Linearly Polarized 1-kW 20/400-㎛ Yb-doped Fiber Laser with 10-GHz Linewidth (선편광된 10 GHz 선폭의 1 kW급 20/400-㎛ 이터븀 첨가 광섬유 레이저)

  • We have developed a linearly polarized high-power Yb-doped fiber laser in the master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) scheme for efficient spectral beam combining. We modulated the phase of the seed laser by pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS), with the bit length optimized to suppress stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), and subsequently amplified seed power in a 3-stage amplifier system. We have constructed by coiling the polarization-maintaining (PM) Yb-doped fiber, with core and cladding diameters of 20 ㎛ and 400 ㎛ respectively, to a diameter of 9-12 cm for suppression of the mode instability (MI). Finally, we obtained an output power of 1.004 kW with a slope efficiency of 83.7% in the main amplification stage. The beam quality factor M2 and the polarization extinction ratio (PER) were measured to be 1.12 and 21.5 dB respectively. Furthermore, the peak-intensity difference between the Rayleigh signal and SBS signal was observed to be 2.36 dB in the backward spectra, indicating that SBS is successfully suppressed. In addition, it can be expected that the MI does not occur because not only there is no decrease in slope efficiency, but also the beam quality for each amplified output is maintained.

  • Experimental demonstration of bipolar spectral encoding code-division multiple-access with modified pseudorandom noise codes is presented. Bipolar spectral encoding is achieved with an erbium-doped fiber amplifier amplified spontaneous emission source and arrayed waveguide gratings. The bit-error rate performance of 1.25 Gbps signal transmission over 80 km single mode fiber is measured in a multiple-user environment.

  • We developed 60 GHz analog optical transmitter modules for radio-over-fiber (RoF). They were consisted of an electroabsorption modulator (EAM), impedance matching circuit, and amplifier. The characteristics of fabricated modules were investigated by measuring the signal-to-noise ratio and the noise figure of the 60 GHz RoF link.

Effect of Optical Delay on the Suppression of the Power Transient Excursion in a Combined Gain-Controlled Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier

  • This report describes the effect of optical delay on the suppression of the power transient excursion in a combined gain-controlled erbium-doped fiber amplifier with an internal optical feedback loop (OFL). A simple homogeneous model showed that the optical delay caused a phase change in the oscillation of the surviving and laser channels, which resulted in a reduction of the overall power transient excursion. In addition to the reduction, a real system with a 1528.7-nm OFL shifted the oscillation upward or downward according to channel removal or addition, whereas another one with a 1560.9-nm OFL did not. This different transient behavior reflected a control-wavelength dependence on optical automatic gain control, where spectral-hole burning dominated over relaxation oscillation for 1528.7 nm, and vice versa for 1560.9 nm.

  • We have experimentally observed and theoretically analyzed the gain dependent optimum repetition rates of a hybrid-type active and passive mode locked laser pulses in an erbium-doped fiber laser of the figure-of-eight geometry by utilizing a nonlinear amplifier loop mirror (NALM) as a saturable absorber and a directional-coupler type electro-optic modulator as an active mode locker. Transform-limited mode-locked pulses of about 10 ps width were obtained at repetition rates which correspond to harmonics of the cavity fundamental frequency and depend on the optical amplifier gain in the NALM.

  • 1.3$mu extrm{m}$ 대역에서 증폭특성을 갖는 광섬유 증폭기인 Praseodymium-doped fiber amplifier(PDFA)는 Ohishi 등에 의해서 처음으로 제안되었다. 수십 nm의 이득 대역폭을 갖고, 30dB 이상의 높은 신호 이득을 갖는 PDFA는 1.3~l.6$\mu\textrm{m}$에 이르는 광대역 WDM을 위한 중요한 증폭기로 사용되고 있다. 최근에는 1.3~1.6$\mu\textrm{m}$에 이르는 광대역 WDM을 위해 광섬유 증폭기의 이득을 shift시키고, 이득 평탄화를 위한 많은 연구가 진해되어 지고 있으나, 광섬유 내에서 초고속의 광 신호를 증폭 시 발생할 수 있는 상호채널 간섭, 상호변조 왜곡, bit rate 높은 펄스열의 증폭 시 발생할 수 있는 이득소멸(gain depletion)과 이득회복(gain recovery) 등과 같은 과도응답 현상에 관한 연구는 충분히 보고되어있지 않다.   • 본 연구는 파장 분할 다중화(WDM:Wavelength Division Multiplexing) 방식 전송 시스템 (Transmission System)에 사용되는 어븀 첨가 광섬유 증폭기(EDFA : Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier)의 이득 제어(Gain Control) 방법에 관한 것으로 어븀 첨가 광섬유에서 상호 이득 포화(Cross Gain Saturation) 현상, 이득 비동질 (Gain In-homogeneity) 특성, 그리고 어븀 이온의 밀도 반전(Population Inversion)의 변화 에 의해 출력되는 다 파장 광 신호들의 광 세기가 각기 다르게 출력되는 현상을 고출력을 내도록 구성된 어븀 첨가 광섬유 증폭기와 고속 제어기를 구성하여 위 현상들을 억제하며 이득을 제어하기 위한 레이저 다이오드(Laser Diode : LD)의 제어전압 조사하고, 얻어진 결과들을 토대로 이득 제어에 적합한 방법을 제시하고 제어기를 설계한다.

  • The pair-induced quenching (PIQ) effect in a highly doped bismuth oxide-based erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) was theoretically and experimentally investigated. In the theoretical investigation, the bismuth oxide-based EDFA was modeled as a 6-level amplifier system that incorporated clustering-induced concentration quenching, cooperative up-conversion, pump excited state absorption (ESA), and signal ESA. The relative number of paired ions in a highly doped bismuth oxide EDF was estimated to be ~6.02%, determined by a comparison between the theoretical and the experimentally measured gain values. The impacts of the PIQ on the gain and the noise figure were also investigated.

  • To realize a desired characteristics of an optical transversal fitters, The number of optical amplifiers as same as the lentgh of a given transfer function is needed In this paper, we consider an optical transversal filter that uses only one fiber amplifier, which can realize a constant(=$\alpha$) times of a given transfer function with e as large as possible in order to make use of optical signal energy. Suppression of Output Distortion in a Gyroscope using Fiber Amplifier/Source by Tracking of Optimum Modulation Amplitude

  • We propose and demonstrate a new scheme for suppression of output distortion in an open-loop gyroscope employing an erbium-doped fiber amplifier/source (FAS). In addition to the main modulation for the rotation rate measurement, a small auxiliary modulation at a different frequency is used to extract an error signal, which is necessary for keeping the quasi-dc component of the feedback signal power at a constant level for varying rotation rate. By active tracking of the optimum modulation condition using this two-frequency modulation scheme, we obtain stable gyro output with suppressed distortion as well as stable FAS characteristics. We also calculate the distortion in the gyro response due to the feedback effect, from which we estimate the FAS gyro output distortion due to the residual ac feedback effect when the dc feedback effect is removed by the proposed scheme. The measured residual deviation agrees reasonably with the estimation.
