  • Background: Fibers have been used in cement mixture to improve its toughness, ductility, and tensile strength, and to enhance the cracking and deformation characteristics of concrete structural members. The addition of fibers into conventional reinforced concrete can enhance the structural and functional performances of safety-related concrete structures in nuclear power plants. Methods: The effects of steel and polyamide fibers on the shear resisting capacity of a prestressed concrete containment vessel (PCCV) were investigated in this study. For a comparative evaluation between the shear performances of structural walls constructed with conventional concrete, steel fiber reinforced concrete, and polyamide fiber reinforced concrete, cyclic tests for wall specimens were conducted and hysteretic models were derived. Results: The shear resisting capacity of a PCCV constructed with fiber reinforced concrete can be improved considerably. When steel fiber reinforced concrete contains hooked steel fibers in a volume fraction of 1.0%, the maximum lateral displacement of a PCCV can be improved by > 50%, in comparison with that of a conventional PCCV. When polyamide fiber reinforced concrete contains polyamide fibers in a volume fraction of 1.5%, the maximum lateral displacement of a PCCV can be enhanced by ~40%. In particular, the energy dissipation capacity in a fiber reinforced PCCV can be enhanced by > 200%. Conclusion: The addition of fibers into conventional concrete increases the ductility and energy dissipation of wall structures significantly. Fibers can be effectively used to improve the structural performance of a PCCV subjected to strong ground motions. Steel fibers are more effective in enhancing the shear performance of a PCCV than polyamide fibers.

  • Due to the construction difficulties of steel reinforced concrete (SRC), a new composite structure of steel and steel fiber reinforced concrete (SSFRC) is proposed for solving construction problems of SRC. This paper aims to investigate the bond properties and composition of interfacial bond stress between steel and steel fiber reinforced concrete. Considering the design parameters of section type, steel fiber ratio, interface embedded length and concrete cover thickness, a total of 36 specimens were fabricated. The bond properties of specimens were studied, and three different methods of calculating interfacial bond stress were analyzed. The results show: relative slip first occurs at the free end; Bearing capacity of specimens increases with the increase of interface embedded length. While the larger interface embedded length is, the smaller the average bond strength is. The average bond strength increases with the increase of concrete cover thickness and steel fiber ratio. And calculation method 3 proposed in this paper can not only reasonably explain the hardening stage after the loading end curve yielding, but also can be applied to steel reinforced high-strength concrete (SRHC) and steel reinforced recycled coarse aggregate concrete (SRRAC).

  • In this paper, a design equation for the punching shear capacity of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) slabs is proposed based on the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) standard specifications. Addition of steel fibers into concrete improves mechanical behavior, ductility, and fatigue strength of concrete. Previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of fiber reinforcement in improving the shear behavior of reinforced concrete slabs. In this study, twelve SFRC slabs using hooked-ends type steel fibers are tested with varying fiber dosage, slab thickness, steel reinforcement ratio, and compressive strength. Furthermore, test data conducted by earlier researchers are involved to verify the proposed design equation. The proposed design equation addresses the fiber pull-out strength and the critical shear perimeter changed by the fiber factor. Consequently, it is confirmed that the proposed design equation can predict the punching shear capacity of SFRC slabs with an applicable accuracy.

  • Since concrete has a low tensile strength compared to the compressive strength, reinforced concrete flexural members represent easy crack occurance under a small load. In order to overcome this problem, steel fiber reinforced concrete has been developed to compensate the tensile strength and brittleness of members. However, in the design formula of the domestic building code, it is not specified in the design formula reflecting the material characteristics. Therefore, the field application of the steel fiber reinforced concrete have had many restrictions. In this study, a flexural tensile strength model of steel fiber reinforced concrete is proposed by collecting and analyzing the material properties of material test results conducted by various researchers, and verified by the test results of cracking and stiffness evaluation of flexural members based on the proposed model. As a result of this study, the flexural tensile strength model of steel fiber reinforced concrete which can reflect the mixing ratio and aspect ratio of the steel fiber was proposed and the validity of the proposed material model equation was evaluated from the load-deflection relationship in the flexural test of the slab member.

  • Currently, many high-rise buildings are built in Korea for land-efficient utilization and vista. In high-rise buildings this tall, the use of high-strength concrete is essential to reduce the cross-section of structure members and secure axial load. However, this high strength concrete is vulnerable to spalling by fire, due to the water vapor pressure caused by the very high temperature in fire. To prevent this, the main method used is to reinforce the concrete with fiber. However, there has been little research on the pumpability of fiber reinforced high strength concrete. For this reason, this study features a performance review based on the properties and pumpability of fiber reinforced high strength concrete. In addition, the parameter of rheology was measured by extracting mortar from the concrete, and friction factor was measured through a 400 m horizontal pipe pumping test using the fiber reinforced high strength concrete. The basic information on fiber reinforced high strength concrete that we obtain through the experiments and review will contribute to the field.

  • This study examines shear capacity performance and structural characteristics of reinforced concrete beam using carbon fiber sheet(CFS), g)ass fiber sheet(GFS), glass fiber steel plate(GSP) and carbon fiber bar CB) which are reinforcing materials for reinforced concrete beam in order to produce similar condition to repair and reinforce actual structure and aims to provide data available In designing and constructing reinforced concrete structures under the structural damage. This study obtains the following conclusions. After considering the shear experiment results. it was indicated that the CB reinforced test object was the best in the shear capacity improvement and ductility capacity as it was contained in the concrete and was all operated, Also, GFS reinforced test object indicated the reduced flexural capacity but good shear capacity. GSP reinforced test object had bigger reinforcing strength than other reinforcing test objects. On the other hand, it showed the lowest reinforcement effect as compared section thickness of reinforced material because it showed the bigger relativity a section thickness of reinforced material. If the adherence to the concrete is improved, it will seem to show bigger reinforcement effect.

  • Concrete beams reinforced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars exhibit large deflection and crack width as compared to concrete beams reinforced steel due to modulus of elasticity of FRP bars. Current design code for prediction and crack width developed in concrete structures reinforced with steel bars may not be used for concrete beams reinforced with FRP bars. Thus a number of researcher have attempted to propose modifications to the ACI 318 empirical equation for estimating the effective moment of inertia of reinforced concrete beams. Others used numerical method to calculate the deflection. The purpose of this paper is to evaluation of methods of ACI 440.1 R-01, ISIS Canada design manual, and others for predicting deflection for glass fiber reinforced polymer reinforced concrete beams.

  • This paper addresses the results of an experimental study involving 10 partially encased composite columns under concentric and eccentric compressive loads. Parameters such as slenderness ratio, ordinary reinforced concrete and fiber reinforced concrete, load eccentricity and bending axis were investigated. The specimens were tested to investigate the effects of replacing the ordinary reinforced concrete by fiber reinforced concrete on the load capacity and behavior of short and slender composite columns. Various characteristics such as load capacity, axial strains behavior, stiffness, strains on steel and concrete and failure mode are discussed. The main conclusions that may be drawn from all the test results is that the behavior and ultimate load are rather sensitive to the slenderness of the columns and to the eccentricity of loading, specially the bending axis. Experimental results also indicate that replacing the ordinary reinforced concrete by steel fiber reinforced concrete has no considerable effects on the load capacity and behavior of the short and slender columns and the proposed replacement presented very good results.
