  • The purpose of this article is to measure the level of insurance industry's social cognition based on the university students' survey questionnaire. For this, this study analyzes the cognition of students on the level of social reliability, the causes of low reliability, and the measures of enhancing the reliability level about insurance industry. For the analysis of survey questionnaire, partially ranked data analysis was employed. The results show that most students recognize that the reliability of insurance industry is lower than that of other financial industry such as banks and securities firms. The main reason for this low reliability is the lack of sales forces' specialty, the complexity of insurance products and contracts, and negative media release about insurance industry. To enhance the social reliability level of insurance, establishment of the future insurance image is essential, and that can be achieved through strengthening the insurance education and public relations and simplifying insurance products and contracts.

  • Today, many universities are confronted with the changing education paradigm such as e-learning, Distance Education, Virtual University, This IT-based teaming paradigm shift is certainly a new opportunity or a threat to our universities. To overcome this problem the universities should think e-Learning as strategic weapon, such as many firms created competitive weapons from the information systems at the 1980s. So, e-Learning system can be a SIS(Strategic Information System) which supports university's future education strategies. To build a e-Learning system, not only many H/W and S/W resources but also expert personnels are required. An organization such as local university who is week at financial status can't himself plan the system. The Local University Community e-Learning Centers that support the demand of e-learning for their community are recommended. In order to operate these centers efficiently, the strategic roles of the e-Learning center should first be defined. To define the strategic roles, We classified the strategic roles of the e-Learning center into four dimensions, (1) to improve management efficiency, (2) to enhance educational service, (3) to acquire competitive advantages, (4) to build new education infrastructure, and each dimension has 5 or 6 measurement items. As result, to enhance the educational service was considered as the most significant factor among the four dimensions of strategic roles, and the infrastructure building was the next. We also tried to find the difference for each factor by the characteristics of responsor. The data showed that there was litter difference between the groups in evaluating the significance of strategic roles of e-learning centers. Through the strategic roles definition and analysis of expected role ratings, we could have recommended the direction and operation policies of the e-Loaming centers.

  • Many of the theoretical studies have considered herd behavior as a source of the volatility in financial markets, but there have been few empirical studies on the dynamic herding due to the technical difficulty of detecting herd behavior with time-series data. In this context, this paper proposes a new method for measuring time-varying herd behavior based on QR-GARCH model. Using daily data of KOSPI stocks, this paper provides some empirical evidence for strong and volatile herding among traders of stocks of medium firms, and shows that time-varying herd behavior in traders of some stocks has persistent autocorrelation.

  • Financial IT evaluation methods have been unable to satisfy firms' requirements. There has been a growing demand for more comprehensively and non-financially measuring the IT performance. We developed a process-based approach in evaluating impacts of IT on primary activities. In this research we proposed a model that uses the corporate objective of IT and strategic fitt as the core independent variables in measuring the IT effect. Based on the data collected from the management variables of the 125 companies located in Korea, the companies were classified into the 4 different groups according to their corporate objective for IT: un-oriented, operations oriented, market oriented and dual oriented. Through the empirical analysis, we were able to demonstrate that the management of the companies showing a higher orientation level perceives a better IT investment performance, and this shows that the corporate objective for IT serves as a useful index for measuring the IT investment effect. In this research, it was also demonstrated that the strategic alignment has a positive influence on perceiving the IT investment effect.

  • Background: The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) in Lebanon provides cancer drugs free of charge for uninsured patients who account for more than half the total case-load. Other categories of cancer care are subsidized under more stringent eligibility criteria. MOPH's large database offers an excellent opportunity to analyze the cost of cancer treatment in Lebanon. Materials and Methods: Using utilization and spending data accumulated at MOPH during 2008-2013, the cost to the public budget of cancer drugs was assessed per case and per drug type. Results: The average annual cost of cancer drugs was 6,475$ per patient. Total cancer drug costs were highest for breast cancer, followed by chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), colorectal cancer, lung cancer, and Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), which together represented 74% of total MOPH cancer drug expenditure. The annual average cancer drug cost per case was highest for CML ($31,037), followed by NHL ($11,566). Trastuzumab represented 26% and Imatinib 15% of total MOPH cancer drug expenditure over six years. Conclusions: Sustained increase in cancer drug cost threatens the sustainability of MOPH coverage, so crucial for socially vulnerable citizens. To enhance the bargaining position with pharmaceutical firms for drug cost containment in a small market like Lebanon, drug price comparisons with neighboring countries which have already obtained lower prices may succeed in lowering drug costs.

  • This paper examines the effect of corporate social responsosibility(CSR) on the firm value. Based on the argument that CSR would play the role of mitigating conflicts between firms and society, I hypothesized that CSR would enhance the firm value. This study used regression analysis with a data set of 733 from 2009 to 2012 using KEJI(Korean Economic Justice Institute) Index. An Index published by KEJI was used as the measure of CSR performance. The results of this study are summarized as follows: First, there is a significant positive relation between CSR and firm value. Second, in the seven-rating items consist of the KEJI Index, most items have the positive relationship with the firm value. These results suggest that firm with higher CSR activities exhibit better financial performance as measured by Tobin's Q.

  • Health Information Exchange (HIE) is expected to improve the quality and efficiency of care by allowing providers online access to healthcare information generated by other providers at the point of care. However, the adoption of the technology in Korea has been slow since its pilot program in 2007~2010 at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. The objective of this study was to survey stakeholders on the incentive program for the facilitation of HIE adoption. We surveyed 39 experts representing 6 categories of stakeholders-provider, insurer, government, information service firms, customers, and medical informatics experts for the interviews. Interview questions included program objectives, program participation requirements, incentive payment method, and administrative burden for program participation. Experts indicated that the quality of care was the most important value the program should aim to achieve through the HIE adoption. They suggested that the requirements and administrative burden for participation should be kept at minimum to recruit a large number of providers to the program, which is an indicator of program success. Experts were divided on the payment method whether the incentive should be paid as a part of the fee payment scheme operated by the National Health Insurance (NHI) or should be a payment made independent of the NHI. The source of the divide was conflict of interest among stakeholders as to who pays for the program, and the insurer and consumer groups were against the NHI taking the financial burden. It appeared to be the most significant factor for the successful program launching to resolve the gap in perceptions about benefits of the technology among stakeholders and to win the willingness to pay for the program.

  • Since the late 1990s dualistic spatial structure has been configurated in Icheon ceramic industrial space due to the articulation of transmitted ceramics space rooted from imitating the Goryeo and Joseon ceramics and contemporary ceramics space based on academic ceramic arts. Therefore, the main purpose of this paper is to identify the formation of dualistic space in Icheon by investigating the development paths of ceramic industry in historical perspectives and analyzing inter- and extra-firm relations in Icheon. The main results of this research are as follows. Firstly, the development path of transmitted ceramics has declined gradually, while the development path of contemporary ceramics has been embedded in Icheon region. Secondly, the research pointed out that networks of transmitted ceramics and contemporary ceramics are different in the perspectives of inter-firm and extra-firm relations. Thirdly, the government has played a critical role as a financial and administrative supporter and as a network broker between university and Icheon ceramic firms(mainly with transmitted ceramics) for technological cooperation and collaborative R&D.
