  • In the present paper, a simple refined nth-higher-order shear deformation theory is applied for the free vibration analysis of laminated composite plates. The proposed displacement field is based on a novel kinematic in which include the undetermined integral terms and contains only four unknowns, as against five or more in case of other higher-order theories. The present theory accounts for adequate distribution of the transverse shear strains through the plate thickness and satisfies the shear stress-free boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate, therefore, it does not require problem dependent shear correction factor. The governing equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle and solved via Navier-type to obtain closed form solutions. The numerical results of non-dimensional natural frequencies obtained by using the present theory are presented and compared with those of other theories available in the literature to verify the validity of present solutions. It can be concluded that the present refined theory is accurate and efficient in predicting the natural frequencies of isotropic, orthotropic and laminated composite plates.

  • This study developed a novel augmented reality interface for minimally invasive surgery. The augmented reality technique can alleviate the sensory feedback problem inherent to laparoscopic surgery. An augmented reality system merges real laparoscope image and reconstructed 3D patient model based on diagnostic medical image such as CT, MRI data. By using reconstructed 3D patient model, AR interface could express structure of patient body that is invisible outside visual field of laparoscope. Therefore, an augmented reality system improved sight information of limited laparoscope. In our augmented reality system, the laparoscopic view is located at the center of a wide-angle concave screen and reconstructed 3D patient model is displayed outside the laparoscope. By using a joystick, the laparoscopic view and the reconstructed 3D patient model view are changed concurrently. With our augmented reality system, the surgeon can see the peritoneal cavity from a wide angle of view, without having to move the laparoscope. Since the concave screen serves immersive environments, the surgeon can feel as if she is in the patient body. For these reasons, a surgeon can recognize easily depth information about inner parts of patient and position information of surgical instruments without laparoscope motion. It is possible for surgeon to manipulate surgical instruments more exact and fast. Therefore immersive augmented reality interface for minimally invasive surgery will reduce bodily, environmental load of a surgeon and increase efficiency of MIS.

  • Leaf area index (LAI) is important in explaining the ability of the crop to intercept solar energy for biomass production and in understanding the impact of crop management practices. This paper describes a procedure for estimating LAI as a function of image-derived vegetation indices from temporal series of IKONOS, Landsat TM, and MODIS satellite images using empirical models and demonstrates its use with data collected at Missouri field sites. LAI data were obtained several times during the 2002 growing season at monitoring sites established in two central Missouri experimental fields, one planted to soybean (Glycine max L.) and the other planted to corn (Zea mays L.). Satellite images at varying spatial and spectral resolutions were acquired and the data were extracted to calculate normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) after geometric and atmospheric correction. Linear, exponential, and expolinear models were developed to relate temporal NDVI to measured LAI data. Models using IKONOS NDVI estimated LAI of both soybean and corn better than those using Landsat TM or MODIS NDVI. Expolinear models provided more accurate results than linear or exponential models.

  • We have investigated anamorphic prism lenses with distortions of 0.3-0.5%. We designed the plastic triangular lens and confirmed the minimum resolution using MTF graphs. Also we confirmed that the SVGA optical system can realize a resolution of $864{\times}648$ 56 megapixels. A distortion of about 0.5% aberration appears in the maximum field, and a finite beam aberration of about $15{\mu}m$ is confirmed. We made a mold based on the design data and completed the prism lens through exodus molding. We confirmed the shape error (< $30{\mu}m$) and surface roughness (> 40 nm) of the three sides. We made the video-information-display prototype glasses using prism lens by measuring the performance, we determined the distortion aberration (0.3%) and SVGA resolution. Our approach will enable fabrication of a portable large-screen display device for glasses and sunglasses for the domestic market and, after 2015, for the world market.

  • Purpose: The orbital fat buldging may cause irregular contour of lower eyelid, which is not youthful appearance. The conventional method of fat excision may cause the eyeball to move backward and downward, making enopthalmia is inevitable. The transcutaneous approach to reach the orbital septum can increase the risks of scleral show resulting from scarification at the level of the septum orbicularis junction and damaging the vertical motor branches of the preseptal orbicularis oculi muscle of the lower eyelid. Method: From July 2007 to March 2008, total of 21 patients underwent transconjunctival capsulopapebral fascia fixation procedure. In 8 patients, the herniated fat pad of the lower eyelid was relocated back into the orbit without external skin excision using capsulopalpebral fascia fixation. But in 13 patients, excision of redundant skin of the lower eyelid was performed using pinching technique, not involving orbicularis oculi muslce. In 5 patients, lateral canthotomy was done bilaterally for good visual field. In 6 patients, lateral canthopexy was also combined to correct loosening of lower eyelid. Results: Most of the patients were satisfied after at least 5 months of follow up. No patient showed scleral show. But 2 patients complained of undercorrection slightly, without secondary operation in 1 patient and re - capsulopalpebral fascia fixtation through transconjunctival approach in another patient. Conclusion: Orbital fat repositioning using transconjunctival capsulopalpebral fascia fixation is a good procedure to show youthful appearance without increasing the risk of scleral show and also showed fast recovery compared to the conventional transcutaneous approach.

  • Since early 90's, the solar X-ray telescopes such as Yohkoh SXT and Hinode XRT have observed coronal magnetic structures on the Sun's surface in the range of about $40'{\times}40'$ field-of-view (FOV) covering the full solar disk. Thus it has been stressed by the scientists that the optical structure of solar telescopes should be designed with care for improving the uniformity over a wide FOV. There would be, however, no unique solution in designing the optical system of a telescope for overcoming perfectly the problem of off-axis response variation. As a consequence, the correction of optical imperfectness of telescopes has become an important calibration step that should be performed beforehand when the observed images are to be used for photometric purposes. In particular, a special care should be taken when performing the temperature analysis with thin and thick filters for flaring activities observed at the periphery of the full FOV. From the analyses of both pre-launch calibration and in-flight observation data, the optical characteristics for describing the performance of solar X-ray telescopes, especially in view of their energy dependence, will be introduced and discussed in our presentation.

  • A moving-coil-type linear motor, designed and fabricated, is consisted of the NdFeB permanent magnets with high specific energy as the stator, a coil-wrapped nonmagnetic hollow rectangular structure and an iron core as a pathway for magnetic flux. The interaction between permanent magmet and armature fie1d, so called "push/pull effect", is to shift the airgap flux density variation due to the magnet alone by a certain amount. Thrust therefore is shift downward or upward. The push/pull effect was presented through the FEM analysis and the static tests. We compared the thrust obtained through the FEM analysis with the static tests. Finally, we present the linearity and correction coefficients of the thrust in consideration of the push/pull effects.l effects.

  • It is important for advanced active safety systems and autonomous driving cars to get the accurate estimates of the nearby vehicles in order to increase their safety and performance. This paper proposes a sensor fusion method for radar and vision sensors to accurately estimate the state of the preceding vehicles. In particular, we performed a study on compensating for the lateral state error on automotive radar sensors by using a vision sensor. The proposed method is based on the Interactive Multiple Model(IMM) algorithm, which stochastically integrates the multiple Kalman Filters with the multiple models depending on lateral-compensation mode and radar-single sensor mode. In addition, a Probabilistic Data Association Filter(PDAF) is utilized as a data association method to improve the reliability of the estimates under a cluttered radar environment. A two-step correction method is used in the Kalman filter, which efficiently associates both the radar and vision measurements into single state estimates. Finally, the proposed method is validated through off-line simulations using measurements obtained from a field test in an actual road environment.

  • The robot systems are widely used in the many industrial field as well as welding manufacturing. The essential tasks to operate the welding robot are the acquisition of the position and/or shape of the parent metal. For the seam tracking or the robot tracking, many kinds of contact and non-contact sensors are used. Recently, the vision is most popular. In this paper, the development of the system which measures the shape of the welding part is described. This system uses the line-type structured laser diode and the vision sensor. It includes the correction of radial distortion which is often found in the image taken by the camera with short focal length. The Direct Linear Transformation (DLT) method is used for the camera calibration. The three dimensional shape of the parent metal is obtained after simple linear transformation. Some demos are shown to describe the performance of the developed system.
