  • It is well known in the fracture mechanics community that the fracture toughness of brittle materials, such as ceramics, can be improved improves significantly when fibers are added into the material. This is because in presence of fibers the cracks cannot propagate as freely as it can in absence of them. Fibers bridge the gap between two adjacent surfaces of the crack and reduce the crack tip opening displacement, thus make it harder to propagate. Several investigators have experimentally studied how the length, diameter and volume fraction of fibers affect the fracture toughness of chopped strand reinforced matrix composite materials. In this paper, matrix used ALS, Arizona Lunar Simulant, types of fiber used carbon steels and stainless steels. To analyze quantitatively fiber reinforced ALS composites, experimental and analytical methods was progressed. Load-displacement curve is used to experimental method, and FEM analysis program using ABAQUS is used analytical method.

  • GFRP based composite rotor blades were developed for 750 kW & 2 MW wind turbines. The blade sectional geometry was designed to have a general shell-spar and shear web structure. For verifying the structural safety under all relevant extreme loads specified in the GL guidelines, the structural analysis of the rotor blades was performed using commercial FEM codes. The static load carrying capacity, blade tip deflections and natural frequencies were evaluated to satisfy the strength and stability requirements. Full-scale proof tests of rotor blades were carried out with optical fiber sensors for real-time condition monitoring. Finally, the prototype of each rotor blade passed all proof tests for GL certification.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a non-invasive blood glucose measurement method by a portable near infrared (NIR) system which was newly integrated by our lab. The portable NIR system includes a tungsten halogen lamp, a specialized reflectance fiber optic probe and a photo diode array type InGaAs detector; which was developed by a microchip technology based on the lithography. Reflectance NIR spectra of different parts of human body (finger tip, earlobe, and inner lip) were recorded by using a fiber optic probe. The spectra were collected over the spectral range 1100 ∼ 1740 nm. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was applied for the calibration and validation for the determination of blood glucose. The calibration model from earlobe spectra presented better results, showing good correlation with a glucose oxidase method which is a mostly used standard method. This model predicted the glucose concentration for validation set with a SEP of 33 mg/dL. This study indicated the feasibility for non-invasive monitoring of blood glucose by a portable near infrared system.

  • In composite materials, the fracture perpendicular to the fiber direction usually shows a non-linear behavior accompannying blunting and plastic deformation around the crack tip. In this study, the fracture thoughness in random short fiber SMC composite material and Carbon/Epoxy composite material is estimated by the A.M.(Area Method) and the G.L.M.(Generalized Locus Method) which can determine a stable total energy release rate(G$_T$) not only in highly elghly elastic material but also in highly non-linear materials.

  • This research develops a finite element code for the transient dynamic analysis of tapered fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) poles with hollow circular cross-section and flexible joints used in power transmission lines. The FRP poles are modeled by tapered beam elements and their flexible joints by a rotational spring. To solve the time equations of transient dynamic analysis, precise time integration method is utilized. In order to verify the utilized formulations, a typical jointed FRP pole under step, triangular and sine pulses is analyzed by the developed finite element code and also ANSYS commercial finite element software for comparison. Thereafter, the effect of joint flexibility on its dynamic behavior is investigated. It is observed that by increasing the joint stiffness, the amplitude of the pole tip deflection history decreases, and the time of occurrence of the maximum deflection is earlier.

  • This investigation deals with the process of field electron emission from composite microemitters. Tested emitters consisted of a tungsten or carbon-fiber core, coated with a dielectric material. Two coating materials were used: (1) Clark Electromedical Instruments Epoxylite resin and (2) Epidian 6 Epoxy resin (based on bisphenol A). Various properties of these emitters were measured, including the current-voltage characteristics, which are presented as Fowler-Nordheim plots, and the corresponding electron emission images. A field electron microscope with a tip (cathode) to screen (anode) distance of 10 mm was used to electrically characterize the emitters. Measurements were carried out under ultra-high vacuum conditions with a base pressure of $10^{-6}$ Pascal ($10^{-8}$ mbar).

  • A simple water level measurement method based on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is proposed and demonstrated. The measurement principle is based on the change of Fresnel reflection occurring at the end facet of the optical fiber tip (OFT). To increase the spatial resolution of water level sensing, a broadband light source (BLS) and an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) are employed. The OFTs are multiplexed with the dedicated wavelength channels of AWG. By measuring all of the reflection powers reflected at the OFTs with a proposed on-site reflectometer, the water level can be monitored continuously for a fast emergency response. Moreover, it can be implemented easily with the commercially available optical components and devices with the simple configuration.

  • Aluminum 5052/Aramid Fiber Reinforced Plastic(Al5052/AFRP) laminates are applied to the fuselage-wing intersection. The Al5052/AFRP laminates suffer from the cyclic bending moment of variable amplitude during the service. Therefore, the influence of cyclic bending moment on the delamination and the fatigue crack propagation behavior in Al5052/AFRP laminate was investigated in this study. Al5052/AFRP laminate composite consists of three thin sheets of Al5052 and two layers of unidirectional aramid fibers. The cyclic bending moment fatigue tests were performed with five different levels of bending moment. The shape and size of the delamination zone formed along the fatigue crack between Al5052 sheet and aramid fiber-adhesive layer were measured by an ultrasonic C-scan. The relationships between da/dN and ΔK, between the cyclic bending moment and the delamination zone size, and between the fiber bridging mechanism and the delamination zone were studied. Fiber failures were not observed in the delamination zone in this study. It represents that the fiber bridging modification factor should turn out to increase and that the fatigue crack growth rate should decrease. The shape of delamination zone turns out to be semi-elliptic with the contour decreased non-linearly toward the crack tip.
