Global seismic damage assessment of high-rise hybrid structures

  • Nowadays, many engineers believe that hybrid structures with reinforced concrete central core walls and perimeter steel frames offer an economical method to develop the strength and stiffness required for seismic design. As a result, a variety of such structures have recently been applied in actual construction. However, the performance-based seismic design of such structures has not been investigated systematically. In the performance-based seismic design, quantifying the seismic damage of complete structures by damage indices is one of the fundamental issues. Four damage states and the final softening index at each state for high-rise hybrid structures are suggested firstly in this paper. Based on nonlinear dynamic analysis, the relation of the maximum inter-story drift, the main structural characteristics, and the final softening index is obtained. At the same time, the relation between the maximum inter-story drift and the maximum roof displacement over the height is also acquired. A double-variable index accounting for maximum deformation and cumulative energy is put forward based on the pushover analysis. Finally, a case study is conducted on a high-rise hybrid structure model tested on shaking table before to verify the suggested quantities of damage indices.

  • A sequential coupled field analysis of electromagnetic free bulging was performed by using FEM. A 2D axi-symmetric electromagnetic model based on the magnetic vector potential is proposed for the calculation of magnetic field and Lorentz's forces. The Newmark integration method is used to calculate the transient dynamic plastic deformation of sheet during free bulging. In the finite element model, the effect of sheet deformation on the electromagnetic field analysis is taken into consideration. In order to confirm the sequential electromagnetic-mechanical coupling analysis, an experiment with an electromagnetic forming apparatus was conducted. The results showed that the final bulge height of the sheet predicted from the proposed method is in good agreement with experimentally measured height.

UBET Analysis and Model Test of the Forming Process of Magnetron Anode (마그네트론 양극 성형공정의 UBET해석 및 모형실험)

  • Copper magnetron anode of a microsave-over consists of an cylindrical outer-tube and various inner-vanes. The magnetron anode is produced by the complex processes; vane blanking, pipe cutting and silver-alloy brazing of vanes. Recently, the backward extrusion process for forming vanes has been developed to avoid the complex procedures. The developed process is analyzed by using upper-bound elemental technique (UBET). In the UBET analysis, the upper-bound load, the configuration and the vane-height of final extruded product are determined by minimizing the roral power consumption with repect to chosen parameters. To verify theoretical analysis, experiments have been carried out with pure plasticine billets at room temperature, using different web-thickness and number of vanes. The theoretical predictions both for forming load and vane-height are in reasonable agreement with the experimental results.

  • Growth retardation is a common consequenc of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in childhood. Many recent clinical and experimental data indicate that growth failure in CKD is mainly due to a relative GH insensitivity and functional IGF-I deficiency. Glucocorticoids also glucocorticoids interfere with the integrity of the somatotropic hormone axis at various levels. Over the past 10 years, recombinant growth hormone (rhGH) has been used to help short children with chronic kidney disease. A GH dosage of 0.35 mg/kg/week (28 IU/$m^2$/week) appears efficient and safe. Some clinical trial data show that final height will be within the normal target height range when GH treatment is continued for many years without remarkable adverse events.

  • In order to investigate the effect of flange wrinkling on the wall break of a deep drawn rectangular cup, experiments and simulation were done. The effect of the wrinkling height on drawing force and wall break for a moving blank holder system with spacer were studied by setting a fixed clearance between the drawing die and the blank holder. Simulation and experimental results showed that wall break could be provoked by the flange wrinkling. As the wrinkling height increased, the punch force grew. The maximum punch force was obtained at its final stage of stroke.

  • The sensitivity analysis of two short-term models (ISCST3, INPUFF2.5) is performed to improve the model accuracy. It appears that the sensitivities on the changes of wind speed, stack height and stack inner diameter in the near distance from source, stability and mixing height in the remote distance form source, are significant. Also the gas exit velocity, stack inner diameter, gas temperature and air temperature which affect the plume rise have some effects on the concentration values of each model within the downwind distance where final plume rise is determined. And in modeling for the atmospheric dispersion of point pollutant source INPUFF2.5 can calculate amount, trajectory of puff and concentration versus time at each receptors. So, it is compatible to analyze distribution of point pollutants concentration at modeling area.

  • Tube Process(TP) is one of the processes to produce permanent magnets. Advantage claimed for this process is that it can accmplish both densification and anisotropication in one step forming. This process is distinguished from other processes since it uses deformable tube for densification of powder magnets. TP has, however, difficulties in manufacturing permanent magnets from Nd-Fe-B green powder due to folding resulted from large height reduction and localized densification. Therefore, an adequate preform is necessary to reduce folding resulted from large height reduction and localized densification. Therefore, an adequate preform is necessary to reduce folding, lead magnets into almost desired final shape and get uniform densification. In this paper, preform design for TP is carried out without a deformable tube to investigate the behaviour of magnet sinter-forging. Preform design is accomplished to increase the effective magnet area with a near net shape and uniform densification.

Effect of Cutting Conditions on Burr Formation in Micro-drilling of A6061 (A6060의 미소 드릴링시 절삭조건이 Burr 형성에 미치는 영향)

  • Theoretical and experimental studies on burr formation and deburring in many manufacturing processes have been actively pursued. Though micro-drilling has become more important in the production of precision parts such as PCB, air bearing, camera and nozzle, most studies on drilling burr formation have focused on the conventional drilling process. This paper describes burr formation process and the effect of cutting conditions such as spindle speed, feedrate and drilling depth per one step on burr formation in drilling A6061 with drills of diameter 1.0mm and 0.6mm. Experimental results showed that burr with cap were formed at relatively low feedrates, while petal burrs with several large burr fragments were formed at high feedrates. Burr height appeared to increase at the hight feedrates and lower spindle speeds. The effect of final cutting depth on burr height was negligible.

Long-term Retrospective Clinical Study Comparing Submerged Type with External Hex Connection and Non-submerged Type with Internal Morse Taper Connection Implants

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to compare the survival and success rates, and long-term crestal bone loss according to the use of 2 connection types of dental implants (submerged-USII and non-submerged-SSII; Osstem $Implant^{(R)}$) by analyzing the change in alveolar bone height after 1 year under load and during final follow-up period. Materials and Methods: Between December 2004 and August 2008, patients with two types of Osstem implants (USII and SSII) were retrieved retrospectively. A total of 92 patients with 284 implants (USII=60, SSII=224) was finally selected. Their mean follow-up period was 7.5 years. The mesial and distal alveolar crestal bone changes were measured using radiographic images and the average was calculated at 1 year after loading and during final follow-up period. Result: Among the 284 implants, 4 USII and 7 SSII implants were removed, indicating 93.3% and 96.9% survival rates. Of the survived implants, mean crestal bone loss 1 year after loading was 0.39 mm for USII and 0.19 mm for SSII (P=0.018). During the final follow-up, mean crestal bone loss was 0.63 mm and 0.35 mm for USII and SSII, respectively, without statistical significance (P=0.092). According to the criteria for the success and failure of the implant by Albreksson and colleagues, final success rate was estimated as 86.7% for USII and 91.5% for SSII, respectively. Conclusion At 1 year after loading, the average crestal bone loss was significantly different between USII and SSII; however, both types met the criteria for implant success. During the final follow-up, both groups showed insignificant bone resorption patterns and did not show any pathological clinical symptoms. Therefore, both implants exhibited high long-term stability.
