  • Lanekeeping assistance has the potential to save thousands of lives every year by preventing accidental road departure. This paper presents experimental validation of a potential field lanekeeping assistance system with quantitative performance guarantees. The lanekeeping system is implemented on a 1997 Corvette modified for steer-by-wire capability. With no mechanical connection between the hand wheel and road wheels the lanekeeping system can add steering inputs independently from the driver. Implementation of the lanekeeping system uses a novel combination of a multi-antenna Global Positioning System (GPS) and precision road maps. Preliminary experimental data shows that this control scheme performs extremely well for driver assistance and closely matches simulation results, verifying previous theoretical guarantees for safety. These results also motivate future work which will focus on interaction with the driver.

  • It is very rare to conduct an experimental design with a single objective in mind. since we have uncertainties in model and its assumptions. Basically we have three approaches in literature to handle this problem, the mini-max, compound, constrained experimental design. Since Cook and Wong (1994) announced the equivalence between the compound and the constrained design, many constrained experimental design approaches have adopted the approximate design algorithm of compound experimental design. In this paper we attempt to modify the row-exchange algorithm under exact experimental design setting, not approximate experimental design one. This attempt will provide more realistic design setting for the field experiment. In this process we proposed another criterion on how to set the constrained experimental design. A graph to show the general issue of infeasibility, which occurs quite often in constrained experimental design, is suggested.

  • For a design of on/off solenoid actuator for valve actuating, designer must have the experimental knowledge as well as general electromagnetic formulas to design object. It is possible for theoretical knowledge to do the out-line design, but it is impossible to optimal design without experimental knowledge which only can be achieved through many repeated experiments. In addition, in present on/off type solenoid actuator field, the smaller, lightening, lower consumption power, high response time are effected as the most important design factor. So, experimental knowledge is more needed for optimal design of solenoid actuator. In this study, we derived the governing equations for optimal design of on/off solenoid actuator for valve actuating and developed a design program composed electromagnetic theories and experimental parameter values for inexperienced designers. And we proved the propriety of this program by experiments.

  • Randomized block design (RBD) with three replication is very frequently adopted in agricultural experiments of the Rural Development Administration of Korea. Even though it works well in field trials of traditional crops, it may not accomodate trial site conditions and/or experimental environment. In this research report, we deal with two such cases. The first case is for a crop experiment in green houses. In house conditions, RBD may not be appropriate since it cannot reflect two directions of the yield gradient. So, a Latin square design is suggested as an alternative. The second case is for local field experiments of the newly-inbred rice. RBD with three replications is used without doubt for decades, even though the site layout is not appropriately shaped for the design. In this case, we suggest the RBD in two blocks with multiple replicates for control varieties as an alternative. To improve the quality of statistical experimental designs in over one-thousand agricultural trials performed annually in the Rural Development Administration, we need to re-train agricultural researchers on the design and analysis of experiments and call for concerns of Korean statisticians.

  • Effects on tractive performance of design parameters of cage wheel as a traction aid to driving tires of tractor in wet paddy field were investigated experimentally. an experimental cage wheel was designed so that the design parameters such as wheel diameter, wheel width, lug pitch and lug angle could be varied during traction test, The traction test was conducted in two different types of wet paddy field ; shallow and deep harpan fields . Experimental results showed that tractive performance is affected by both soil conditions and the design parameters. A considerable improvement on the tractive performance was obtained by using a cage wheel with 45$^{\circ}$ lug angle in shallow hardpan and smaller lug pitch in deep hardpan. The diameter of cage wheel was mostly influential to the tractive performance both in shallow and deep hardpans.

  • As a regenerated turbulent wind field process, wind tunnel test has proven to be a promising approach for investigating the transmission tower-line system (TTLS) performance in view of experimental scaled models design, simulation techniques of wind field, and wind induced responses subjected to typhoon. However, the challenges still remain in using various wind tunnels to regenerate turbulent wind field with considerable progress having been made in recent years. This review paper provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of the wind tunnel based on active or passive controlled simulation techniques. Specific attention and critical assessment have been given to: (a) the design of experimental scaled models, (b) the simulation techniques of wind field, and (c) the responses of TTLS subjected to typhoon in wind tunnel. This review concludes with the research challenges and recommendations for future research direction.

  • This study concentrates on the relationship between the early 20th century italian artists and their works in the field of clothing design. They advocated the creation of art for life and introduced a new type of work of art which I will call 'experimental clothing for art'. The experimental clothing for art showed its dynamic characteristics in the field s of line and form, color, pattern, and material. The Italian artists made simple and functionalistic dresses, using asymmetric, geometric cuts. in pattern making. They employed dynamic patterns in textile design and favored brilliant colors which they debunked as storage and traditional. With regard to material, they used unusual materials such as metal, net, wire, and paper and inexpensive materials. To investigations of the visual expression of experimental clothing for art in Italy have led us to the internal expressions which are avant-garde, dynamic & speed, functionality & popularity, ephemeral & transformable, and warlike. As a result of the reflection of the times and the artists's will and roles the experimental clothing for art in Italy implicated contemporary clothing in the early twentieth century and it was only laboratory art that underwent various experiments in canvas but a model of efforts for the at of living, which was anti-traditional. It offered a new future and created a new environment. It is left for future research how the experimental clothing for art developed in countries other than Italian.

  • To develop electrically reliable high voltage apparatuses, the experimental study on the electrical breakdown field strength is needed, as well as theoretical approach. In this paper, lightning impulse breakdown characteristics considering utilization factors are investigated for the establishment of insulation design criteria of an high voltage apparatus. The utilization factors are represented as the ratio of mean electric field to maximum electric field. Dielectric experiments are performed by using five kinds of sphere-plane electrode systems made of stainless steel. As a result, it is found that dielectric characteristics are affected by not only gap length but also utilization factor of electrode systems. The results are expected to be applicable to the design of high voltage apparatuses.

  • Air-cored superconducting synchronous generator(ASSG) is characterized by an air-cored machine with its rotor iron and stator iron teeth removed. For this reason, in the case of the shape optimum design of ASSG, other design variables different from an iron-cored machine should be considered, which will lead to substantial improvement on the performance. The major design variables that are considered by using Three-dimensional Finite element Method(3D FEM) in this paper are : 1) field coil width, 2) axial length of magnetic shield, and 3) armature winding method. End-ring of armature winding is considered in the calculation of EMF. When it comes to field coil width, as field coil width enlarges, its effective field increases but the maximum field on the superconductor decreases. this determines the critical current density. this study presents an effective field coil width, axial length of magnetic shield, and armature winding method, and also the analysis is verified by the experimental results.
