Observation of saturation transfer characteristics in solution processed vertical organic field-effect transistors (VOFETs) with high leakage current

  • Unlike ordinary organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), saturation current is hardly to be found in vertical OFETs (VOFETs). Moreover, the fabrication process of patterned sourced for VOFETs is quite complex. In this current work, a simple solution processed VOFET with directly deposited intermediate silver source electrode has been demonstrated. The VOFET exhibits a high leakage current that induces an inversion polarity of its transistor behavior. Interestingly, a well-defined saturation current was observed in the linear scale of transfer characteristic. The VOFET operated with high-current density > $280mA/cm^2$ at $V_d=5V$. Overview potential of the fabricated device in display application is also presented. This preliminary work does open-up a new direction in VOFET fabrication and their application.

  • Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) based on spray-pyrolysis deposition technique has attracted large attention due to simple and low-cost processibility while preserving their intrinsic optical and electrical characteristics. However, their high process temperature limits practical applications. Here, we demonstrated the nc-ZnO/ZnO field-effect transistors (FETs) via spray-pyrolysis as incorporating ZnO nanocrystalline nanoparticles into typical ZnO precursor. The nc-ZnO/ZnO FETs exhibit good quality of electrical properties. Our experiments reveal that nc-ZnO in active layer enhance electrical characteristics.

  • The performance of graphene-based electronic devices is critically affected by the quality of the graphene-metal contact. The understanding of graphene-metal is therefore critical for the successful development of graphene-based electronic devices, especially field-effect-transistors. Here, we provide a review of the peculiar properties of graphene-metal contacts, including work function pinning, the charge transport mechanism, the impact of the process on the contract resistance, and other factors.

  • In this work, the electrical characteristics of organic thin film transistors with the surface-treated organic gate insulators have been studied. For the surface treatment, the simple rubbing technique was used. The field effect mobilities of the devices with PVP gate insulator was improved about four times as high as those of TFTs without the insulator surface treatment.

  • We have fabricated vertical-type organic transistors (static induction transistors; SITs) with built-in nano-triode arrays formed in parallel by a colloidal-lithography technique. Using this technique, we could fabricate a microstructure in a lateral direction within a large-scale organic device without relying on photolithography. The organic transistor showed low operating voltages, high current output, and large transconductance.

  • Displacement current $(I_{dis})$ and drain-to-source current $(I_{DS})$ are evaluated using the simultaneous measurements of source $(I_S)$ and drain $(I_D)$ currents during the application of a constant drain voltage and a triangular-wave gate voltage $(V_{GS})$ to top-contact pentacene thin-film transistors.

  • Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) 기능성 박막을 도입하여 적은 게이트 누설 전류 특성을 가지는 유기트랜지스터를 제작하고 평가하였다. UV/ozone 처리를 하여 PDMS 표면에 위치한 소수성의 메틸 그룹의 화학적 결합을 끊어 친수성 실리콘 산화막 성질로 표면을 변화시키고 선택적인 펜타신 증착을 유도하였다. Off 전압상태 ($V_g-V_t>0$)에서 게이트 전압에 의해 기인하는 누설 전류는 선형영역 ($V_d=-5\;V$)과 포화영역 ($V_d=-30\;V$)에서 ${\sim}10^{-10}$ A의 값을 보여주며 기존의 트랜지스터 보다 개선된 누설 전류 특성을 나타내었다.

  • We studied the electrical characteristics of pentacene-based organic field-effect transistors (FETs) with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or poly-4-vinylphenol (PVP) as the gate insulator. PMMA or PVP was spin-coated on the indium tin oxide glass substrate that serves as gate electrodes. The source-drain current dependence on the gate voltage shows the FET characteristics of the hole accumulation type. The transistor with PVP shows a higher field-effect mobility of 0.14 $cm^{2}/Vs$ compared with 0.045 $cm^{2}/Vs$ for the transistor with PMMA. The atomic force microscope (AFM) images indicate that the grain size of the pentacene on PVP is larger than that on PMMA. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns for the pentacene deposited on PVP exhibit a new Bragg reflection at $19.5{\pm}0.2^{\circ}$, which is absent for the pentacene on PMMA. This peak corresponds to the flat-lying pentacene molecules with less intermolecular spacing.

  • Herein, we report the manufacture of high-performance, ambipolar organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and complementary-like electronic circuitry based on a blended, polymeric, semiconducting film. Relatively high and well-balanced electron and hole mobilities were achieved by incorporating a small amount of ionic additives. The equivalent P-channel and N-channel properties of the ambipolar OFETs enabled the manufacture of complementary-like inverter circuits with a near-ideal switching point, high gain, and good noise margins, via a simple blanket spin-coating process with no additional patterning of each active P-type and N-type semiconductor layer.
