  • Methanol extracts of the aerial and rhizome parts obtained from ten species of ferns has been screened for antimicrobial activities against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Propionibacterium acnes, Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus. Antimicrobial activities were carried out using broth microdilution method and paper disc diffusion assay and the extracts which showed clear zones more than 15mm in concentration of 2 mg/disc were tested for its antimicrobial activities at the $0.125{\sim}2\;mg{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ concentration of each extract for three days. The non-sterilized crude methanol extracts of Osmunda cinnamomea var. fokiensis rhizome showed the highest antimicrobial activities on B. subtilis(39%), E. coli (33%) and L. monocytogenes(58%) at the concentration of $2\;mg{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ after 72 hours. In P. acnes, frond extract of O. cinnamomea var. fokiensis showed most vigorous antimicrobial activities in the all extracts but it showed weak activity(clear zone diameters below 15 mm). All extracts has the antimicrobial activities on Streptococcus, but they exhibited weak activity. At the concentration of $2\;mg{\cdot}mL^{-1}$, only Osmunda japonica rhizome extracts showed 28 and 39% of antimicrobial activities on S. mutans and S. sobrinus after 72 hours and the other extracts showed below 10% of antimicrobial activities on S. mutans and S. sobrinus.

  • U.S. Air Force Regulation 80-1 defines that a weapon system is composed of equipments, skills, and techniques, the composite of which ferns an instrument of combat. The complete weapon system includes all related facilities, equipments, materials, services, and personnels required for the operation of the system, so that the instrument of combat can be considered as a self-sufficient unit of striking power in its intended operational environment. Effectiveness of a weapon system can be expressed as a function of its liability, reliability and performance capability. Among these attributes which influence the weapon effectiveness, performance capability is considered to be the most critical factor for many weapon systems. In order to illustrate the application of the methodology of performance capability, a specific ease study on the effectiveness of Vulcan anti-air craft gun system is presented with special emphasis on hitting probability on moving targets, effects of artificial rounds dispersion, and several principles related to the deployment of the system. This thesis includes the thorough survey of the possibility of calculating the absolute value of hitting probability on moving targets, indicates that the effects of artificial rounds dispersion increase the value of probability only when the total number of rounds fired within fire range exceeds a certain critical number, and suggests that concentrated guns deployment is better than scattered deployment in order to obtain higher probability and lower average amount of rounds if it is assumed that the effects of counter-attack from enemy threats are not serious.

  • This study analyzed the status of climate-change indicator plants native to the main islands of the Korean peninsula, while elucidating their distribution characteristics. Information on flora from over 129 island locations, comprising more than 100 species of native plants, was collected, compiled into a database, and utilized as raw data. The distribution of 193 climate-change indicator plants was confirmed. The distribution area of broadleaf evergreen trees and ferns, including Mallotus japonicus and Cyrtomium falcatum, was relatively wide. In contrast, the distribution of common northern plants such as Corydalis turtschaninovii and Malus baccata was limited. If global warming persists, northern plant distribution is expected to decrease rapidly in the Korean Peninsula island region, while the northern limit line of the southern plants is expected to migrate further northward. During this process, it is likely that the plant congregation structure and species diversity within the island region will change dynamically. In this study, comparative analyses between species and regions were conducted by assessing the relative frequency of their occurrence, and six types of botanical geographic distribution patterns were noted.

  • This paper shows the application of P-N Learning [4] method in the soccer ball detection and improvement for increasing the speed of processing. In the P-N learning, the learning process is guided by positive (P) and negative (N) constraints which restrict the labeling of the unlabeled data, identify examples that have been classified in contradiction with structural constraints and augment the training set with the corrected samples in an iterative process. But for the long-view in the soccer game, P-N learning will produce so many ferns that more time is spent than other methods. We propose that color histogram of each frame is constructed to delete the unnecessary details in order to decreasing the number of feature points. We use the mask to eliminate the gallery region and Line Hough Transform to remove the line and adjust the P-N learning's parameters to optimize accurate and speed.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the environmental characteristics of natural habitats, and the genetic variations in samples from 19 different quadrates of Asplenium scolopendrium 10 habitats. The natural habitats of A. scolopendrium were located at an altitudes 110-973 m with inclinations of $7-30^{\circ}$. All the quadrates were located on north facing slopes. The average field capacity of the soil is 31.4%, with organic matter at 16.7%, and the pH is 5.84. The soil texture was confirmed as sandy loam in 8 habitats and silt loam in 2 habitats. A total of 214 vascular plants were identified from 10 habitats. The importance value of the herbaceous layer (H) was the highest in A. scolopendrium, at 10.4%, followed by Arachniodes standishii (7.3%), Dryopteris crassirhizoma (6.5%), and Polystichum tripteron (5.3%), which implies that the natural habitats of A. scolopendrium are affinity with ferns. The species diversity of A. scolopendrium was estimated as on average 1.09, while the dominance and evenness were 0.12 and 0.87, respectively. The result of the RAPD analysis, among 59 bands amplified with a primer, 25 (42.4%) showed polymorphism. Twenty-one individuals of 10 habitats could be classified into four groups with similarity coefficient values ranging from 0.74 to 1.0. Mt. Mullae and Geumdaebong populations shows basal branching within the 21 individuals. Ulleung-do island and Jeju-do island population forms an independent clade, respectively. Mt. Moak and Byeonsan-bando clade formed a sister to the Ulleung-do island and Jeju-do island clade.

  • Bracken fern [Pteridium aquilinem (L.) kuhn (Dennstaedtiaceae)] is one of the most common species on the planet. It has been consumed by humans and animals for centuries. Use by some human groups is because they believe bracken fern is good for health as plant medicine. However, it is also one of the few known plants that can cause tumors in farm animals. Many interested groups have focused their attention on bracken fern because of these interesting features. In order to evaluate the biological effects of exposure to this plant in cellular level, human cancer cell lines were treated with the fern dichloromethane extracts and the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects were studied. Anti-proliferative/cytotoxic effects were evaluated by cell count, MTT assay and flow cytometry methods with three different cancer cell lines, TCC, NTERA2, and MCF-7, and two normal cells, HDF1 and HFF3. Pro-apoptotic effects of the extracts were determined by DAPI staining and comet assay, on TCC cancer cells compared to the normal control cell lines. Cellular morphology was examined by light microscopy. Our present study showed that the extract caused DNA damage and apoptosis at high concentrations ($200{\mu}g/mL$) and also it may induce cell cycle arrest (G2/M phase) at mild concentrations (50 and $30{\mu}g/mL$) depending on the cell type and tumor origin. These results indicate that bracken fern extract is a potent source of anticancer compounds that could be utilized pharmaceutically.

  • Unrecorded fern species of Korean flora, Thelypteris interrupta (Willd.) K. Iwats. (Thelypteridaceae) and Dryopteris subexaltata (H. Christ) C. Chr. (Dryopteridaceae), were collected from Jeju island off the south coast of Korean peninsula and reported here. T. interrupta is most similar to T. acuminata (Houtt.) C. V. Morton in morphology, however, the two species are readily distinguishable by the plant color including rhizome, stipe base and spore, and the presence of glandular hair as well as the distribution pattern of sorus on lower leaf surface. D. subexaltata is also well distinguishable from its relatives, D. sparsa (D. Don) Kuntze, D. sabaei (Franch. & Sav.) C. Chr., and D. yakusilvicola Sa. Kurata by the presence of proliferation, shape of pinnae, distribution pattern of sori on lower leaf surface, and shape of indusium.
