  • A mathematical model based on the water flow equation was developed with the Ohm's analogy and the partial differential equations. Simulation of water uptake was performed by numerically solving the equations with the aid of a differential equation solver, DGEAR in IMSL package, in FORTRAN version. The input data necessary were climatological parameters (temperature, solar radiation, humidity and wind speed). plant parametors (leaf water potential, leaf area, root conductivity and root length density) and soil parameters (hydraulic conductivity and The graphical comparison of the simulated and measured water contents as the functions of time showed good agreement, but there still was some disparity due to possible inacouracy of the field measured parameters. The simulated soil evaporation showed about 2 mm/day early in the growing period and dropped to about 0.4 mm/day as the full canopy developed and the soil water depleted. During the dry period, soil evaporation was as low as 0.1 mm/day. The transpiration was as high as 5mm/day. Deep percolation calculated from the flux between the 180-cm layer was about 0.2mm/day and became smaller with time. After the soil water of upper layers depleted, the flux reversed showing capillary rise. The rate of the capillary rise reached about 0.07mm/day, which was too low to satisfy water uptake of the root system. Therefore, to increase use of water in deep soil, expansion of the root system is necessary.

  • In order to establish a rational application method of potash to paddy rice(Oryza sativa L. Jinheung, a Japonica variety) field and pot experiments on split application of two rates (6kg and 12kg $K_2O$ per 10a) of potash at a certain critical growing stage have conducted in 1973 and the results were as follows: 1. At the treatment where a rate of 6kg $K_2O$ per 10a(lower dose) of potash was supplied in two split doses, a half at transplanting time and the other half at young panicle formation stage, the yield of paddy rice appeatred to be low due to less number of panicles per hill. (Field experiment) 2. The treatment where potash supply ceased at transplanting time or at effective tillering stage but supplied at the other two stages (including panicle initiation stage) have failed to increase K content in the flag leaf and have shown low maturity and low thousand grain weight, which resulted in low paddy rice yield. (pot experiment) 3. From above two facts, it is concluded that the application of potash at transplanting time is an important practice for the high yielding of paddy rice. 4. The application of lime seemed to stimulate later growth of paddy depressing the unnecessary increase of poor miserable tillers in early stages of growth.

  • This pot experiment was conducted to find out the optimal fertilization ratio of the anions (N : S : P) in various soil conditions. Soil samples were collected from uncultivated mountains and hills where development for grasslands is under consideration. The optimum ratios were computed by the $Hom{\grave{e}}s$ systematic variation technique. The results were summarized as follows : 1. The optimum fertilization ratios of the anions (N : S : P) for the high yields of grass - clover mixed sward at various areas were obtained (Table 5). 2. The grass yields in mixed sward were increased by the increase of specific soil characteristics, CEC, OM, T-N, avail-$P_2O_5$. However. it was not recognizable by the contents of the cations, the base saturation, and the pH. 3. The relatively high yields of clover were positively related to the Ca and Mg contents in soils, and it was a factor of the increased total yields of mixed sward. 4. The relatively high optimum fertilization ratios of S in volcanic ash soil in the Cheju district and P in sediment lithosol in Daegu should be taken into account in determing the fertilization rate for high yield of clover in mixed sward.

  • The study was performed to examine varietal differences of wilting injury in terms of the root developing system and root activity. The field survey was conducted at the farmer's, and the experimental fields. The experimental investigation was done at different growth stage of rice plant in the sand culture condition. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The T/R ratio of healthy plants was greater than that of the wilted plants in Yushin. 2. Regardless of plant parts, the root activity of the wilted plants decreased in Yushin. The T/R ratio of Yushin tended to increase at the vegitative stage while the Photosynthate distribution to root decreased at the later stage. 3. The root activity and the plant growth rate were higher at vegetative growth stage, while the root activity at reproductive stage decreased. 4. The root activity of Milyang 23, which has relatively less injury of wilting, did not significantly differ between the wilted and the healthy plants. The root was thick and T/R ratio was low.

  • The beneficial effects of mycorrhizal fungi on plant growth has largely been attributed to higher uptake of P and other mineral nutrients. However, the effects of mycorrhizal colonization on uptake of mineral nutrients are conflicting in various past investigations. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of P application rate on mycorrhizal colonization and nutrient uptake of Poncirus trifoliata (trifoliate orange) seedlings grown in non-cultivated volcanic ash soil of Cheju island. Five levels of P (40, 573, 1,106, 1,373. $1,640mg\;P\;kg^{-1}$) were applied with double superphosphate. Seedlings inoculated with mycorrhizal fungi were grown for 5 month in a greenhouse. As the level of P application increased, mycorrhizal colonization in the seedlings decreased, and the colonization was significantly reduced when available P was higher than $150mg\;P\;kg^{-1}$ levels. There was a significant correlation between mycorrhizal colonization and P uptake by trifoliate orange seedlings at lower P applications. The effectiveness of mycorrhiaze on P uptake was more significant at lower P applications. Uptake of N, K, Ca, Mg an Zn by trifoliate orange seedlings also increased as mycorrhizal colonization increased, but mycorrhizae could not enhance the uptake of Cu by trifoliate orange seedlings in volcanic ash soil of Cheju island.

  • To develope the enhanced bacterial strains capable of biodegradation for various chlorinated aromatic compounds, 100 bacterial strains were isolated from soil samples of suburbs of Taejon, Cheongju, and Jeonju by the enrichment culture. These strains can degrade pentachlorophenol (PCP) which is a kind of wood preservatives. Nineteen strains of the isolates were selected by fast colony-forming rate on solid minimal media containing PCP as an only source of carbon and energy. These strains were identified to genus level. Fifteen strains were identified as Pseudomonas, 1 strain as Acinetobacter and 3 strains were not. Genus Alcaligenes strains were not found among them. Pseudomonas sp. MU135. MU139, MU163 and MU 184 were able to degrade for 4 kinds of chlorinated compounds, PCP, 2,4-D, MCPA and 3CB. Pseudomonas sp. If was observed that MU139 exhibits the highest degradability in liquid minimal media at 72 hours after inoculation. Pseudomoans sp. MU147, MU177, MU184 and MU192 also degraded the compounds at higher rates. As the results, Pseudomonas sp. MU139 and unidentified strain MU184 had biodegrability for broad range of chlorinated compounds and higher rates of degradation for PCP.

  • To investigate the absorption and transfer factor(TF) of Sr-85 by rice(Oryza sativa L.), experiments were carried out through pot cultivations on a sandy-loam soil treated 74 and 222Bq per gram of soil in a plastic film house. Sr-85 absorption rates of Ilpoombyeo, late maturing variety and Odaebyeo, early maturing variety, at harvesting stage, were 0.39-0.43% and 0.66-0.73%, respectively. Sr-85 absorption rates of Odaebyeo were about 1.5 times higher than those of Ilpoombyeo. Ratios of Sr-85 radiation and Sr-85 concentration in brown rice were much lower compared with those in straw and husk. Sr-85 concentrations in each part of Odaebyeo were remarkably higher than those of Ilpoombyeo. Transfer factor of Sr-85 from soil to plant ranged from 0.037 of brown rice to 4.13 of rice straw at harvesting stage. The order of the Sr-85 transfer factor in plant parts was straw>husk>brown rice. Sr-85 concentrations treated in soil had no effect on the growth and yield of rice.

  • The effect of different relative humidity(RH) of atmosphere on the uptake of calcium by tomato plant was investigated through an experiment in the protected cultivation system. The RH regime was imposed by humidifiying by humidifier in one plot, and by mulching the ridge to cut down the evaporation of water to lower the RH, in another plot. During the course of plant growth, RH in the humidified plot, at noon, was about 70%, while in non-humidufied plot, RH was about 50%. The humidification also resulted in the lowering of temperature significantly(by about, $3.1^{\circ}C$). This higher RH of atmosphere under humidifying treatment, resulted in the increase in the water efflux rate of root significantly(greater by 0.24g/g dry root/h than that under mulching treatment). Relatively severe occurrence of blossom end rot(23%) was observed in the humidifying treatment, while no such symptom occurred in mulching plot. The efflux rates of Ca, K and Mg were found to be higher in the humidifying plot. It was also observed that the concentrations of Ca, Mg and K in the xylem solution was 2-4 times higher than that of gydroponic solution. This suggested that the occurrence of blossom end rot, under high RH of atmosphere, would not be due to the decrease in the uptake of Ca per se, by tomato plant, but due to anomalies in the distribution of it within the plant.

  • Effect of soil moisture level on the growth of ginger plant was investigated through a pot experiment. The soil used for this study was collected from a newly reclaimed hillside land. The soil was a silty clay loam(19% sand, 57% of silt and 24% of clay), acidic in soil rection(pH 4.7, in $H_2O$) and low in organic matter content(1.2%). Soil moisture levels selected for the experiment were 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30% on weight basis. Under the soil moisture of 20-25%, the emergence ratio was 80-100%, 25 days alter planting. The performance of above ground parts was best under 20-25% of soil moisture. When the soil moisture content was far from 25%, high or low, the die out of above ground parts of ginger tended to increase. Under 20-25% of soil moisture the growth of roots was best and the occurrence of root rot was minimal.
