The packaging with environment-friendly materials become more important issue since the concern for the environment and the disposal of waste such as the packaging materials has increased. Although the paper based packaging such as corrugated box are widely used as a typical environment-friendly packaging stuff, the heat insulation properties of paper packaging did not get many attention. In this study, the heat insulation properties of paper were deeply evaluated to improve the functional properties as packaging material of the cold storage goods. The simple device for evaluating the heat insulation of paper product was developed. Subsequently, the changes in the heat insulation depending on the paper structure and the addition of the inorganic fillers were investigated by using the instrument. The higher basis weight and the less beating time resulted in the bulkier structure and the less efficiency of heat transfer. The addition of the perlite powder as a filler resulted in the great increase in the heat insulation, although the addition of the calcium carbonate decreased the heat insulation potential of paper.
This study was carried out to know the adaptability of barley flour, potato flour and white ash as extender and filler of urea-formaldehyde resin for plywood as a substitute material of wheat flour. The extenders and filler used at this study were extended by several groups of percentages. Shear strength, moisture contents, and specific gravities were compared among tested groups. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1) Wet and dry shear strength of plywoods extended by 10% barley flour, 30% potato flour, and wheat flours were shown better results than non extended plywoods. 2) There was no significant difference between plywoods extended until 50% barley flours and non extended plywoods. 3) Shear strength of plywoods extended by 50% potato and 100% barley flours were shown worse result than non extended. 4) Dry and wet shear strength of plywoods extended by white ash were shown worst result. 5) The plywoods extended by potato flours were shown not only better shear strength, but also considered more profitable cost for extending.

Four point bending tests of the brazed joint composed of sintered silicon nitride and 0.2% carbon steel with Cusil ABA filler which were fabricated at 86$0^{\circ}C$ were performed at temperatures, 25, 100, 200, 300, 400, 50$0^{\circ}C$ From the experiments, the maximum bending strength was measured at 30$0^{\circ}C$ From the 3D FE analysis of the residual stress of the brazed joint, it was revealed that the thermally induced residual stresses were minimized when the environmental temperature was 35$0^{\circ}C$ Considering the degradation of the filler material at high temperatures, it was calculated that the maximum bending strength of the brazed joint occured just below the temperature of the minimum thermal residual stress and the thermal residual stress was the dominative parameter of the brazed joint.

The effect of surface treatment of kaolinite with silane coupling agent on the reinforcement of SBR was investigated. The possibility of the practical use of kaolinite as an organic filler was also scrutinized and it was found that the reinforcement of SBR was improved by modifying surface of the cheap inactive inorganic filler with organic silane coupling agents. 3-Chloropropyltrimethoxysilane(C-series), 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane(M-series) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane(A-series) were used as coupling agents. To test the material properties of vulcanized and unvulcanized SBR, Mooney viscosity, modulus, elongation and fractured surface measurements by SEM were carried out by changing the amount of silane coupling agents. Torqe of the unvulcanized SBR following the measurement of the degree of vulcanization was to be increased as the amount of silane was increasing, and Mooney viscosity of M-series and A-series was also increased.
Wood filler is a porous and anisotropic material having different size, shape, and aspect ratio. The use of wood fillers such as wood particle, wood flour, and wood pulp in wood plastic composites (WPCs) are growing rapidly because these wood fillers give improved strength and stiffness to WPCs. However, the wood fillers have originally poor compatibility with plastic matrix affecting the mechanical properties of WPCs. Therefore, to improve compatibility between wood and plastic, numbers of physical and chemical treatments were investigated. While the various treatments led to improved performances in WPC industries using petroleum-based plastics, full biodegradation is still issues due to increased environmental concerns. Hence, bio-based plastics such as polylactide and polyhydroxybutyrate having biodegradable characteristics are being applied to WPCs, but relatively expensive prices of existing bio-based plastics prevent further uses. As conventional processing methods, extrusion, injection, and compression moldings have been used in WPC industries, but to apply WPCs to engineered or structural places, new processing methods should be developed. As one system, co-extrusion technique was introduced to WPCs and the co-extruded WPCs having core-shell structures make the extended applications of WPCs possible.

The objective of this research is to investigate the influence of material characteristic and design on to the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding characteristics. Basalt glass fiber reinforced composite specimens with stainless fiber conductive filler were manufactured to perform the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness(SE) experiments. In order to reflection and absorb the specimen in electromagnetic fields, flanged coaxial transmission line sample holder was fabricated according to ASTM D 4935-89. Electromagnetic shielding effectiveness(EMSE) was measured quantitatively to examine the electromagnetic shielding characteristics of designed specimens. The result of EMI shielding experiments showed that maximum EMSE value of sandwich type specimens with GSG(basalt glass fiber/stainless fiber/basalt glass fiber) and SGS(stainless fiber/basalt glass fiber/stainless fiber) were 65dB and 80dB at a frequency of 1,500MHz, respectively.
The mechanical, electrical and thermal characteristics of insulating materials may significantly affect the performance and reliability of electrical devices using superconductors. General method to provide insulating layer between coated conductors is wrapping coated conductor with Kapton tape. But uniform and compact wrapping without failure or delamination in whole coverage for long length conductor is not a simple task and need careful control. Coating of insulating layer directly on coated conductor is desirable for providing compact insulating layer rather than wrapping insulating layers around conductor. Ceramic added polymer has been widely used as an insulating material for electric machine because of its good electrical insulating properties as well as excellent heat resistance and fairy good mechanical properties. The insulating layer of coated conductor should have high breakdown voltage and possesses suitable mechanical strength and maintain adhesiveness at the cryogenic temperature where it is used and withstand stress from thermal cycling. The insulating and mechanical properties of polymer can be improved by adding functional filler. In this study, insulating layer has been made by adding ceramic particles such as $SiO_2$ to a polymer resin. The size, amount and morphology of added ceramic powder was controlled and their effect on dielectric property of the final composite was measured and discussed for optimum composite fabrication.

Recently, methods that usea carbon-based filler, a conductive nanomaterial, have been investigated to develop composite fillers containing dielectric materials. In this study, we added geometric changes to a carbon fiber, a typical carbon-based filler material, by differentiating the orientation angle and the number of plies of the fiber. We also studied the electrical and electromagnetic shield characteristics. Based on the orientation angle of $0^{\circ}$, the orientation angle of the carbon fiber was changed between 0, 15, 30, 45, and $90^{\circ}$, and 2, 4, and 6 plies were stacked for each orientation angle. The maximum effect was found when the orientation angle was $90^{\circ}$, which was perpendicular to the electromagnetic wave flow, as compared to $0^{\circ}$, in which case the electrical resistance was small. Therefore, it is verified that the orientation angle has more of an effect on the electromagnetic interference shield performance than the number of plies.

In order to develop new insulating materials for GIS Spacer using environmentally friendly insulating gas, three kinds of dispersed liquid nano composites of solid epoxy /nano layered silicate filled material were prepared. And the epoxy/nano/micro silica composite was prepared by mixing epoxy/nano 3 phr dispersion/4 kinds of filler contents(40,50,60, 70wt%). The electrical insulation breakdown strengths of the nano and nano/micro mixed composites were evaluated by using 8 kinds of samples including the original epoxy. The mechanical tensile strength of the epoxy / nano / micro silica composite were evaluated, also. The TEM was measured to evaluate the internal structure of nano/micro composites. As a result, it was confirmed that the layered silicate nano particles was exfoliated through the process of inserting epoxy resin between silicate layers and the layers. In addition, dispersion of nano / micro silica resulted in improvement of electrical insulation breakdown strength with increase of filling amount of dense tissue with nanoparticles inserted between microparticles. In addition, the tensile strength showed a similar tendency, and as the content of microsilica filler increased, the mechanical improvement was further increased.
Cold-mixed asphalt mixture is a widely recommended asphalt pavement materials with potentially economic and environmental benefits. Due to the reduction of natural non-renewable mineral resources, powder minerals with similar properties are considered as new mineral fillers in asphalt mixtures. This study explored the feasibility of using cement to replace natural limestone powder (LP) in emulsified asphalt concrete modified by styrene-butadiene styrene copolymer. The experimental tests, including compressive strength, Marshall stability as well as moisture susceptibility test, were used to investigate the mechanical properties, the Marshall stability, flow value, as well as the moisture damage. In addition, the influence of material composition on the performance of asphalt concrete is explained by the microstructure evolution of the pore structure, the interface transition zone (ITZ), and the micromorphology. Due to mineralogical reactivity of cement, its replacement part of LP improved the mechanical properties, Marshall stability, but it will reduce the moisture susceptibility and flow value. This is because with the increase of the cement substitution rate, the pore structure of the asphalt concrete is refined, the width of ITZ becomes smaller, and the microstructure is more compact. In addition, asphalt concrete with a larger nominal particle size (AC-16) has relatively better performance.
