  • Recently, LINUX cluster file systems based on the storage area network (SAN) have been developed. In those systems, without using a central file server, multiple clients sharing the whole disk storage through Fibre Channel can freely access disk storage and act as file servers. Accordingly, they can offer advantages such as availability, load balancing, and scalability. In this paper, we describe metadata management schemes designed for a new SAN-based LINUX cluster file system. First, we present a new inode structure which is better than previous ones in disk block access time. Second, a new directory structure which uses extendible hashing is described. Third, we describe a novel scheme to manage free disk blocks, which is suitable for very large file systems. Finally, we present how we handle metadata journaling. Through performance evaluation, we show that our proposed schemes have better performance than previous ones.

  • IoT(Internet of Things) is a concept of connected internet pursuing direct access to devices or sensors in fused environment of personal, industrial and public area. In IoT environment, it is possible to access realtime data, and the data format and topology of devices are diverse. Also, there are bidirectional communications between users and devices to control actuators in IoT. In this point, IoT is different from the conventional internet in which data are produced by human desktops and gathered in server systems by way of one-sided simple internet communications. For the cloud or portal service of IoT, there should be a file management framework supporting systematic naming service and unified data access interface encompassing the variety of IoT things. This paper implements a DB-based virtual file system maintaining attributes of IoT things in a UNIX-styled file system view. Users who logged in the virtual shell are able to explore IoT things by navigating the virtual file system, and able to access IoT things directly via UNIX-styled file I O APIs. The implemented virtual file system is lightweight and flexible because it maintains only directory structure and descriptors for the distributed IoT things. The result of a test for the virtual shell primitives such as mkdir() or chdir() shows the smooth functionality of the virtual file system, Also, the exploring performance of the file system is better than that of Window file system in case of adopting a simple directory cache mechanism.

  • This paper describes the improvement of web cache server by scoping in replacement algorithm of data which are collected from the clients. We have found that each replacement algorithm is suitable for each type of data in the web pages. Therefore, we introduce the mechanism to select the replacement algorithm depending on the size of data called the Replacement Algorithm Selection Mechanism (RASM). RASM allows the web cache server to have the suitable replacement algorithm for each type of data. As the result, the byte hit ratio of web cache server can be increased and the congestion in the network can be alleviated.

  • We describe a method for streaming specific section using the section information among peers on P2P network. As peers tend to extract only the part of contents in which they are interested, an indexed file is created based on the section information of multimedia contents and registered in the search server. If a peer requests the streaming of specific parts of the contents to other corresponding peer using the section information that the server returns, the peer streams only separated section of the multimedia contents according to the information. For this process, we implement a function that a peer's PC can play a role as a server, and the peer streams the separated content based on the section information that the server supplies.

  • In this paper, we describe a case study to improve performance through the load testing of multi-tired system for financial accounts before the system opening. The load test was conducted after the data collection tools(Performance Monitor, DB PSSDiag) were installed. By analyzing the collected log, we were able to identify the main sector requiring performance improvements among the presentation tier, web tier, business logic tier and data tier. The ASP.NET server-down on the web tier could be improved by modifying the parameter values in the configuration file. Some server downs occurred on the business logic tier when a large number of users access at the same time, were more difficult to be solved. By analyzing the hang-dump at the server-down time, we were able to find a process that caused the problem. and we had to modify the relevant codes. For major performance improvements of the data-tier, indices of some queries was optimized by using the built-in DBMS query analyzer, after analyzing the log of long-response-time queries. The problems and solutions considered in this case study will be a reference for the performance improvement of a multi-layer system with the similar structure.

  • A cluster consists of a collection of interconnected stand-alone computers working together and provides a high-availability solution in application area such as web services or information systems. Content-based load distribution for web server clusters uses the detailed data found in the application layer to intelligently route user requests among web servers. In this paper, we propose a content-based load distribution algorithm that considers cache hit and load information of the web servers under the web server clusters. In addition, we expand this algorithm in order to manage user requests for dynamic file. Specially, our algorithm does not keep track of any frequency of access information or try to model the contents of the caches of the web servers.

  • We propose the PBSM(Protocol-Based Security Module) system which guarantees the secure data transmission under web environments. There are two modules in the PBSM architecture. One is Web Server Security Module(WSSM) which is working on a web server, the other is the Winsock Client Security Module(WSCSM) which is working on a client. The WSCSM security module decrypts the encrypted HTML document that is received from the security web server. The decrypted HTML document is displayed on the screen of a client. The WSSM module contains the encryption function for HTML file and the decryption function for CGI(Common Gateway Interface). The formal analysis methodology is imported from format theory for analyzing the data flow of the PBSM system. The formal analysis methodology is based on the order theory.

  • Today distributed data storage service are being widely used. However lack of proper means of security makes the user data vulnerable. In this work, we propose a Randomized Block Size (RBS) model for secure data storage in distributed environments. The model work with multifold block sizes encrypted with the Chinese Remainder Theorem-based RSA (C-RSA) technique for end-to-end security of multimedia data. The proposed RBS model has a key generation phase (KGP) for constructing asymmetric keys, and a rand generation phase (RGP) for applying optimal asymmetric encryption padding (OAEP) to the original message. The experimental results obtained with text and image files show that the post encryption file size is not much affected, and data is efficiently encrypted while storing at the distributed storage server (DSS). The parameters such as ciphertext size, encryption time, and throughput have been considered for performance evaluation, whereas statistical analysis like similarity measurement, correlation coefficient, histogram, and entropy analysis uses to check image pixels deviation. The number of pixels change rate (NPCR) and unified averaged changed intensity (UACI) were used to check the strength of the proposed encryption technique. The proposed model is robust with high resilience against eavesdropping, insider attack, and chosen-plaintext attack.

  • EXT3NS is a special-purpose file system for large scale multimedia streaming servers. It is built on top of streaming acceleration hardware device called Network-Storage card. The EXT3NS file system significantly improves streaming performance by eliminating memory-to-memory copy operations, i.e. sending video/audio from disk directly to network interface with no main memory buffering. In this paper, we design and implement a buffer cache mechanism, called PMEMCACHE, for EXT3NS file system. We also propose a buffer cache replacement method called ONS for the buffer cache mechanism. The ONS algorithm outperforms other existing buffer replacement algorithms in distributed multimedia streaming environment. In EXT3NS with PMEMCACHE, operation is 33MB/sec and random read operation is 2.4MB/sec. Also, the buffer replacement ONS algorithm shows better performance by 600KB/sec than other buffer cache replacement policies. As a result PMEMCACHE and an ONS can greatly improve the performance of multimedia steaming server which should supportmultiple client requests at the same time.

  • Journaling file systems (JFS) manage changes of file systems not yet committed in a data structure known as a journal to restore the file system in the event of an unexpected failure. Extra write operations required for journaling negatively affect the performance of JFS. The high-performance and byte-addressable non-volatile memory (NVM) was expected to easily mitigate these performance problems by providing NVM space as journal storage. However, even with such non-volatile memory technologies, performance problems still arise due to scalability problems inherent in processing transactions of JFS. To solve this problem, we proposes a technique for processing file system transactions for scalable performance. To this end, lock-free data structures are used and multiple I/O requests are allowed to simultaneously be processed on high-performance storage devices with multiple I/O channels. We evaluate the file system with the proposed technique by comparing the original ext4 file system and the recent proposed NVM-based journaling file system on a multi-core server, and experimental results show that our file system has better performance (up-to 2.9/2.3 times) than the original ext4 file system and the recent NVM-based journaling file system, respectively.
