  • In this study, we investigated the effect of fiber alignment in helicoidal structure on the mechanical properties of biomimetic fiber-reinforced composites. Using finite element analysis, circular biomimetic fiber composites were designed and studied. Various amounts of pressure loads were applied to a surface of the composites, and then bending and failure behaviors of the composites were analyzed. The results showed various failure morphologies according to the orientation of the fibers, and it turned out that the fiber alignment in helicoidal structure significantly improved the bending strength of the composite under pressure loading. This was because the fiber alignment in various directions for each layer dispersed effectively the fracture energy from the external load into multiple directions.

  • In this work, phenolic resins containing conductive carbon fillers, such as, petroleum coke, carbon black, and graphite, were used to improve the surface heating elements by impregnating a pitch-based carbon paper. The influence of conductive carbon fillers on physicochemical properties of the carbon paper was investigated through electrical resistance measurement and thermal analysis. As a result, the surface resistance and interfacial contact resistivity of the carbon paper were decreased linearly by impregnating the carbon fillers with phenol resins. The increase of carbon filler contents led to the improvement of electrical and thermal conductivity of the carbon paper. Also, the heating characteristics of the surface heating element were examined through the applied voltage of 1~5 V. With the applied voltage, it was confirmed that the surface heating element exhibited a maximum heating characteristic of about $125.01^{\circ}C$(5 V). These results were attributed to the formation of electrical networks by filled micropore between the carbon fibers, which led to the improvement of electrical and thermal properties of the carbon paper.

  • This paper investigated and validated the mechanisms and principles for constructing reticular structure of plant fiber through frothing solution approach. After process, plant fibers became low-density reticular-structured block with all properties meeting Chinese standards for cushion packing materials. The bonds between fibers acted as knots in a truss and were strong enough to keep space occupied by bubbles in the frothing solution from shrinking in the subsequent draining process. The formation of the reticular structure depends mainly on the pressure difference between inside and outside bubble, the effect of surface adsorbent force on bubble film, and hydrogen bond among fiber hydroxide.

  • In this study, cotton fibers were coated with a different weight percentage of octadecyl dimethyl(3-triethoxy silylpropyl) ammonium chloride(ODDMAC) to improve antimicrobial and water repellent properties. First, the ODDMAC dissolved in ethanol to prepare a solution. Then the cotton fibers were immersed in the ODDMAC/ethanol solution for 10 minutes at ambient temperature and dried at 80℃ for 3 minutes followed by curing. The treated cotton fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The treated cotton fibers revealed sufficient antimicrobial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae(ATCC 4352) and Staphylococcus aureus(ATCCBAA-1707). The hydrophobic nature of the treated cotton fibers was characterized by contact angle measurement. The results showed that the cotton fibers treated with the ODDMAC showed excellent hydrophobic properties which improved to 121°.

  • Silver has antibacterial property on bacteria of about 650 kinds and has been well known as non-toxic and non-tolerance in natural state. Recently, silver has been applied disinfection and antibacterial property to everyday life as health foods, filter, and exclusion of pollution. Nano-sized silver particle have very small size (〈10nm) and wide surface area per unit volume. PE/PP nonwovens used as back sheet or coverstock of baby diaper, adult diaper, sanitary napkin, and wiper. (omitted)

  • For solving troubles happened during the drilling process with carbon fiber epoxy composite materials(CFRP) by using HSS drill, a few types of diamond gift electroplated drills are manufactured, and machinability of these drills is experimented with a variety of cutting speed and feed rate. These drills have some advantages of good wear resistant and the conception of grinding process. As a result, using of these drills improves both troubles being caused by tool wear and damage of exit surface depending on fiber stacking angle. It is desirable that cutting conditions for the cutting thickness per revolution must be set under 0.01mm when the size of a diamond grit is # 60 .approx. 80.

  • In this study, the hollow fibers from $TiO_2$ and various metal oxides additives were fabricated and characterized in order to remove the arsenic substance from a contaminated water. Experimental results showed the best arsenic adsorption performance from pristine $TiO_2$ hollow fibers. When metal oxides were added, the metal oxides reduced the acid sites on the surface of $TiO_2$ and the arsenic adsorption performance decreased. However, the long term arsenic adsorption performance was enhanced and showed better performance than that of using pristine $TiO_2$ hollow fibers when $Al_2O_3$ was added during the hollow fiber fabrication. In addition, the arsenic adsorption performance showed a high dependency on the specific surface area of hollow fibers. It was confirmed that the abundancy of Lewis and Bronsted acid sites provided was favorable for the arsenic adsorption. It was also demonstrated that commercially available $TiO_2$ powders can be an attractive candidate material for manufacturing hollow fibers for a small scale water treatment plant.

  • An experimental investigation is conducted to examine the behavior and cracking of steel fiberre-inforced concrete spandrel L-shaped beams subjected to combined torsion, bending, and shear. The experimental program includes 12 medium-sized L-shaped spandrel beams organized into two groups, namely, specimens with longitudinal reinforcing bars, and specimens with bars and stirrups. All cases are examined with 0%, 1%, and 1.5% steel fiber volume fractions and tested under two different loading eccentricities. Test results indicate that the torque to shear ratio has a significant effect on the crack pattern developed in the beams. The strain on concrete surface follows the crack width value, and the addition of steel fibers reduces the strain. Fibrous concrete beams exhibited improved overall torsional performance compared with the corresponding non-fibrous control beams, particularly the beams tested under high eccentricity.

  • Electrostatic spinning or electrospinning has been recently paid attention to prepare ultrafine fiber mats which are composed of diameters in a range of submicrons to nanoscale size[l]. Due to small diameters and porous structure, electrosun fibers have a high specific surface area and expected to use for broad applications, such as filters, membranes, wound dressing materials, artificial blood vessels. a nonwoven fabric, a reiforcement of nanocomposites[2,3], etc. (omitted)

  • The one-way (two-way) flexural strength of RCC prisms (circular slabs) reinforced with glass fiber textiles is addressed. To this end, alkaline-resistant glass fiber textiles with three surface weights were used in the composite, the matrix concrete was designed with zero/nonzero slump, and the textiles were used with/without an intermediate layer provided by epoxy resin and sand mortar. Prisms were tested under a four-point loading apparatus and circular slabs were placed on simple supports under a central load. Effects of the amount and geometry of reinforcement, matrix workability, and the intermediate layer on the ultimate load and deflection were investigated. Results revealed that, with a specific reinforcement amount, there is an optimum textile tex for each case, depending on the matrix mix design and the presence of intermediate layer. Similar results were obtained in one-way and two-way bending tests.
