the stability of the euro area financial system. Moreover, the successful integration of the European payment and settlement infrastructures will further contribute to the integration of the European financial markets, as well as to their higher competitiveness.

  • The paper examines the level of disclosure on Islamic banks' performance in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The data was collected through content analysis of annual reports and financial statements of all fully-fledged Islamic banks working in the UAE over the period 2009 to 2013. Return on Assets is used as a proxy for the performance of Islamic banks while disclosure index is used as a proxy for Islamic banks' disclosure. Also, predetermined variables are used in the study like Size, Deposits, Non-Performing Investments and Capital to Risk Weighted Assets Ratio. Two-Stage Least-Square regression method is used to check the interdependence relationships between disclosure and performance of Islamic banks in the UAE. The results show a significant relationship between performance and disclosure in the UAE Islamic banks. Our regression results show that Islamic banks with higher levels of disclosure lead to higher operating performance. Furthermore, the performance has a great impact on the level of disclosure which means Islamic banks with high performance measures will disclose more information for investors and other institutions in order to reduce the cost of equity and increase their values in the market. This study is considered as a battery for further studies in the relationship between disclosure and financial performance of Islamic banks at a global level.

  • This study examines the stability and excellence of portfolio investment strategies based on the accounting information of the Korean stock market. In the process of constructing the portfolio, various combinations of financial ratios are used to select the stocks with high expected return and to measure their performance. We also tried to improve our investment performance by using genetic algorithm optimization. The results of this study show that portfolio strategies using accounting information are effective for investment decision making and can achieve high investment performance. We also verify that portfolio strategy using genetic algorithms can be effective for investment decision making.

  • This paper investigates whether the investment of a chaebol firm depends on financial characteristics such as leverage and growth opportunity. We find that the investment of a chaebol firm increases as its growth opportunity increases. We also find that this positive effect of growth opportunity on the investment is more pronounced in a low-leverage firm than in a high-leverage firm. Unlike chaebol firms, however, the interaction effect between leverage and growth opportunity is not statistically significant for nonchaebol firms.

  • Recently, control theory including stochastic optimal control and various machine-learning-based artificial intelligence methods have become major tools in the field of financial engineering. In this paper, we briefly review some recent papers utilizing stochastic optimal control theory in the fields of the pair trading for mean-reverting markets and the trend-following strategy, and consider a couple of strategies utilizing both stochastic optimal control theory and machine learning methods to acquire more flexible and accessible tools. Illustrative simulations show that the considered strategies can yield encouraging results when applied to a set of real financial market data.
