  • Two-photon absorption coefficient of a series of dyes in polymer thin films was determined by measuring the femtosecond laser ablation threshold. The threshold value of polymeric thin films decreased gradually when the dopant increased. The two-photon absorption coefficient of the dye molecules dispersed in the polymer film was estimated by using the theoretical relationship between the ablation threshold of the blended polymeric thin films and the dye concentration. The relative values of two-photon absorption cross-section are in good agreement with those measured in solution. On the other hand, the absolute values are smaller than the latter.

  • Titanium alloy is one of the hard processing materials made by the traditional manufacturing method because of the excellent mechanical strength. Ablation of titanium alloy is investigated by using a femtosecond laser which is a regenerative amplified Ti:sapphire laser with 1kHz repetition rate, 184fs pulse duration time and 785nm wavelength. Experiments are carried out under various ablation conditions with different pulse overlap ratios for the rectangular shape and micro hole. Test results show that the ablation characteristic according to pulse overlap ratio of titanium alloy seems to be as non-linear type at the different zone of energy fluence. The optimal condition of rectangular shape processing is obtained at the laser peak power 1.3mW, pulse overlap ratio of 90%, beam gap of $1\;{\mu}m$. The micro hole has a good quality from the pulse overlap ratio of 99% at the same laser peak power. With the optimal processing condition, the fine rectangular shape and micro hole without burr and thermal damage are achieved.

  • This work performed numerical analysis of electromagnetic field and thermal phenomena occurring in femtosecond laser irradiation of silver nanowires. The local electric field enhancement was computed to calculate the optical energy dissipation as a Joule heating source and the thermal transport was analysed based on the two-temperature model (TTM). Electron temperature increased up to 1000K after 50fs and its spatial distribution became homogeneous after 80fs at the fluence of 100mJ/cm2. The result of this work is expected to contribute to revealing the photothermal effects on silver nanowires induced by femtosecond laser irradiation. Although the highest increase of lattice temperature was substantially below the melting point of silver, the experimental results showed resolidification and fragmentation of the silver nanowire into nanoparticles, which cannot be explained by the photothermal mechanism. Further studies are thus needed to clarify the physical mechanisms.

  • This paper presents a holography through high scatter mediums. Femtosecond light pulses are used as object light and reference light. When light passes through a high scatter medium, there are ballistic light, snake light and difussive light in transmitting light. However, ballistic and snake light are very weak, difussive light is very stronge so that they can not be imaged directly, By using femtosecond laser electronic holographic gating method to gate ballistic light and snake light and multi-holograms processing technology, high quality images can be obtained. • Optical embedded diffraction gratings with the bulk modification in BK-7 glass plates excited by tightly focused high-intensity femtosecond (130fs) Ti: sapphire laser (peak wavelength = 790nm) were demonstrated. The structural modifications with diameters ranging from 400nm to $4{\mu}m$ were photo-induced after plasma formation occurred upon irradiation with peak intensities of more than $1{\times}1013W/cm^2$. The graded refractive index profile was fabricated to be a symmetric around from the center of the point at which low-density plasma occurred. The maximum refractive index change was estimated to be $1.5{\times}10^{-2}$. The two optical embedded gratings in BK-7 glass plate were demonstrated with refractive index modification induced by the scanning of low-density plasma formation.

  • The laser surface modification has been reported for its functional applications for improving tribological performance, wear resistance, hardness, and corrosion property. In most of these applications, continuous wave lasers and pulsed lasers were used for surface melting, cladding, alloying. Since flexibility in processing, refinement of microstructure and controlling the surface properties, technology utilizing lasers has been used in a number of fields. Especially, femtosecond laser has great benefits compared with other lasers because its pulsed width is much shorter than characteristic time of thermal diffusion, which leads to diminish heat affected zone. Moreover, laser surface engineering has been highlighted as an effective tool for micro/nano structuring of materials in the bio application field. In this study, we applied femtosecond and nanosecond pulsed laser to treat biometals, such as Mg, Mg alloy, and NiTi alloy, by heating to improve corrosion properties and functionalize their surface controlling cell response as implantable biomedical devices.

  • Ultrashort pulse laser drilling of polycarbonate track-etched membrane (pTEM) material was used to fabricate a mouse embryo cell trapping device. Holes with a diameter of $2{\mu}m$ to $5{\mu}m$ were fabricated on a $10{\mu}m$ thick membrane using a femtosecond laser with a 150 fs pulse width and 775 nm wavelength and multiple-pulse irradiation. In cell trapping tests, the overall cell occupancy of the machined holes in the fabricated pTEM was found to be more than 80%. The results of a single pulse and multiple pulse irradiation were compared in terms of the surface quality. It was generally found that a single pulse with high energy was less desirable than irradiation with multiple pulses of lower energy.

  • In this paper, ablation rate of $Al_2O_3$ ceramics by femtosecond laser fluence is derived with experimental method. The automatic three axis linear stage makes laser optics to move with high spatial resolution. With 10 times objective lens, minimal pattern width of $Al_2O_3$ is measured in the focal plane. Ablated surface area is shown as linear tendency increasing number of machining times with various laser power conditions. Machining times is most sensitive condition to control $Al_2O_3$ pattern width. Also, the linear increment of pattern width with laser power change is investigated. In high machining speed, the ablation volume rate is more linear with fluence because pulse overlap is minimized in this condition. Thermal effect to surrounding medium can be minimized and clean laser process without melting zone is possible in high machining speed. Ablation volume rate decelerates as increasing machining times and multiple machining times should be considered to achieve proper ablation width and depth.

  • In this paper, a trench structure was fabricated by femtosecond-laser machining to eliminate thermal crosstalk in a multichannel variable optical attenuator (VOA), to prevent decreasing attenuation efficiency of the VOA. Trenches of a variety of widths and depths were fabricated on the VOA chips by femtosecond-laser processing. After the machining, attenuation according to current change was observed in each VOA chip module with trenches. As a result, we could observe high responsivity of attenuation and low power consumption, and that the heat of each channel barely influenced other channels.
