It is well known that the performance of a fuzzy neural network strongly depends on the input features selected for its training. In its applications to sensor signal estimation, there are a large number of input variables related with an output As the number of input variables increases, the training time of fuzzy neural networks required increases exponentially. Thus, it is essential to reduce the number of inputs to a fuzzy neural network and to select the optimum number of mutually independent inputs that are able to clearly define the input-output mapping. In this work, principal component analysis (PCA), genetic algorithms (CA) and probability theory are combined to select new important input features. A proposed feature selection method is applied to the signal estimation of the steam generator water level, the hot-leg flowrate, the pressurizer water level and the pressurizer pressure sensors in pressurized water reactors and compared with other input feature selection methods.
Objective: Increasing food safety demands in the animal product market have created a need for a system to trace the food distribution process, from the manufacturer to the retailer, and genetic traceability is an effective method to trace the origin of animal products. In this study, we successfully achieved the farm tracing of 6,018 multi-breed pigs, using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers strictly selected through least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) feature selection. Methods: We performed farm tracing of domesticated pig (Sus scrofa) from SNP markers and selected the most relevant features for accurate prediction. Considering multi-breed composition of our data, we performed feature selection using LASSO penalization on 4,002 SNPs that are shared between breeds, which also includes 179 SNPs with small between-breed difference. The 100 highest-scored features were extracted from iterative simulations and then evaluated using machine-leaning based classifiers. Results: We selected 1,341 SNPs from over 45,000 SNPs through iterative LASSO feature selection, to minimize between-breed differences. We subsequently selected 100 highest-scored SNPs from iterative scoring, and observed high statistical measures in classification of breeding farms by cross-validation only using these SNPs. Conclusion: The study represents a successful application of LASSO feature selection on multi-breed pig SNP data to trace the farm information, which provides a valuable method and possibility for further researches on genetic traceability.
In this paper, we propose a feature extraction method based on Bhattacharyya distance for multiclass problems. The Bhattacharyya distance provides a valuable information in determining the effectiveness of a feature set and has been used as separability measure for feature selection. Recently, a feature extraction algorithm hat been proposed for two normally distributed classes based on Bhattacharyya distance. In this paper, we propose to expand the previous approach to multiclass cases. Experiment results show that the proposed method compares favorably with the conventional methods.

In clinical decision support system(CDSS), unlike rule-based expert method, appropriate data-driven machine learning method can easily provide the information of individual feature(clinical test) for disease classification. However, currently developed methods focus on the improvement of the classification accuracy for diagnosis. With the analysis of feature importance in classification, one may infer the novel clinical test sets which highly differentiate the specific diseases or disease states. In this background, we introduce a novel CDSS that integrate a classifier and feature selection module together. Random forest algorithm is applied for the classifier and the feature importance measure. The system selects the significant clinical tests discriminating the diseases by examining the classification error during backward elimination of the features. The superior performance of random forest algorithm in clinical classification was assessed against artificial neural network and decision tree algorithm by using breast cancer, diabetes and heart disease data in UCI Machine Learning Repository. The test with the same data sets shows that the proposed system can successfully select the significant clinical test set for each disease.
The bandgap characteristics of semiconductor materials are an important factor when utilizing semiconductor materials for various applications. In this study, based on data provided by AFLOW (Automatic-FLOW for Materials Discovery), the bandgap of a semiconductor material was predicted using only the material's compositional features. The compositional features were generated using the python module of 'Pymatgen' and 'Matminer'. Pearson's correlation coefficients (PCC) between the compositional features were calculated and those with a correlation coefficient value larger than 0.95 were removed in order to avoid overfitting. The bandgap prediction performance was compared using the metrics of R2 score and root-mean-squared error. By predicting the bandgap with randomforest and xgboost as representatives of the ensemble algorithm, it was found that xgboost gave better results after cross-validation and hyper-parameter tuning. To investigate the effect of compositional feature selection on the bandgap prediction of the machine learning model, the prediction performance was studied according to the number of features based on feature importance methods. It was found that there were no significant changes in prediction performance beyond the appropriate feature. Furthermore, artificial neural networks were employed to compare the prediction performance by adjusting the number of features guided by the PCC values, resulting in the best R2 score of 0.811. By comparing and analyzing the bandgap distribution and prediction performance according to the material group containing specific elements (F, N, Yb, Eu, Zn, B, Si, Ge, Fe Al), various information for material design was obtained.

Best subset selection procedure based on mutual information (MI) between a set of explanatory variables and a dependent class variable is suggested. Derivation of multivariate MI is based on normal mixtures. Several types of normal mixtures are proposed. Also a best subset selection algorithm is proposed. Four real data sets are employed to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposals.

Large signal type data sets are difficult to classify, especially if the data sets are non-stationary. In this paper, large signal type and non-stationary data sets are wavelet transformed so that distinct features of the data are extracted in wavelet domain rather than time domain. For the classification of the data, a few wavelet coefficients representing class properties are employed for statistical classification methods : Linear Discriminant Analysis, Quadratic Discriminant Analysis, Neural Network etc. The application of our wavelet-based feature selection method to a mass spectrometry data set for ovarian cancer diagnosis resulted in 100% classification accuracy.

In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised feature selection method. Conventional unsupervised feature selection method defines virtual label and uses a regression analysis that projects the given data to this label. However, since virtual labels are generated from data, they can be formed similarly in the space. Thus, in the conventional method, the features can be selected in only restricted space. To solve this problem, in this paper, features are selected using orthogonal projections and low-rank approximations. To solve this problem, in this paper, a virtual label is projected to orthogonal space and the given data set is also projected to this space. Through this process, effective features can be selected. In addition, projection matrix is restricted low-rank to allow more effective features to be selected in low-dimensional space. To achieve these objectives, a cost function is designed and an efficient optimization method is proposed. Experimental results for six data sets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms existing conventional unsupervised feature selection methods in most cases.

Sentimental analysis begins with the search for words that determine the sentimentality inherent in data. Managers can understand market sentimentality by analyzing a number of relevant sentiment words which consumers usually tend to use. In this study, we propose exploring performance of feature selection methods embedded with Particle Swarm Optimization Multi Objectives Evolutionary Algorithms. The performance of the feature selection methods was benchmarked with machine learning classifiers such as Decision Tree, Naive Bayesian Network, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, Bagging, Random Subspace, and Rotation Forest. Our empirical results of opinion mining revealed that the number of features was significantly reduced and the performance was not hurt. In specific, the Support Vector Machine showed the highest accuracy. Random subspace produced the best AUC results.
A main goal of pharmacogenomics studies is to predict individual's drug responsiveness based on high dimensional genetic variables. Due to a large number of variables, feature selection is required in order to reduce the number of variables. The selected features are used to construct a predictive model using machine learning algorithms. In the present study, we applied several hybrid feature selection methods such as combinations of logistic regression, ReliefF, TurF, random forest, and LASSO to a next generation sequencing data set of 400 epilepsy patients. We then applied the selected features to machine learning methods including random forest, gradient boosting, and support vector machine as well as a stacking ensemble method. Our results showed that the stacking model with a hybrid feature selection of random forest and ReliefF performs better than with other combinations of approaches. Based on a 5-fold cross validation partition, the mean test accuracy value of the best model was 0.727 and the mean test AUC value of the best model was 0.761. It also appeared that the stacking models outperform than single machine learning predictive models when using the same selected features.
