Fenton’s oxidation process is one of the most commonly applied processes to the wastewater which cannot be treated by conventional biological treatment processes. However, it is necessary to minimize the cost of Fenton’s oxidation treatment by modifying the treatment processes or other means of chemical treatment. So, as a method for the chemical oxidation of biorefractory or nonbiodegradable organic pollutants, the Photo-Fenton-Reaction which utilizes iron(11)salt. $H_2O$$_2$ and UV-light simultaneously has been proprosed. Therfore, the purpose of this study is to test a removal efficiency of dye-wastewater and treatment cost with Fenton’s and Photo-Fenton’s oxidation process. The Fe(11)/$H_2O$$_2$ reagent is referred to as the fenton’s reagent. which produces hydroxy radicals by the interaction of Fe(11) with $H_2O$$_2$. In this exoeriment, the main results are as followed; 1. The Fenton oxidation was most efficient in the pH range of 3-5. The optimal condition for initial reaction pH was 3.5 for the high CO $D_{Cr}$ & TOC-removal efficiency. 2. The removal efficiency of TOC and CO $D_{Cr}$ increased up to the molar ration between ferrate and hydrogen peroxide 0.2:1, but above that ratio removal efficiency hardly increased. 3. The highest removal efficiency of TOC and CO $D_{Cr}$ were showed when the mole ration of ferrate to hydrogen peroxide was 0.2:3.4. 4. Without pretreatment process, photo-fenton oxidation which was not absorbed UV light was not different to fenton oxidation. 5. And Fenton oxidtion with pretreatment process was similar to Fenton oxidation in the absence of coagulation, the proper dosage of F $e^{2+}$: $H_2O$$_2$ was 0.2:1 for the optimal removal efficiency of TOC or CO $D_{Cr}$ .6. Also, TOC & CO $D_{Cr}$ removal efficiency in the photo-fenton oxidation with pretreatment was increased when UV light intensity enhanced.7. Optimum light intensity in the range from 0 to 1200 W/$m^2$ showed that UV-intensity with 1200W/$m^2$ was the optimum condition, when F $e_{2+}$:$H_2O$$_2$ ratio for the highest decomposition was 0.2:2.5.EX>$_2$ ratio for the highest decomposition was 0.2:2.5.
The purpose of this research is to evaluate the removal efficiencies of COD$\_$Cr/ and color for the dyeing wastewater by the different dosages of ferrous solution and H$_2$O$_2$ in Fenton process. In the case of H$_2$O$_2$ divided dosage for the Fenton's reagent 7:3 of H$_2$O$_2$ was more effective than 3:7 to remove COD$\_$Cr/ and color. The results showed that COD$\_$Cr/ was mainly removed by Fenton coagulation, where the ferric ions are formed in the initial step of Fenton reaction. On the other hand color was removed by Fenton oxidation rather than Fenton coagulation. The removal mechanism of COD$\_$Cr/ and color was mainly coagulation by ferrous ion, ferric ion and Fenton oxidation. The removal efficiencies were dependent on the ferric ion amount at the beginning of the reaction. However, the final removal efficiency of COD$\_$Cr/ and color was in the order of Fenton oxidation, ferric ion coagulation and ferrous ion coagulation. The reason of the highest removal efficiency by Fenton oxidation can be explained by the chain reactions with ferrous solution, ferric ion and hydrogen peroxide.

This research was carried out to evaluate role of supplementary reagents, such as phosphate and SDS, to remove hydrophobic organic contaminant from soils during the EK-Fenton process. The $H_2O$$_2$ stability improved due to the role as stabilizer of phosphate and SDS during the EK-Fenton process. Furthermore, although pH in region near cathode was 8.2 after test, $H_2O$$_2$ stability improved due to transportation of SDS in the region near cathode. Therefore, in tests using phosphate and SDS as supplementary reagent, the efficiency of phenanthrene treatment improved through the EK-Fenton process using longer reaction time.
Dyeing wastewater contains recalcitrant organics which can not be easily treated by conventional biological treatment. Therefore it has to be treated by other advanced oxidation process in order to remove COD and Color more efficiently. Fenton oxidation process is one of the most commonly applied processes in removal of COD and color for the dyeing wastewater. However it increase the treatment cost and the production of sludge by the use of the excessive chemical reagent. Ozonation is not suitable in Single treatment process because it is not effective in organics removal compared with Color removal. The purpose of this research in order to evaluate the comparable removal efficiency of COD and color by the combination of advanced oxidation processes for the dyeing wastewater. The sequential treatment processes of Fenton process and ozonation was more effective to remove organics and color than ozonation and Fenton process. The result of Fenton process for the pretreatment presented as the 81% removal of organics whereas ozonation process for the pretreatent presented as the 22.1% removal of organics. The removal of colour was higher as 81.3% for the ozonation as the pretreatment than 77.7% for the Fenton process as the pretreatment.
Fenton's oxidation can improve the biodegradability of refractory organic wastewater by generating $OH{\cdot}$ which is one of the most reactive species. Fenton's reagent is used to treat a variety of industrial waste containing a range of toxic organic compounds. But this process cannot be economical because of high chemical cost of $H_2O_2$, ferrous ion solution and high sludge disposal cost. In this study, we proposed a modified Fenton's oxidation process which can reduce the reagent cost and obtain better removal efficiencies with less Fenton's reagents, and have a good potential of sludge recycling. In modified Fenton reaction, ferrous ion solution is adjusted to optimal pH with NaOH. Then it added to the sample and reacted to $H_2O_2$. For the experiment, synthetic wastewater made of phenol, which is one of the typical water pollutants, was used and the ionic strength of this wastewater was controlled by adding $NaHCO_3$. The effects of DO, ionic strength, and $H_2O_2$ dosing methods were investigated. As a result, modified Fenton's treatment efficiencies are better than conventional Fenton's reaction treating leachate and dyeing wastewater. And modified Fenton's treatment efficiencies combined to the sludge recycling for a half of Iron dosage are as good as the conventional Fenton's for a normal Iron dosage.
The degradation of Nafion membrane by hydrogen peroxide was investigated in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Degradation tests were carried out in a solution of $10{\sim}30%$ hydrogen peroxide containing 4ppm $Fe^{2+}$ ion which is well known as Fenton's reagent at $80^{\circ}C$ for 48hr. Characterization of degraded membranes were examined through the IR, Water-uptake, Ion exchange capacity, mechanical strength and $H_2$ permeability. After degradation, C-F, S-O and C-O chemical bonds of membrane were broken by radical formed by $H_2O_2$ decomposition. Breaking of C-F bond which is the membrane backbone reduced the mechanical strength of Nafion membrane and hence induced pinholes, resulting in increase of $H_2$ crossover through the membrane. Also the decomposition of C-O and S-O, side chain and terminal bond of membrane, decreased the ion exchange capacity of the membrane.
Phenol, often discharged from petroleum and fine chemical industries is potential carcinogen and was classified into priority pollutant by EPA in USA. It causes serious environmental and health problem if discharged to the environment such as soil or aquifer. The removal efficiency of phenol and COD using Fenton treatment(Hydrogen Peroxide and Ferrous Sulfate) was observed and biodegradability (BOD$_{5}$/COD$_{cr}$) of reaction products were also examined. When 50 mg/l of phenol was treated by Fenton's Reagent(50 mg/l of hydrogen peroxide and 900 mg/l of ferrous sulfate), the removal efficiency of phenol and COD was 100% and 80% respectively in 10 minutes, which suggested this method can be used as actual phenol removal process. The initial biodegradability of 500 mg/l phenol solution was 0.7 but decreased as hydrogen peroxide was increased.
Many herbs have been used as therapeutics in Korean traditional medicine. In view of their clinical indications, anti-oxidant activity may contribute to their pharmacological effects. However, anti-oxidant information on these plants has not been available. In this study, seventy herbs which have been used in Korean traditional medicine were selected and screened for anti-oxidant activity using their water extracts. The anti-oxidant activity was assessed by their ability to inhibit three oxidation reactions; luminol/Fenton reagent, 2, 7-dichlorodihydrofluorescein(DCHF)/Fenton reagent and DCHF/peroxynitrite. In each assay, 70 herbs were divided into two groups; anti-oxidant group which inhibited the respective oxidation reaction and was majority(about 60 herbs), and pro-oxidant group which enhanced the oxidation reaction but was minority(more or less 10 herbs). When the herbs were listed in the order of their anti-oxidant strength, the orders obtained from each assay were found to be quite similar. The upper top rankers(more or less 10 herbs) in each assay showed strong activity compared to the others. The uppermost rankers in each assay were Rubus coreanus Miquel/Rubus schizostylus(覆盆子), Schisandra chinensis Baillon/Schizandra chinensis(五味子) and Terminalia chebula Retziusl Terminalia chebula(訶子). Of the pro-oxidant herbs, about 4-5 herbs were strongly pro-oxidant, which enhanced the control oxidation reactions to 150-300%. But the meaning of this observation is not known since few of them in one assay were also anti-oxidant in other assays. The results obtained in the present study may serve as information for understanding pharmacological effects of these herbs and developing new drugs from them.

The objectives of this study are to determine optimal operation condition of chemical coagulation with ferric chloride($FeCl_3$) and fenton reagent oxidation for effluents of a biological denitrification treatment and an existing lagoon treatment of landfill leachate, and to investigate the effect of alkalinity on fenton oxidation. In jar-tester, optimum dosage of ferric chloride for removal of COD was $1,500mgFe^{3+}/L$, removal efficiencies of $COD_{Cr}$ and $COD_{Mn}$ under this condition were about 55% and 64%, respectively. After chemical precipitation($1,500mgFe^{3+}/L$) of biological treatment effluent, optimum $Fe^{2+}/H_2O_2$ ratio of fenton oxidation was 1.5, the maximum removal efficiency of COD was about 80%, and optimum dosages of ferrous sulfate and hydrogen peroxide were $600mgFe^{2+}/L$ and $400mgH_2O_2/L$, respectively. The removal efficiency of COD was decreased as alkalinity was increased.
In order to treat the wastewater containing organic compound, pre-treatment system connected with MSP(molecular separation process) was investigated. With the aim of selecting an optimum process of Fenton's oxidation, removal efficiency of each process in the optimum reaction condition was recommended. The $Fe/H_{2}O_{2}$(ferric sulfate to hydrogen peroxide)reagent is referred to as the Fenton's regent, which produces hydroxyl radicals by the interaction of Fe with $H_{2}O_{2}$. The powerful oxidizing ability and extreme kinetic reactively of the hydroxyl radical was well established. Increasing dosage of $Fe/H_{2}O_{2}$ increased removal efficiency as molar ratio of $Fe/H_{2}O_{2}$ between 0.2 and 2.5. Optimum dosage of molar ratio was 1. The removal efficiency for reaction condition was increased as pH decreased when the molar ratio of $Fe/H_{2}O_{2}$ was 1.7. Fenton's oxidation was most efficient in the reaction time 35 min for complex wastewater. Also, coagulation aid experiments using kaolin resulted in 3% of kaolin dosage.
