Studies on Food Safety Knowledge of College Students according to Mass-Media Impact (대중매체 영향에 따른 일부 대학생의 식품안전 지식 조사)

  • This study was conducted to assess food safety knowledge of college students according to mass-media reports. To accomplish this, a survey was conducted to investigate the reliability, of primary mass-media sources on Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy(BSE) as well as the preferences of college students. The most common sources of media consumed by male and female students were terrestrial television(TV)(60%), the internet(21%), and newspapers(11%) and terrestrial TV(60%), newspapers (18%), and the internet(17%), respectively. The preferences for media of major and non-major students were terrestrial TV(64%), newspapers(17%), and the internet(14%) and terrestrial TV(51%), the internet(22%), and newspapers(19%), respectively. The reliability of media as viewed by male students were as follows: terrestrial TV(53%) and the internet(40%), whereas for female students, these values were terrestrial TV(55%) and the internet(37%). The reliability of media as viewed by major and non-major students was as follows: terrestrial TV(67%) and the internet(28%), and terrestrial TV(44%) and the internet(44%), respectively. In the case of male students, the primary sources for information regarding BSE were terrestrial TV(54%) and the internet(38%), whereas for female students, the primary sources were terrestrial TV(57%) and internet (37%). In the case of major students, the primary sources for information regarding BSE were terrestrial TV(52%) and the Internet(40%), and for non-major students, the internet(47%) and terrestrial TV(39%). Both male and female students were found to have less knowledge regarding prions, SRM(Specified Risk Materials), MM(methionine-methionine) type genes, and cow above 30 months associated with BSE compared to the other factors associated with this disease. The BSE-related knowledge held by major and non-major students was revealed unknown more than the majority of responses. Based on these results, greater effort should be made to provide meaningful information to improve the food-safety knowledge of college students according to mass-media.

  • Safety performance of a new car is evaluated through USNCAP and their results in the star rating are provided to the consumers. It is very important to obtain high score of USNCAP to appeal their performance to consumers. Therefore the car companies have made the effort to improve their car safety performance. These efforts should satisfy the demand not only to get high score but also to pass the FMVSS, NHTSA regulations on safety. Huge numbers of car crash tests have been conducted on these bases by car companies. However physical tests spend too much cost and time, as an alternative way, the simulation on the car crash could be a solution to reduce the cost and time. Therefore the simulations have been widely conducted in car industry and various researches on this have been reported. In this study, restraint system had been optimized to minimize the injury of female passenger. Belted $5^{th}%ile$ female frontal crash test was selected from various test methods of USNCAP for the study. Initial velocity of the test was 56km/h. The combination injury probability of USNCAP was selected as an objective function and the injury limit value, which was defined in FMVSS, was set to an optimization constraint. Many researches that were similar to this study had been conducted, however most of them had limitation that interaction between airbag and safety belt had not been considered. Contrary to these researches, the interaction was considered in this study.

Activity of Alcohol Dehydrogenase and Ethanol, Acetaldehyde Levels in Normal Adults Blood (정상인의 혈중 알코올 탈수소효소 활성도 및 에탄올, 아세트알데히드 농도에 관한 연구)

  • To identify normal levels of ethanol, acetaldehyde and alcohol dehydrogenase(ADH) activity in blood of Koreans, ethanol and acetaldehyde levels, activity of ADH in blood of Koreans, ethanol and acetaldehyde levels, activity of ADH in blood were measured in 97 subjects(male : 36, female : 61), 45 subjects(male : 21, female : 24) were not exposed to organic solvents and any other chemicals. Fifty two subjects(male : 15, female : 37) were exposed to organic solvents including toluene and xylene. The results were summerized as follows : 1. The blood ADH was not detected in exposed and non-exposed group. 2. The average blood ethanol level of non-exposed group was 0.0490 mg/dl, and exposed group was 0.0363 mg/dl. They were statistically significant(p<0.05). 3. The blood acetaldehyde levels in exposed group were significantly higher than that of non-exposed group was not statistically significant (p>0.05). 4. The average blood ethanol level of males in both groups was significantly higher than that of females, however, they were not statistically significant (p>0.05).

Thyroid Hormone-like Activity of Alachlor as R Endocrine Disruptor in Rats and HeLaTRE Cell Culture (랫드와 HeLaTRE Cell에서의 Alachlor에 의한 갑상선 호르몬성 영향 연구)

  • This study was designed to investigate the suitability of the pubertal assay and the enhanced TG 407 as methods for detection of endocrine-mediated effects, especially thyroid function. Male and female Sprague-Dawley rats were gavaged daily with 0, 12.5, 25, 50 mg/kg alachlor in corn oil during 30 days. The effects of alachlor on thyroid gland, the genital organs and thyroid hormone were measured in male and female rats. Dose of alachlor 25, 50 mg/kg/day increased relative weight of testis and thyroid gland in exposed male rats and decreased relative weight of vagina in exposed female rats. Relative weight of thyroid gland was decreased in alachlor 25 mg/kg/day exposed female rats. Dose of alachlor 25, 50 mg/kg/day decreased plasma T4 and testosterone in female rats. Another purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of endocrine disruptors as like thyroid hormone in vitro. Luciferase activity was measured to dectect reaction of test chemicals and thyroid hormone response elements in HeLaTRE cell. Dose of alachlor 1 nM-1000 nM increased 100-134% luciferase activity compared with control.

Association Between Shift Work and Clean Room Environment on Self-reported Premenstrual Symptoms and Menstrual Pain in Taiwan

  • Background: Limited research has delved into the effects of work characteristics on premenstrual symptoms (PMS) in women, which can influence work performance and overlook potential hazards for women in their work environments. This study aimed to investigate the impact of shift work and working in a clean room on premenstrual symptoms, menstrual status, and menstrual pain among employed females in an electronics manufacturer. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on menstruating female employees between August and December 2014, aged 18e55, who received regular employee health checks. Questionnaires were designed to collect information on demographics, personal lifestyle, menstrual status, menstrual pain scores, and self-reported premenstrual symptoms. Results: Among 7,193 participants, 18.6% reported moderate to severe menstrual pain affecting their work. Female workers who reported shift work showed an increased prevalence of moderate to severe premenstrual symptoms, including fatigue (RR = 1.20), somatic discomforts (RR = 1.04), diarrhea (RR = 1.04), and tension (RR = 1.05). Additionally, shift work was associated with an elevated risk of experiencing a moderate or significant impact of menstrual pain on work (RR = 1.03), menstrual irregularity (RR = 1.30), and high menstrual pain (RR = 1.23). Working in a clean room was associated with an increased risk of high menstrual pain (RR = 1.13). Subjects working shifts in a clean room had the highest pain scores compared to the other groups. Conclusion: This study underscores the association of work-related factors on PMS in female employees. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of premenstrual symptoms in female workers with different work characteristics, emphasizing the potential hazards of work-related factors on female employees.

  • A 61 Year-old female patient was hospitalized for lung cancer. Her Occupational history indicated that she had worked for an asbestos company for 9 years from 1976. The histopathology of the lung revealed malignant bronchioalveolar adenocarcima (stage III) in the lower-left lobe, and a lung sample was found to cantion an unusually high level of asbestos, 218.9$\times$$10^6$ asbestos fibers/g of dry lung tissue. The majority of asbestos fibers found was chrusotile. yet no asbestos body was detected. When compared with Korean male (0.3$\times$$10^6$ fibers/g of dry lung tissue) and female subjects (0.15$\times$$10^6$ fibers/g of dry lung tissue) with no known history of occupational asbestos exposure, the apparent cause of the lung cancer in the current patient was occupational exposure to asbestos.

Cancer Incidence by Occupation in Korea: Longitudinal Analysis of a Nationwide Cohort

  • Background: We performed this study to investigate the inequalities in site-specific cancer incidences among workers across different occupations in Korea. Methods: Subjects included members of the national employment insurance. Incident cancers among 8,744,603 workers were followed from 1995 to 2007. Occupational groups were classified according to the Korean Standard Occupational Classification. Age-standardized incidence rate ratios were calculated. Results: We found that men in service/sales and blue-collar occupations had elevated rates of esophageal, liver, laryngeal, and lung cancer. Among women, service/sales workers had elevated incidences of cervical cancer. Male prostate cancer, female breast, corpus uteri, and ovarian cancers, as well as male and female colorectal, kidney, and thyroid cancer showed lower incidences among workers in lower socioeconomic occupations. Conclusions: Substantial differences in cancer incidences were found depending on occupation reflecting socioeconomic position, in the Korean working population. Cancer prevention policy should focus on addressing these socioeconomic inequalities.

The Accident and Injury Characteristics of Elderly Drivers on Lateral Impact (고령 운전자 측면충돌 사고 및 상해특성)

  • Domestic insurance claims were statistically investigated to analyze the elderly driver's accident patterns and injury types in side impact crashes. Medical treatment records and accident vehicle damage photos have been surveyed for 5,419 cases. The results of our statistical analysis showed that the thorax injury risk of the elderly drive group is 8.8 and 4.0 times higher than that of the young and middle age group respectively. Diagnosis showed that most thorax injuries were caused by rib fracture. The head injury risk of the elderly female driver group seemed to be higher than that of the younger female driver group, however, statistical test has not been conducted because of the lack of number of samples for elderly female accident.

An Effect of Load and Genders on Postural Stability (취급자재의 무게와 성별이 균형 능력에 미치는 영향)

  • The purposes of this paper are to investigate an effect of weight of material and gender on postural stability and to introduce formulas for those. There were five levels of weights 0, 9, 18, 27 and 36 kg, and two levels of genders were conducted. Eight male and five female subjects participated in this experiment, ten tests were performed for each level of weights to measure the postural stability by using the stability platform. The effect of the genders and the load on the postural stability were statistically analysed by the two way ANOVA test and the regression analysis. The ANOVA test showed that the effect of weights was statistically significant on postural stability to the both male and female subjects. And the postural stability of female subjects was better than that of male subjects. A linear regression formula for the balancing time and the load and a formula for the reduction rate postural stability and the relative load were introduced by the regression analysis.

  • The design of automobile occupant seat belt system has been studied by using MADYMO. Based on the FMVSS 208 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 208) and the USNCAP (United States New Car Assessment Program) regulations, seat belt design parameters were chosen for the design improvement to the 5th percentile female dummy: limit force of load limiter, time to fire of shoulder belt, inlet length of shoulder belt, inlet length of lap belt. The design of experiment method was employed to optimize the design parameters of passenger seat belt. Range of injury probability due to the change of H-point position was estimated by the simulation.
