An interview with 13 sixth grade female students attending an elementary school in Seoul was conducted to identify the reasons, learning routes, and purchasing patterns related to their makeup purchase and use. The results of this qualitative analysis showed that the girls were influenced to start wearing makeup by friends or family members, such as sisters and mothers. The students thought that their faces were ugly before they did makeup. They thought they became more beautiful and they were pleased after makeup. Elementary school students mostly reported that they used sunscreen, sun cushion with a whitening function, and lip tint. Some students also used a concealer to cover their flaws. They learned the methods of makeup by watching YouTube videos and from friends. They showed different purchasing patterns depending on the type of cosmetics they buy. They reported that their parents often bought their basic cosmetics such as lotions, and creams, while they tend to use their own money to purchase cosmetics for makeup.

  • We investigate the impact of marital status on the levels of satisfaction of online shoppers in the beauty and cosmetics industry in Vietnam. We find a significant difference in satisfaction between married and divorced/separated online shoppers. More specifically, the latter reveals higher level of satisfaction than the former. Extended analyses further show that this finding is only observed for female online shoppers whilst it is insignificant for their male counterparts. Moreover, we find significant differences in determinants of customer satisfaction between three different groups of online shoppers: single, married, and divorced/separated. While married individuals' satisfaction is affected by all factors (Online shopping experience; Seller Services; External Incentives; Security/Privacy), that of their divorced/separated peers are influenced by only seller services and external incentives. Also, single participants are satisfied with their online shopping driven by their online shopping experience and external incentives. Our findings contribute to the stream of customer satisfaction literature, and to the studies in beauty and cosmetics sector as well as online shopping trends in Vietnam. They contain implications for existing online businesses and new or potential market entrants as to which customer demographic factors have significant influences in terms of customer psychology, behaviour and their satisfaction.

  • Recently, the cross-model strategy of using male models in advertisements for women's cosmetics has been increasingly utilized. Academics have begun to discuss and study cross-model advertisements, but most of the studies have focused on the effects of the presence of a cross model. We investigated the effects of a crossmodel's product demonstration as an advertising creative strategy on consumer's attitudes toward the ad. We examined the effects of a male model demonstrating the advertised products for women's cosmetics on female consumers' attitudes toward the ad. As a result, we found that when a male model demonstrated a product in a women's product advertisement, consumers' attitudes toward the ad were more positive the higher their product involvement. Therefore, product involvement was found to be a moderating variable in the effect of cross-model product demonstration on attitudes toward the ad. This study contributes to the line of research on the effect of cross-model and product demonstration advertising, providing practical implications for advertising practitioners.
